benjaminl··on Show HN: Trail Router – generate running routes that prefer greenery and nature
I was think the same thing. The routes generated are really great, but how would I actually use the routes. As some of the routes are pretty complicated. I use an Apple Watch and it would be great to use that.

My preference would be to use Apple Map directions. But it isn’t possible to specify waypoints.

But the official Google Maps URL spec supports specifying waypoints. It would be awesome to click on a link to open the route in Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions.

benjaminl··on How does the Gmail unsubscribe button work?
Yeah I find it really annoying also. But surprisingly, they don’t do that just to add friction to unsubscribe. There is a real problem that it solves.

Legitimate mailing lists have problems with people forwarding emails, when the recipients of the forwarded emails click the unsubscribe button, they will unsubscribe the original recipient who didn’t want to be unsubscribed.

benjaminl··on Hourly 4-second sprints prevent impairment of postprandial fat metabolism
That is also how I initially read it, but the paper states that there were 5 sprints per hours for a total of 160 seconds a day.

From the paper:

> i.e.; 4-s x 5 per h x 8-h = 160-s per day

benjaminl··on Darktable 3.0
Depending on your neeeds, both Adobe Lightroom and Google Photos will do this.

Adobe finally made Adobe Lightroom sync your library with the cloud. So you can now have all your photos from on all your devices.

benjaminl··on Can China recover from its disastrous one-child policy?
Read the article. It includes a graph that show that fertility was already drastically dropping before one-child was introduced.
benjaminl··on Amazon driver arrested after taking GPS 'bait' package off Washington Co. porch
Because in much of the country it is incredibly rare to have a package stolen off of a porch. For example I have never had a package stolen nor do I know of a person who has had a package stolen off of their porch.

The person sending the package can choose if the package is left at the door or if it requires a signature. Amazon and others like them have decided that the increased convenience is worth the occasional cost of reshooting a package.

benjaminl··on How we solved our office Wi-Fi problems
I have had good experience with MikroTik products. The are at a similar price point, but with a less refined interface but a lot more flexibility.
benjaminl··on Speech-to-Text Benchmark: Framework for benchmarking speech-to-text engines
It isn’t like they are trying to hid this. They made it abundantly clear in the writeup that they made Cheetah.
benjaminl··on BPG Image format
What has happened since those previous discussions is that HEIF is begining to get traction. Apple has adopted HEIF for it's latest OSes (iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra)[0] and Android P is adding support for it.

HEIF is a standards based based MPEG image format that like BPG is based on HEVC. Due to HEIF being an MPEG standard and the traction it is getting in the marketplace it looks like we might finally have a true next gen format to replace JPEG.

None of this takes away anything from BPG. I just thought is was curious that given HEIF is the obvious elephant in the room, the linked page didn't mention HEIF and indeed until now, no other comment has mentioned it.

benjaminl··on Playing to Lose (2014)
> But what if we relax the second requirement to only apply to intentional resignations, forfeitures, and fouls? What if we had a game where both sides were trying their absolute hardest to make the other side win?

The article address that. You still have to follow the rules of the game.

benjaminl··on Seriously, Juice Is Not Healthy
It is way more complicated than that. The body autonomously regulates the amount of calories that you eat. For example when you exercise more studies show people will eat almost exactly an extra amount of food equalent to the calories exercised.

The average person gains an extra 1 to 2 pounds a year. It takes 6,000 calories to gains 2 pounds. This is about ~16.5 calories a day. About a fifth of a slice of bread.

This is an imbalance of energy, on a 2000 calorie diet, of less than 1%.

benjaminl··on European parliament committee approves vote on ‘disastrous’ copyright bill
Google actually does ask, it is called robots.txt [0]. Robots.txt is the technical equivalent of asking nicely. If the publishers don't want Google using snippets of their articles or otherwise indexing their articles all publishers need to do is tell Google not to using robots.txt, no law needed [1].

This law won't hurt Google, they have the necessary lawyers and resources to deal with the ramifications. What this will hurt are the smaller search engines that don't have the same resources as Google. This law, if enacted, will end up giving more power to Google not less. For example, with the German law, Google was given a free license [2], but was DuckDuckGo given a license? As far as I can tell no. So all that changed is that Google has a license and its competitors don't. I can't see how this is a good thing for anybody but Google. It hurts consumers, reduces market choice and will end up hurting publishers.

benjaminl··on Earliest images of the moon were better than people realised
Great find. It is unfortunate that the moonrise image most used as the example image from this project is missing from that archive. It is FRAME_1101_H2, and is not there. This is ironic as this image is the example image the grandparent used for their example for the images being moved.
benjaminl··on Underwater Tunnels Revolutionize the Faroes
Forgive me I am not from this area, New York and New Jersey's elected governments are both predominantly from the Democratic Party. What do the Republicans have to do with the tunnel?
benjaminl··on Facebook moving away from React Native?
I would seriously consider Xamarin. The tooling with ReSharper is great. LiveXAML gives you the same instant reload that React Native has.

Xamarin Forms gives you a cross platform UI, but you can use fully native Fragments/ViewControllers where needed.

benjaminl··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
What makes a Picasso painting a Picasso is that it was made by him. What makes a diamond a diamond is its molecular structure.

Following this logic sea salt isn't "real" salt like regular table salt (which is mined), since it wasn't mined from the earth, but created from sea water.

benjaminl··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
What do you mean by "aren't real". In what way is a manufactured diamonds not real?

My understanding is that they are in every respect indistinguishable except for perhaps being too perfect under magnification.

benjaminl··on GDPR: Removing Monal from the EU
SMTP is federated. Did GDPR outlaw email?

I am assuming the answer is no, but would a startup be able to build a SMTP or NNPT like system today? It would be a shame for the GDPR to be yet another force moving the Internet from its historical decentralization reinforcing the current centralization trend.

benjaminl··on MacOS command line version of the WireGuard VPN is now available for testing
ZeoTier, which also uses UDP, has an iOS app. So it is possible if the dev team wants to prioritize it.
benjaminl··on Building a Text Editor for a Digital-First Newsroom
Looks like they cut the size down some. I am seeing 10.7 MB for the GIF.

There are several reasons for why the GIF is so large that all contribute to the size. The GIF's resolution is quite large for a GIF, at 1004px by 788px, this is larger then they display it on the page. And the GIF is pretty long at 336 frames.

Since GIFs on like just about every video format except MJPEG has no interframe compression. So each frame only has to average 32 KB to make up that 10 MB (336 * 32.6KB = 10.7 MB).

This is an example of how extremely good our modern video codecs are.

benjaminl··on FCC approves SpaceX plan for satellite broadband network
The plan submitted to the FCC includes descriptions of the plans for deorbiting the satellites when they have completed their useful life.

SpaceX proposes to deorbiting the satellites much faster then international regulations require.

benjaminl··on Another reason why Docker containers may be slow
They claim to be half the price of AWS [0]. Digital Ocean isn't relevant here as they don't offer container hosting.

benjaminl··on Another reason why Docker containers may be slow
That would by Joyent [0] the makers of SmartOS (Basically, Open Source Solaris). Their Triton cloud product uses SmartOS under the hood.

benjaminl··on Tesla Q1 2018 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
You could be comparing apples and grapefruits here.

It has been reported that Tesla makes a lot of thier own parts. So more of the total supply chain for manufacturing the car exists in that plant.

For example Tesla manufacturers thier own motor in the plant were the NUMMI plant would have had thier ICE motors pre-assembled.

benjaminl··on AT&T stealing/misrouting 1.1.1.0/29 for some of their residential customers
In this case for AT&T FTTH there are two seperate devices a ONT and AT&T's router. The ONT is a media converter that converts the GPON (fiber) to Ethernet. AT&T's router is superfluous in the scenario where the customer wants to user their own router. The only reason AT&T's router is necessary is to perform the 802.1x authentication.

Living in Central Florida, the lightning capital of the United States, I take electrical isolation very seriously. This is what is so great about fiber. Instead of having a another separate conductor running into your house (twisted pair or coax) there is just a glass insulator (fiber). So no extra isolation needed.

benjaminl··on AT&T stealing/misrouting 1.1.1.0/29 for some of their residential customers
Do you have a write-up of this anywhere? When I installed AT&T fiber I looked into this briefly, but I didn't find any success stories other than manual VLAN reassignment.
benjaminl··on Ask HN: If you were to ditch Gmail, what would be your alternative to email?
Fastmail is a great standards based Gmail alternative. They use Cryus Imap under the hood and give back to the community. It is both powerful and easy to use. They were the only ones to be able to accommodate my formally self hosted overly complicated email setup. For the truly esoteric needs, they support custom Sieve code. [1]

For business purposes Office 365 is great. It has the full power of Exchange under the hood. (I was recently able to setup forwarding only email addresses to external email addresses, without needing new licenses or setting up mailboxes.)

benjaminl··on The Collector’s Fallacy
Then you will love blinkist.com, they summarize nonfiction book so that you can read or listen to them in 15 minutes.

But you might find that as other commentators point out, without the original packaging, although the summarized book contains all of the insights of the original, it is hard to retain the information.

benjaminl··on Virtual private networks with WireGuard
If you want to connect all your hosts together in a mesh I suggest ZeroTier. It is an easy to setup network designed for this use case.
benjaminl··on Waymo released a 360-degree VR representation of what its robocar sees
The reason why the steering wheel is there is due to these cars being modified Chrysler Pacifica minivans. It is easier all around just to leave the wheel as it.

There is no need for a passenger to take manual control. If the car or the self driving system has a problem. The car will pull over and another Waymo self driving call will arrive to allow you to complete your journey.
