I’ve been working in digital rights and advocacy for years. High rhetoric isn’t how you change things, it’s long-term commitment to meaningful action that must be sustained or it will falter.

My annoyance is that I’ve had this discussion a hundred times and unless you are in the trenches trying to make change while supporting your family I’m not really interested in musings on what a better world looks like, I’m busy trying to support myself doing the work to make it happen.

And per my comment above, I’ve given up a TON of money, but I still deserve to have money in my pocket.

In the age of SaaS I’ll take it. It’s not like I have a few million dollars to pay for training even if I had all the code and data.

Same, and it’s pretty good. Not sure what the complaints are as I only use the text only version.

Never underestimate the willingness of people to have others suffer for their ideals.

Because I’m in the same market now and they are my competitors so I can’t monetize my work at cost if somebody else is taking my labor for free and undercutting me on price.

These aren’t hard concepts.

Yes.

Also, that code tends to be proof of concept, full of bugs, and never audited or used in production.

Academic peer review doesn’t include code review.

Cool, I’ll send you my land lords banking info so you can pay my rent, the info for my kids childcare, and where to contribute to my retirement account.

Also, for what it’s worth, I’ve forgone millions of dollars in compensation over the years to work on socially beneficial projects, and literally just left $250k on the table last year alone. But yeah, wanting to support my family makes me greedy.

There’s no greater certainty than rolling your own and building your own stack.

If you want perfect reliability, use the standard library of a language and nothing else. It’s actually possible.

Ironically, the best open source projects are the ones that have no other dependencies beyond the standard library.

Deserve? They are asking $700 up front and then $24/mo just to keep it working. MKBHD job is not to do PR for tech companies, it’s to tell his viewers if they should spend their hard earned cash in a product.

Humane shipped dog shit and got dog shit reviews. Big deal.

Pay up or roll your own. Nobody owes you free labor.

As somebody who pulled down an open source project I find this trope of FOSS losing its way for greed utterly disingenuous.

People need to put food on the table, period. I’ve had people take my work and make more money from it than I have, with no attribution or credit.

Then I pulled it down and got a lot of people asking why it’s no longer free, when I tell them I can sell them a license they don’t even reply.

I care more about my family than your FOSS ideals. End of story.

I was using it for translation with somewhat wobbly results. Would love to see a translation fine tune.

My nearly new 48GB A6000 is basically an ancient artifact relative to the exploding size of MoE requirements.
bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
100% agree, just saying there’s more art and other amenities than people realize. Also, one of the genuinely friendliest places I’ve ever lived.

The weather is bad enough that I consider it basically uninhabitable if you have seasonal depression. South Bay is a cultural wasteland but god damn the weather is 10/10.

The biggest drawback beyond the weather is the coke/steel plants regularly put shit in the air far in excess of EPA guidelines and the water supply is about two steps above Flint in quality.

Overall, PGH is amazing if you can live with the climate - but if you can’t, you can’t.

bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
I didn’t say there are any. If you want to clear $1M/year enshittifying the last remains of the internet this is Mecca.

There’s truly no other place you can have a pick of such a wide variety of social parasites to work for.

bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
DC is pretty upright in general, whereas I believe Philly is a very loose place.

Philly definitely has more of a creative class than DC, but there’s still things happening in DC.

bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
And where, exactly, do all these bay area artists live?

The other cities all have some sort of semi livable areas for artists, SF has nothing to offer in that regards.

Likewise, people in South Bay lack the sophistication to appreciate anything other than a vanity license plate on a sport car.

bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
If you want to work for a big aimless Megacorp, or one of their pets (Anthropic, OpenAi, etc), sure come to Silicon Valley. Make damn sure you get a nice cut of equity on top of the salary.

Otherwise, the cost of living is ample reason to stay away.

bevekspldnw··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
Exactly, Pittsburgh PA checks all those boxes with a fraction of cost of living and crime. Also, way way way more artists - because they can afford to live there.

The art scene in the bay is actually really bad.

bevekspldnw··on Caching is often enough (2003)
Yes, and everything is super context dependent. The optimizations one would apply to say, a search engine, versus a web mail interface, are quite distinct.
bevekspldnw··on Defeated CEOs are now conceding hybrid working is here to stay
Yup, the biggest class of assets in SV are boring single family homes owned by multimillionaires. Once you take the proximity to offices out of the picture the SV property bubble pops. Make the drones come in a few days a week and the assets value keeps going up due to artificial scarcity.

bevekspldnw··on Google threatens to cut off news after California proposes paying media outlets
I’m not alleging anything, this is internal stuff that came out.

It’s impossible to roll your own for a very long list of reasons that go back to the late 90s.

bevekspldnw··on Google threatens to cut off news after California proposes paying media outlets
Yes and GNI was always an attempt by the wolf to curry favor with the sheep, they act like it’s some sort of grant but it’s always been about controlling narrative.

Journalists aren’t dumb either, talk to anybody who directly got one or was involved in the process.

bevekspldnw··on Google threatens to cut off news after California proposes paying media outlets
Google has thoroughly rigged the space, including manipulating bid stream data to underpay publishers while overcharging the advertiser. It’s called Project Bernake which is public now. I have it on reliable sources there is a lot more beyond that.

The search antitrust suit was garbage, but the coming trials in the ad auction suit is going to hurt a lot more. They total lost their way, it’s actually insane when you’ll see what theyve been doing.

Google never stopped “innovating”, they just shifted their innovation to fraud.

bevekspldnw··on Google threatens to cut off news after California proposes paying media outlets
The link tax is a red herring and a poor understanding on the part of legislators. The real issue is pre-adtech publishers kept 100% of ad revenue and double click now takes a massive cut (which they briefly touch on).

All that cash flowing into MTV is real people’s jobs and livelihood being drained away - it’s also the reason search is entering a utility collapse curve since AI can generate unlimited click bait.

Double click will end up killing google, it’s already too late to go back.

bevekspldnw··on Anyone got a contact at OpenAI. They have a spider problem
my guess is mistral is so good for its size because they are doing some real precise pre ingestion selection and sorting. You need FTS to do that work.
bevekspldnw··on Caching is often enough (2003)
If you’re doing web application development the absolute first stop on performance tuning is caching static content, pre-rendering every view possible, and handling everything else with thoughtful db indexing.

That’s always going to be the biggest performance jumps, but I think a lot of people end up doing a lot of other marginal improvements prior to nailing those basics.

Fucking hell, my A6000 is shy of that and I can’t reasonably justify picking up a second.
