> So you could, even knowing only "phobia" and being able to guess "hippo", have a good basis for your choice.

Except "hippo-" is from Greek and means "horse".

beojan··on Oxford loses top 3 university ranking in the UK
How do they know they're your first pick? Unless things have changed, you don't provide a ranking until the universities have made their offers.
beojan··on C++: terser (shorter) lambda == SHORTY (ab-use?)
It's like Boost Lambda2 or Boost HOF. Boost Hana also has a similar feature.

This seems to be more fully featured than all of those though. Maybe some could be ported over to Lambda2.

beojan··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
The Eurostat style guide puts the Euro sign in front of the numbers for English text: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php...

I think the general rule is that in English the currency symbol for the primary currency goes in front of the number, while the symbol for a subunit (pence, cents, etc) goes after the number.

beojan··on Users say T-Mobile must pay for killing "lifetime" price lock
There was no monthly fee.
beojan··on Ask HN: What happens to ".io" TLD after UK gives back the Chagos Islands?
At least for the identification sticker / stripe on cars we've moved from GB to UK. Maybe we'll just move to uk as the ISO 2 letter code.
beojan··on Casio FW-91 replaced with smart internals
They do, albeit without a heart rate monitor.

https://www.casio.com/us/watches/casio/product.ABL-100WE-1A/

With a heart rate monitor it's considerably more expensive.

beojan··on Do Not Sign the Qt License Agreement Unchanged
Nokia decided to use the LGPL and the KDE Free Qt agreement was then updated to specify LGPL.
beojan··on Producing fuels from 1,500 degrees of solar heat
You don't have to use all the fuel produced.

Presumably some could be used to make plastics and everything else we make from oil. You could also bury some.

beojan··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
> For instance we don't install backup engines on the off chance that all 2 engines fail.

We used to. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETOPS

beojan··on Software glitch saw Aussie casino give away millions in cash
This isn't a case of slot machines where they got the logic for the house edge wrong. This is a case of double redeeming winnings because the machine would give you your winnings but not mark the ticket as redeemed.
beojan··on The lifetime tooth decay vaccine is now available (in Honduras)
That technique is something you get pretty much automatically if you use an electric toothbrush.
beojan··on Can Europe's trains compete with low-cost airlines?
You need a lot more infrastructure for trains, and more people to maintain everything.
beojan··on Early immunotherapy for Crohn’s disease significantly reduces complications
There's also a prescription charge, so it's not completely free.
beojan··on The Fed is behind the Capital One/Discover merger
Visa and Mastercard (and American Express) are international networks. How could any individual central bank provide that?
beojan··on Firefox on the brink?
There was until Google and Mozilla decided W3C wasn't moving fast enough and introduced WHATWG.
beojan··on Fed to Propose Lowering Debit-Card Swipe Fees
Target is a bad example, because they don't charge you the same no matter how you pay. If you use a Target red card you get a 5% discount.
beojan··on They studied dishonesty – Was their work a lie?
Mathematics isn't a humanity but it isn't a science either. It's purer than a science, demanding logical proof, not just evidence.
beojan··on CT scans of coffee-making equipment
P = (v^2)/R. It's R that stays constant, not P.
beojan··on CT scans of coffee-making equipment
A heating element is basically just a resistor, right? Which means if you run one on half the design voltage it'll draw half the current it's meant to and produce ¼ the power.
beojan··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
In English, if the names are separated by a comma it generally indicates that they're in surname, given names order.

I think this is to make sorting easier, since names are sorted in alphabetical order by surname then given names.

beojan··on Ask HN: How to contract for US companies as EU national
They don't pay corporation tax on your salary. They do pay employer's NI, though.
beojan··on YouTube will stop showing videos on the homepage if your watch history is off
Why not just show your subscription feed instead?
beojan··on Hugging Face, GitHub and more unite to defend open source in EU AI legislation
The Open Source Definition is effectively identical to the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

Given that the FSF plays games to pretend the GFDL is a Free license when it really shouldn't be, in practice Open Source is preferable to Free Software.

beojan··on FedNow Is Live
T + 1 millisecond seems impossible. Light can only travel a couple of hundred miles in a millisecond.
beojan··on Impact of RHEL Changes to AlmaLinux
CentOS Stream seems to be more like stable + proposed-updates than just stable.

The one you stir tea with is also probably smaller than a teaspoon (probably about half a teaspoon).
beojan··on Show HN: I created Units Converter that contains 5000 units across 78 categories
A teaspoon is 5 ml. I think you're thinking of tablespoons.
beojan··on Do high interest rates fix high inflation?
It would only reduce demand for exported goods if those goods are priced in local currency and the exporter doesn't (or can't) reduce their prices.
