benjiweber··on A hundred UK companies sign up for four-day week with no loss of pay
Do people ask you to make an exception and attend meetings when you have a Friday booked off from your holiday allowance? What would be different if you have it booked off for working pattern?

benjiweber··on Ask HN: Does anyone else think SQL needs help?
create view max_products_sold as select sale_person_id, max(no_products_sold) AS no_products_sold from sales_department_details group by sale_person_id;

select sale_person_id, sale_person_name, no_products_sold, commission_percentage, sales_department from sales_department_details natural join max_products_sold;

benjiweber··on Semantic Diff for SQL
What do you mean by a mapping with a source table columns? The data columns in the view could come from 0 to n source tables. Entirely synthetic, transformed, combined data from multiple tables etc.
benjiweber··on How did REST come to mean the opposite of REST?
Semantic Diffusion comes for everything. See also everyone calling the thing they use to avoid integration "CI".
benjiweber··on The End of CI
I think the point is about far shorter feedback loops than possible with today's pervasive tech.

> something even more continuous than continuous integration. It might look like real-time integration of your changes, collaborative editing, or smarter build systems that produce near-live feedback

e.g. https://medium.com/darklang/how-dark-deploys-code-in-50ms-77...

benjiweber··on D1: Our SQL database
I was expecting this to be using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D_(data_language_specification... given the name.
benjiweber··on I've used all the notebooks
I used these Leuchtturm1917 A5, dot-grid with fountain pens for years. Still love paper and pen, but have switched almost completely to the Remarkable2 for well over a year now. It's close enough that the infinite-capacity notebook and syncing to cloud are worth the slightly worse than paper experience.
benjiweber··on It's not your fault

benjiweber··on TikTok is scary good. It's digital crack
Been trying to signup to tiktok for years now every time I get

Uncaught (in promise) TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'name')

When signing up with email. Tried with multiple browsers, multiple email addresses, multiple devices. How are other people signing up?

benjiweber··on My best estimate is gas stoves decrease life expectancy by 53 days on average
Are you sure that's induction? I think time from hob off to to boiling water on induction is much faster (roughly half) gas. Starts heating pan immediately?

Halogen and resistance hobs are less responsive though.

benjiweber··on We have jetpacks and we do not care

benjiweber··on Ask HN: Where Is the COLA?

benjiweber··on SQL language proposal: JOIN FOREIGN
"group by 1,2,3,4,5,6" is at least a little more consise.
benjiweber··on SQL language proposal: JOIN FOREIGN
NATURAL JOIN is great because it's like a relational AND. How else will you join with Table Dee and Table Dum? https://twitter.com/benjiweber/status/1476629550608101384

It's just risky if you don't design your schema with relational algebra in mind.

benjiweber··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew

benjiweber··on Goodbye, Clean Code (2020)
You realise that everyone pushing changes to main several times a day is the definition of CI? and it's pretty much impossible to do with code review as a gate for pushing to main. Interesting how CI has become semantically diffused to mean literally the opposite of CI: tooling and processes that delay integration and make it easier to work in isolation.

https://wiki.c2.com/?ContinuousIntegration " The most granular unit of integration should be one step of one refactor. "

I'm sure this article will attract the attention those of us who were taught by Hugh Darwen.

benjiweber··on Dating in Delhi when you're poor
Upper class means different things in different cultures. In UK more of an association with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landed_gentry than a level of income.
benjiweber··on Goose flying upside down is simply showing off, say experts
Apparently people drowning don't actually flail their arms (never seen anyone drowning though).
benjiweber··on Against SQL
> By far the most common case for joins is following foreign keys. SQL has no special syntax for this

You can use NATURAL JOIN

select * from foo natural join bar

Works as long as the keys are named the same. However, a lot of people have a habit of naming keys differently in the two tables.

benjiweber··on I don't care about cookies
As I understand it PECR does require affirmative consent to use cookies specifically. Often same mechanism is used for data processing bases for GDPR as for PECR consent.

benjiweber··on Rethinking the IDE for the 2020s
Liveshare is pretty useful for pair programming. Not about invading privacy but making it easy to work together. Given how easy it is to collaborate on docs with google docs it's kind of sad that remote collaborative coding tools are still in their infancy.

I think if we changed the way we talk about meetings, schedules, work etc we could improve a lot of things.
