beowulfey··on TikTok goes dark in the US
If that were true then you would be able to log in through a browser, and you cannot.
beowulfey··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
I would guess the only ones who do not feel it is their purpose are those for whom it happened accidentally.

Anyone who chose to have kids most likely did so with purposeful intent.

beowulfey··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
It's called "community" and our generation has no idea what that word means or why there is value to it.
beowulfey··on Francis Crick's "Central Dogma" was misunderstood
In the diagram/text description it is specifically referring to replication, in the sense of transmitting genetic information to daughter cells. In that sense there is no protein-protein transfer; no means of copying one protein or rebuilding nucleic acids from the amino acid sequence.
beowulfey··on IMG_0416
was about to post this myself. such a great example of this
beowulfey··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Profit is an easy answer but sometimes easy is correct. Companies are prone to view consumer opinion negatively if they know they don't have a choice. Look at Apple, for example--the removal of the headphone jack, the constant reduction in ports, etc.
beowulfey··on ChatGPT Search
the web was the clicking of links from site to site. the interconnectedness of information. Searching the web was the start of browsing but it was not the only means of traversing.

Honestly the web died long ago imo. Wikipedia and other wikis are the only places that feel like the old web to me now.

beowulfey··on What happens when people with acute psychosis meet the voices in their heads?
Kind of relevant to this, there is literature to support the notion that the 'personality' of internal voices is shaped by society -- people experiencing it in Western nations tend to have voices be very negative and violent, whereas people of other nations tend to have more friendly relationships with their auditory hallucinations. It definitely fits with this therapy, where building a relationship with the voice tends to benefit the mental health of the person [1].

beowulfey··on Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage, chromosome defects, study finds
Even things that are chemically inert can cause problems in our bodies. Silica is similarly chemically inert, but silicosis is a devastating disease.
beowulfey··on The phone ban has had a big impact on school work
Yes, exactly right. And there are many students less likely than that to zone out, and many more likely to zone out.

But if you give them a tool to aid in being distracted, it will encourage all of them to not pay attention. It really is a question of likelihood

beowulfey··on We're excited about our new roundabout
Eminent domain is not taking the land for free. They mentioned budget as a key reason for the space constraints.
beowulfey··on I've built a city, now it needs residents
I love this idea and agree you need a form of curation. Is there a mechanism for "ranking" links? Or reporting? I think a simple UI that lets you up or downvote (after clicking) could be pretty effective at reducing spam.
beowulfey··on Xkcd 1425 (Tasks) turns ten years old today
They have a digital painter bot too!
beowulfey··on Microplastics in the olfactory bulb of the human brain
It's a soft, warm blanket of denial, because the actual implications of it are too scary.
beowulfey··on Closing factories will not be enough to save Volkswagen
My 2019 Toyota has terrible UX. The higher end cars, particularly newer ones, are a little better (comparing Camry vs Corolla e.g.) but overall pretty bad.

Would love to hear people's opinions on car UX though. The Tesla is terrible too, as are most newer car brands. I haven't minded Hyundai cars, and I recently drove a new Nissan that was decent.

beowulfey··on I wish I didn't miss the '90s-00s internet
I think this is genuinely true. The internet today appeals to the lowest common denominator, in the same way that blockbuster movies often do. It is less appealing because it is less specific to our tastes.
beowulfey··on Sleep duration, chronotype, health and lifestyle factors affect cognition [pdf]
My breakfast is a cup of coffee and toast usually but since I live a 25 min bike ride from my work (in New England USA) I can usually leave around 800, which means I can sleep at 2300 for 8 hours easily.

Now, does my body do that?... no, usually it wakes me up after 6-7, but whatever.

beowulfey··on 2023 state of the climate Entering uncharted territory
Talk about good fortune!
beowulfey··on A $10k stipend is available for anyone moving to Cumberland, MD
Yes I would guess this is to try and encourage remote workers to move there, would be a valuable influx
beowulfey··on Why are Texas interchanges so tall?
That's an interesting thought. Are there statistics out there for "percentage of interchanges that are stacks"?

I've lived in CA and the Northeast. I didn't get the impression that either region uses them preferentially. Certainly I see them more in CA, but I feel like that is probably because the number of interchanges is higher, ha!

beowulfey··on Can we stop the decline of monarch butterflies and other pollinators?
It's usually neighbors complaining vs. the government. My buddy had parents who lived in New Hampshire, a notoriously small-government state. They kept their front yard unmowed for insects and wildlife. Got so many complaints from neighbors they had to register their front yard as an "urban nature preserve" of sorts to get them off their backs.
beowulfey··on Study: Consumers Actively Turned Off by AI
In my experience, the people in my friend group are wary of AI because of the potential it has to eliminate jobs. I think the generally negative connotation comes from this "replacement of human effort" interpretation. If it can be done cheaper and easier with AI, that will naturally supplant effort a human could have made.

Since non-techies are often the people being displaced in this scenario, it doesn't sit well with them when AI shows up in a product they like.

(For what it's worth, I mostly agree with this sentiment.)

beowulfey··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
100% getting deja vu back to 2016 with this comment
beowulfey··on Deletion of Il11 extended the lives of mice by 25%
Article states they had fewer biomarkers of aging, and showed less age-associated obesity, fraility, and metabolic decline. So their "youth" period extended longer.

Actually the point of healthspan vs lifespan is made in the introduction -- it was a justification for using mice for this study, which have clear health phenotypes that are analogous to humans.

beowulfey··on The fascinating and complicated sex lives of white-throated sparrows
Gender is being used here as "trait arising from genetic sex + behavior". It's not the same as the human social construct, but it is analogous. It's also not commonly used in biology in this way from what I've seen, for what that's worth.
beowulfey··on Fern Hollow Bridge should have been closed years before it collapsed
I would argue that he did not miss the point at all actually--he deliberately mentions it at the end.
beowulfey··on Parable of the Sofa
The point of the article is that the big business model is "continued growth", which depends on constantly increasing sales, which means products necessarily get shittier so that they must be replaced more frequently. Small "lifestyle" businesses do not operate under this principle and encourage reuse and renewal. They represent opposing philosophies.

Whether you can "just" get a sofa from big business or not, that is precisely what they hope for, and ideally you should be purchasing a sofa more frequently than you already do to further support this notion.

beowulfey··on The Stanford Startup and the MIT Startup (2013)
I don't think these archetypes apply to the mid-90s Stanford/MIT scenes
beowulfey··on I'm closing up shop on my Mastodon for the foreseeable future
I think that is actually the exact bit of self discovery they are describing in the article!
beowulfey··on I'm closing up shop on my Mastodon for the foreseeable future
I think there is an even simpler solution, and it's the one the author mentions...

stop using that medium to post things.
