benevpayor··on "Attrition is a group statistic. It doesn't apply to me."
I think he's trying to say that there's a difference between your odds and the population odds. The key is to know thy self.

"The difference is that if you can run 50 miles without breaking a sweat and do pull ups using only your pinky, it's pretty clear that you will make it in the special forces baring a freak accident."

Leadership and team-building abilities are a significant success factor due to peer evaluations. You could be a 0.1%'er in physical ability and still get peered out because no one trusts you or wants you in their squad. Like a startup, your ability to build relationships is key to success.

benevpayor··on What Being a Handyman Has Taught Me About Male Insecurity
Do you ever get the client that wants to learn how to do the improvements? My house is my largest investment. I don't want to screw it up with an amateur fix, but I would love to work side by side with an expert to learn how to do the more advanced stuff correctly.
benevpayor··on The High Price of Being Single in America
This was not my experience at all. When my wife and I married and combined incomes we jumped a bracket, didn't qualify for IRA withholding, tuition credits (I was in night school at the time), or DC's first time home buyer's credit. Two people with career salaries are much better off (with respect to taxes) before marriage... yes, we gamed out filing jointly and separately - we got hosed either way.
benevpayor··on 1/13 noon at MIT: Protest wrongful prosecution of Aaron Swartz
SOPA is an example of a law with bi-partisan support that was blocked after technologists outside of the two-party system rallied to block it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_SOPA_and_PIPA
benevpayor··on US Attorney Chided Swartz On Day of Suicide
Suicide is the catalyst, but it is not the reason for the protest. The reason is that no U.S. citizen should face 30 years in prison, $1,000,000 in fines, and a trial that would lead to financial ruin (no matter the outcome) for making publicly funded documents public. This reads like something that would happen in China, not here.

SOPA much?
benevpayor··on How would I get started?
I don't see this as a shortcut for preliminary research. I saw it as an attempt to generate discussion about disrupting a sector with high barriers to entry.
benevpayor··on Please Don’t Watch NBC Tonight. Or Any Night
I put this on the IOC more than NBC. World sporting organizations like IOC and FIFA (hell, let's throw in the NCAA while we are at it) have sold their souls. It's just plain sad how corrupt and counter to their mission they have become.
benevpayor··on Making shit work is everyone's job
Just don't break it while you're trying to be a hero.
benevpayor··on Coding Horror - Welcome to the Post PC Era
I hope the barrier to entry to be a producer will stay as low as it is now. I worry that as PC demand goes down, the cost to get started in programming will go up. I started to learn how to code web sites while procrastinating one afternoon during finals week; I discovered Apache on my macbook. The barrier to entry was almost accidental, because I had all this great stuff on my computer waiting for me to discover it. Those experiences will be more rare in the post-PC erra.
benevpayor··on Steve Jobs was right: Dropbox is a feature, not a product
Agreed. You may end up going with one platform, but I'll never have all my collaborators on my platform of choice.
