benkarst··on Show HN: Yelp for AI Models/Products
We’ve measured models with countless benchmarks and arena results but there are surprisingly little resources to hear unbiased reviews from people who use AI models and subscriptions. I built The Vibes to fill the needed gap for people like me who are always switching between plans and want the best at any given time!
benkarst··on Komodo: A free anonymous LLM client that loads faster than Google
Built with speed in mind. Each query takes about 1 second. Initial load time is averaging 1 second and to load it from cache takes 0.2s. Both of these are averaging faster than Google. But with a lot less functionality!

Duck duck Go exists as a privacy first search engine, so why not Komodo as a privacy first LLM client?

benkarst··on Jon Stewart on AI: It's replacing us in the workforce now
It's not unemployment, it's self-actualized "me" time!
benkarst··on OpenAI's DALL-E will train on Shutterstock's library for six more years
I mean they never gave consent for their photos to be used as training data.
benkarst··on OpenAI's DALL-E will train on Shutterstock's library for six more years
Our legal system's idea of intellectual property wasn't designed for and had no way of knowing what it means to use a copyrighted work as 'training data'. Sadly it still has no protections and even there were, it's no clear how it would be enforced.
benkarst··on OpenAI's DALL-E will train on Shutterstock's library for six more years
How is it even remotely legal for Shutterstock to cash in on something that photographers never gave consent for? OpenAI is mindblowingly unethical.

Shutterstock was started in 2003.

benkarst··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
So they built an entire company betting that little old Apple wouldn't mind hacking a proprietary protocol? Hmm.
benkarst··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
Altmanheimer
benkarst··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Greed is undefeated.
benkarst··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Side note, the 10B investment is less than a half a percent of MSFT's 2.75T market cap.
benkarst··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
This plays perfectly into the narrative that Sam wanted to take this godlike tech that Ilya created and commercialize it.

Sam chose greed over safety.

benkarst··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
OpenAI never found a true identity under Sam. Sam treated pursued hyper growth (treating it like a YC startup) and many in the company, including Ilya, wanted it to be a research company emphasizing AI safety.

Whether you're Team Sutzkaver or team Altman, you can't deny it's been interesting to see extremely talented people fundamentally disagree what to do with godlike technology.

benkarst··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
Correct. That's why they were able to fire Sam.
benkarst··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
Oh, ok. Thanks for the education sir. I'm sure it's referring the color and not the second biggest cloud computing platform grossing over 50 billion per year.
benkarst··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
It's incredible how many of you alleged tech people think that Sam just wanted a world of safe AI while his actions suggest he wanted to make dump trucks of money.

He was the one who partnered with Microsoft and turned it from a non-profit to a for-profit company.

benkarst··on GitHub Copilot emits GPL code
Time to sue MSFT
benkarst··on From Prison to Programming
Or if you make TC, from 'from programming to prison'.
benkarst··on Ask HN: Have you had success with improving your reading speed?
Sounds like a depth-first vs. breadth-first problem to me.
benkarst··on Ask HN: Have you had success with improving your reading speed?
What program are you using to get 4.5x?
benkarst··on Zoom lied to users about end-to-end encryption for years, FTC says
Oh you know that private video chat that that literally everyone uses, it's not private.

How is this getting almost no attention from the ms media?

benkarst··on Hacker News is being hacked by marketing trolls
True, I guess as any news forum grows, you're going to have marketing trolls. I'm just kinda disappointed that it never gets down-voted or called out in the comments.

Maybe if more users had the right to down-vote, there wouldn't be this problem.

benkarst··on Patagonia joins growing list of companies boycotting Facebook ads
Given there are a very large amount of nearly identical t-shirts and caps you can buy, a clothing company's sole strategy is marketing. If you think this "boycotting" isn't also marketing, you're a sucker. Stop with all the comments about their "principles". They sell goddamn t-shirts. Manufactured in China btw.
benkarst··on Zoom's (Over)Valuation?
Who wants to build a competitor and get bought out with all that cash they have? Lol.
benkarst··on Notion for everyone
So this is basically an ad? Ugh.
benkarst··on Emotionally Expressive Text to Speech
If you read my comment, I said "building the product".
benkarst··on Emotionally Expressive Text to Speech
The burden of getting a startup off the ground is centered around engineering, design, and actually getting your hands dirty and building the product.

As an engineer, I've been approached by those experienced in sales and offer me to build a mutually agreed upon product that we agreed would make money for equity. I would like to know if this model works. If so, how does it work? Is this common?

You can take offense if you like, but if you meet a guy at an entrepreneur conference who already built a prototype, you're not a co-founder.

benkarst··on Emotionally Expressive Text to Speech
What was your role in co-founding the company? No offense but it seems like John is the one who engineered the technology.
benkarst··on Ampyx Power: Wind energy systems using tethered wings above 200 meters
It must be hard to get an MVP. It's been 10 years and they only have renderings?
