benfrain··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
I’d like to see all social media sites require proper age verification, much like any gambling sites in the UK have to. No under 18 needs social media. Feel, especially for children, they are a net negative.
benfrain··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
macOS for me. Zipping up and down a buffer is noticeably faster (drawing/render wise) in the latest Kitty compared to WezTerm. Using 2019 Intel MBP
benfrain··on Zed on Linux Is Here
I really wish they would bundle up the basic Language Servers with the download (HTML, CSS, TypeScript) so it at least has parity with VSCode in this regard
benfrain··on Future CSS: State Container Queries
You can achieve that with grid right now. Set a row to height zero, with a container inside with overflow: hidden, then toggle that row to height 1fr. Stick whatever transition you want on it — job done
benfrain··on The brand new Thunderbird logo
My eye was drawn to the adaptive Android one first and couldn’t figure out why there was a clock in the middle.

Took my brain a moment to realise it was supposed to be an envelope. Now I’ve seen the clock on that one, I can’t unsee it

benfrain··on WebKit Features in Safari 16.4
I find the dev tools/Web Inspector in Safari incredibly flakey. Just trying to autocomplete a selector in the CSS styles pane often mangles the string and doesn’t autocomplete properties correctly. Hope that Web Inspector gets some significant improvements soon
benfrain··on WezTerm is a GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator written in Rust
As a Neovim user I like that the config is in Lua. There are however odd things that it still doesn’t have compared to Kitty, like the ability to have squared off corners in macOS
benfrain··on The top layer: a solution to z-index:10000
Same. Even reached out to the post author and was hoping they might amend it: https://mobile.twitter.com/benfrain/status/15618030119151902...

Sounds like an attribute does the actual promoting.

benfrain··on Association between ADHD medication and depression: A 10-year follow-up
You clearly don’t have a clue what you are talking about.

I have a child clinically diagnosed with ADHD. It’s absolutely nothing to do with time spent with him. We have stable family home, active life style. etc

He just has a brain that works differently. Not worse. Different. He might struggle to pay attention at school but he’s written two novels!

PS. Religion is horse shit so if that’s the only other thing you have left for me to help him, I’ll take my chances, thanks

benfrain··on Welcome to the era of the hyper-surveilled office
What is the reality here? If a company adds MDM software to a laptop they have given you for work and you use it at home on your home network. Is it easy enough for them (in theory) to get on to the network and look on your kids or partners devices?

Or is that tin hat thinking?

benfrain··on Why isn't there any HiDPI resolution on my M1 Mac?
If you have a 5K2K monitor, as I do, then you are unable to enjoy decent 1.25 scaling. Everything looks pixelated because Apple don’t allow a ‘proper’ HiDPI mode with M1s.

The same monitor is absolutely fine on a 2019 Macbook Pro.

If you use BetterDummy, it creates a ‘fake’ display to mirror to. The result is beautifully clear display on the 5K2K.

This is the crux of the issue. M1 macs can absolutely do nice 1.25 scaling on a 5120*2160 display to give crisp text in the 140dpi range but they disable it.

That is the issue IMHO.

benfrain··on MDN Redesign
Where has the ability to press the ‘/‘ key for instant search gone?????
benfrain··on Thoughts on Markdown
I was astonished at the length of that article as I kept reading and thinking the same, ‘isn’t this what he just said before???’ I’m happy to read long-form but I feel that piece would have benefited greatly from substantial editing
benfrain··on The complicated futility of WordPress
No commenting!
benfrain··on The complicated futility of WordPress
My blog has been on Wordpress since about 2007.

It works, and I appreciate that it’s free but I’ve always hated working with it.

If someone made a node based equivalent (so I can at least use a modern templating language) that supported comments I would be all over it.

The commenting system is the only real reason I stay. There’s nothing else I can find that doesn’t necessitate stitching multiple services together just to get commenting that I can find.

And as for being able to spin up a local dev version for casual edits — horrid DX! I wonder whether a big reason social media has stolen our online interactions over the years is because there are few (no?) blogging platforms that support comments?!

benfrain··on Ask HN: How should I use my $2000 training budget before end of year?
https://benfrain.com/video-courses/ultimate-text-editing-pro...

It’s linked from the Sublime site too: https://www.sublimetext.com/support

Full disclosure: I am the author.

benfrain··on Ask HN: How should I use my $2000 training budget before end of year?
What text editor do you use? Get a course on that. Totally transferable skill no matter what you end up doing.

I know a good one if you use Sublime Text ;)

benfrain··on WezTerm – A GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator and multiplexer
Any Kitty users tried this? I’ve found Kitty to be exemplary so would be curious if anyone finds this an improvement?
benfrain··on A Chemical Hunger – Part V: Livestock Antibiotics
You mean ‘fattened’, not ‘flattened’, right? Unless those guys had a thing for steam roll-erred livestock :D
benfrain··on Sublime Text 4
Even taking performance out of the equation, ‘Go to Symbol in Project’ more than makes up for anything VSCode has. I’m amazed VSCode still doesn’t have that
benfrain··on Sublime Text 4
If you want the same language treatment as say, VS Code, install the LSP plugin. It is the exact same thing
benfrain··on Sublime Text 4
I’ve found NeoVimtageous to be a good stand in
benfrain··on Sublime Text 4
I laughed. A lot.

Here’s the discord server https://discord.gg/D43Pecu

I agree it’s not straightforward to know it exists but that’s probably the point. Once you do know I literally just googled ‘Sublime Text Discord’ and it was the first result. Look in the #announcement channel there. Been using v4 builds for months. Love it so much I’m recording a course on it!

Has anyone mentioned the Zergotech Freedom? New to the market and built like a tank. Review: https://benfrain.com/review-zergotech-freedom-ergonomic-mech...

The glass sliding armrests are certainly unique.

benfrain··on The beautiful Silent ThunderBolt-3 PC
Which ones did you try that were no good or not suitable?
benfrain··on The beautiful Silent ThunderBolt-3 PC
One more question — those magnetic connections, can it connect both ways? What I mean it, cable running away in either direction or is it orientation specific?
benfrain··on The beautiful Silent ThunderBolt-3 PC
Fantastic, thanks for the clarification. I'll be swapping Macbook Pro (work) for Mac Mini (personal) so this could be the way forward. Thanks.
benfrain··on The beautiful Silent ThunderBolt-3 PC
Amazing, like MagSafe again. I'm thinking that may be the way forward to avoid a KVM.

With TB — can you literally just unplug from one Laptop/PC and connect to another and everything is back up and running on the 2nd computer?

benfrain··on Why Google Fired Me
