bennyp101··on LEGO Building Instructions
I'm sure there was a brick scanning app that appeared a while ago, or try and find a number and enter it on Lego site [1], otherwise post a picture on BrickLink and I'm sure someone will know what it is! Then you can look on BrickLink or Rebrickable to find sets that it came from

bennyp101··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
Have you tried https://www.dendron.so/ ? I think that was aiming to be a knowledgebase in vscode
bennyp101··on Red Hat Is Not Linux (2000)
Must have been mid 90's, and I was in France with my parents who were doing up a run down house there, and we ended up in some shop and I stumbled upon a "Linux Pour Les Nuls" book which came with a RedHat disc - that was my first ever foray into Linux! I spent my summer holidays messing about on a laptop with it, and that pretty much cemented my joy it. So, whatever happens (and I have no idea as I'm not really paying much attention to it) but it was always my first!
bennyp101··on Companies must stop using Google Analytics
That's essentially what I did, don't need to know the browser or device or where they are from (the product is UK only, so it's largely irrelevant) - so as I control the server side, just log page visits and certain CTA's, and can see a rough journey of where people have been and if they placed an order or not.

That's far more useful than hoping that people have JS enabled or tracking stuff blocked.

(I.e. Can see that they visited an order page, then back to FAQ's, then clicked on a "whats is x" link - so should probably update the content on the order page to explain what X is)

Obviously it depends on what data you actually need, but that gets me most of the way there without gathering a load of data that isn't needed

bennyp101··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
I don't see how they can argue that they own the data, and then turn around and say they have no way of making sure there is no PII - if a user thinks that a comment or post contains their PII and delete it, then either the user owns it or reddit needs to respect that is was deleted for that reason
bennyp101··on Linux tool to show progress for cp, mv, dd
At least 10 times this year so far to copy an image to sd cards. Its reliable and easy
bennyp101··on How much is a smidgen?
Same, I mean who only uses 1 clove of garlic?! At that point of the recipe it's clearly written by a mad person ;)
bennyp101··on Open source Background Remover: Remove Background from images and video using AI
Sure, it was a quick test, but it works for me, YMMV

bennyp101··on Open source Background Remover: Remove Background from images and video using AI
Chucked this into a Dockerfile, and had a play with it. (Takes a while for torch to download, had to set the pip default-timeout higher)

Seems to work pretty well, there were some images I had where it left a bit of a blur around hair, but overall it worked pretty well on most of the ones I tried!

Chucked in imagemagik as well to do some trimming/colour manipulation - works pretty nicely

bennyp101··on Ask HN: How many websites, apps or notifications do you look at to “catch-up”?
I have 4 main sites in Livemarks on my browser:

- BBC News

- Ars Tech

- HN

- (local newspaper for my area)

I don't really checkin - more just click on the dropdown to see if there is anything interesting randomly throughout the day.

My wife looks at a lot of news sites, so I figure she will fill me in on anything else - I have breaking news alerts on for BBC on my phone, but I've found recently it's more just standard news than "breaking"

The only notifications I have on for my phone are BBC breaking news and whatsapp. (And Teams during work hours). Everything else can wait until I want to look.

bennyp101··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
Same for me in the UK - 3 months seems to be standard for people that have institutional knowledge. I know other positions have shorter times.

Edit: although I’m not sure how it would play out if I decided to just do nothing for those 3 months if I were to leave

bennyp101··on Supabase Auth: SSO, Mobile, and Server-Side Support
The `SAML 2.0, for developers can add SSO to their own apps` - I was looking at using BoxyHQ for it, but didn't really want another moving part, so this nicely fills in that space!
bennyp101··on Supabase Auth: SSO, Mobile, and Server-Side Support
I've been waiting for this! Super excited to try it out!
bennyp101··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
Probably not, but from a anecdotal observation I've heard a lot of people say they were getting one installed, and there has been a shortage of logs this year (Of course that may be due to other factors)

Might have helped contribute to using less gas for heating, but maybe not in a large way

bennyp101··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
I know a lot of people near us (in the UK) went out and bought log burners for their houses - chatting to some neighbours last year and they were saying there was a 6 month waiting list to have one installed.

For the first time in 8? years we struggled to get hold of logs - especially oaks. Nobody seemed to be able to get hold of anything.

I think people switched their method of heating

bennyp101··on Website hosted on a 24 year old Linux server
Ah man, I always wanted a Cobalt RaQ server - they looked so cool! I seem to remember people reselling access to them and they had web guis that looked like them as well, I think a friend had one
bennyp101··on Website hosted on a 24 year old Linux server
Pretty sure the first guestbook/counter I wrote were in perl and wrote to a text file :D
bennyp101··on GitHub issue - resolved
Clicking "Subscribe To Updates" top right on https://www.githubstatus.com/ gives me a whole load of options for getting updates, one of those is RSS
bennyp101··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
I switched to a card holder a few years ago, has my licence and various cards in it. I also keep my daily spending and joint account cards in my phone case - and my phone has some of the cards from my card holder in it.

Most of the time I just take my phone, but if I’m going in the car or out shopping I take the card holder.

The only time I throw some change in my pocket is if I’m taking the kids somewhere

bennyp101··on Don't let event-driven architecture buzzwords fool you
I tried the EventStorming a few years ago with a dept for working out a new system , it was really eye opening how everyone referred to things - seeing it all laid out made them realise they all did things slightly differently, and referred to things differently. It was fun and very useful to not just me, but them as well
bennyp101··on Building an in-house on-call training program for your SRE team
First step should be to ensure you have enough people that you can do an on-call schedule without burning out your handful of employees, second should be that you tailor your notifications so they don't get overwhelmed by "outages" that can actually be dealt with by other teams or left until the workday, thirdly make sure you pay people for doing so - so many places just assume that you will be about.

bennyp101··on Beta Testers required for my book-recommendation website
Looking at the code, it looks like they are not logging into MongoDB/Realm async, they are just checking if it is done, then reloading the page if not.

    const user = app.logIn(credentials);

    export const client = num_users===0 ?
// wait for 1 second before reloading the page
    setTimeout(() => {
      window.location.reload();
    }, 350) : app.currentUser.mongoClient("mongodb-atlas")
(which coincides with loads of realm users in localstorage if it continues to reload)

This https://www.mongodb.com/docs/realm/web/authenticate/ shows how to login whilst waiting for a user to be created.

Edit: @aditiyadav Hope that doesn't come across wrong, just pointing out where the problem could be :)

bennyp101··on Ask HN: What API's do people wanna buy/pay for?
I was going to suggest Signable [1] which I have used in the past, but it looks like their API is only available on a monthly plan (I'm sure it was available on PAYG before) - but it is cheaper than the 2 you mentioned.

bennyp101··on SirTunnel, a personal ngrok alternative
Personally I’ve been using sish[1] recently, lots of ngrok alternatives out there now, especially as the pricing went a bit weird

bennyp101··on Ask HN: Self-hosting in 2023: Nextcloud on Linode, or...?
Depends on your budget I guess.

A dedicated server on something like Hetzner is ~£50 a month, put portainer or proxmox (or portainer inside proxmox) and run whatever you want.

Use traefik to direct things.

Use backblaze, or hetzner boxes etc as storage backups etc

bennyp101··on Summer Afternoon – A WebGL Experiment
Love how smooth this is, even on a phone! Really well done, not just from a technical point of view, but aesthetically as well.

As I ran through the trees, with the sunlight changing, it brought back some little flashbacks of me doing exactly that when I was that height! Very cool!

bennyp101··on Dotfiles Management

bennyp101··on No, you can’t manufacture that like Apple does (2014)
Gotcha, thanks!
