beowulfey··on Millions of Homes Still Being Kept Vacant as Housing Costs Surge, Report Finds
What kind of resources do you mean? They still have to heat and power their homes, so it still “consumes resources”. Unless you are talking about buying local groceries or something.

Propery taxes are the same in NH whether someone lives there full time or not, so it doesn’t matter that they aren’t there and would be equally valuable if they did live full time. The traffic argument is the only one I can see being true, except that traffic in the seacoast is awful already anyway with tourists driving back and forth to Maine.

Personally, I think having permanent residents is far better for a town than a graveyard of empty soulless homes, but I’m just a regular human being and I’m sure its just a matter of opinion at that point.

beowulfey··on New study confirms gulf stream weakening
El Niño has nothing to do with ocean currents in the Atlantic?
beowulfey··on Airbnb tenant refuses to leave for more than a year
Thanks, this is a really good explanation for what happened. None of this was making sense to me haha
beowulfey··on BBC gives up on Threads, sticks with Mastodon
I can relate to this a little. I had a similar experience (maybe not quite as strong, but still) when I first read On the Beach by Nevil Shute
beowulfey··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
Same experience. I probably took a few years off my life with my year by a freeway in LA. So much black crap on everything.
beowulfey··on Antarctic sea ice hits lowest winter maximum on record: US data
Yes, and it’s quite hard to travel back in time to recapture data with improved technologies
beowulfey··on As We May Think (1945)
Good point. Maybe send an email to the author to let them know.
beowulfey··on Antarctic sea ice hits lowest winter maximum on record: US data
That number is estimated using very different methodologies, it’s hard to compare to the modern numbers!
beowulfey··on Essence: A desktop OS built from scratch, for control and simplicity
Haven’t watched the video yet. What is the kernel philosophy? Is it a mono or microkernel?
beowulfey··on macOS Sonoma is available today
It works well now though—do you prefer any of the other package managers still?
beowulfey··on macOS Sonoma is available today
The name is meaningless. It’s just marketing; every version is named for another location across California. Before that they were named for big cats.

Each version has a number that is sequential though. I think it’s just an effect of sheer quantity. They release a new version every year. It’s hard to keep track.

beowulfey··on Saint Helena Island Communications
When did Google do this?
beowulfey··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
My impression of Germany is people are generally very anti-debt. Credit cards were barely used when I visited back in 2019 (although that changed by the time I went back in 2022)
beowulfey··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
At this point the effects of the JFK assassination are so far back in history that new knowledge of possibly real and alternative sequences of events should have little impact on society as it is now. Let’s say it was orchestrated by political enemies—what effect would this have on things today? The state of US government is so dramatically different from back then.

This kind of discussion is really only interesting from a historical perspective. It doesn’t really have any bearing on modern politics or society.

beowulfey··on How did Stripe come up with its name? (2015)
USB wouldn’t have worked with iPhones, so they would have needed separate hardware for android and iPhone. I’m amazed they were able to do anything with the 3.5mm port though, it seems like some clever engineering
beowulfey··on Modern genetic data suggests pre-humans were a group of only 1,280 individuals
What are you describing is one possible explanation for how a bottleneck happened, but your scenario would still result in a genetic bottleneck.
beowulfey··on StarCitizen Server Meshing Architecture
And doesn’t time dilation occur with lots of concurrent events?
beowulfey··on Microplastics detected in the marine air from Norway to the high Arctic
Yes, I believe we should not litter with wanton abandon. If we can avoid it, we should.
beowulfey··on Microplastics detected in the marine air from Norway to the high Arctic
We can’t avoid it. Microplastics are ubiquitous.

Your comment is on a completely different value ranking than my own. I’m over here thinking that this permanent pollution is an effing tragedy, and hoping we can prevent it from worsening further. I’m not even thinking about the possible consequences, which would only make the situation worse.

beowulfey··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
None of this WAS published.
beowulfey··on Praising children for effort rather than ability (2021)
Sorry to say but what you describe is definitely not new to human society… that’s been the way since the beginning of time, and will always be the way.
beowulfey··on Thoughts on the Remarkable 2
Once I’ve read and highlighted a paper I offload it to Zotero. Only thing I keep on permanently are notes.
beowulfey··on Thoughts on the Remarkable 2
Have had a Remarkable 2 for a couple years now. My general impressions have been consistently favorable but the use case is limited. I’m in academia, so it excels specifically because:

* it is basically an infinite shelf of notebooks that I can keep organized however I want

* it is great for reading journal articles at full size

There is a lot I wish it did, but it does work well for these!

beowulfey··on Praising children for effort rather than ability (2021)
At its core, hard work is what provides self-satisfaction, I think. If you work hard and appreciate the effort you put in, it will feel like a success.

Efficiency or effectiveness of a solution is what elicits external satisfaction. Others appreciate you for your efforts when it benefits them greatly.

I think both sides are necessary! Some people naturally favor one vs. the other, too, and respond better to one of these two types of feedback.

beowulfey··on Las Vegas approves 68 miles of underground transportation tunnels
I guess my thinking was that it works pretty well in London to use smaller tunnels, and I don't immediately understand why larger tunnels are needed. If you're familiar with why tunnels have been trending larger, I'd love to know.
beowulfey··on Las Vegas approves 68 miles of underground transportation tunnels
Thats the width of most tunnels in the Tube. I always thought it made sense to have the tunnels be smaller
beowulfey··on Zoom terms now allow training AI on user content with no opt out
We return to the barter economy. Money is obsolete.
beowulfey··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
Life on twitter teeters on the edge separating intense excitement and horrific despair, and “we are back” means we’ve switched from one side to the other again
beowulfey··on Andrew McCalip demonstrates synthesis of LK99
Do we actually know who that is though? I thought it was pseudoanonymous. It’s a new twitter account at least.
beowulfey··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
Neither of them were doing research for the bulk of the time. We can only guess what brought them back to the project, but it may have restarted sometime around 2016.
