bencxr··on Cost of a 51% attack for different cryptocurrencies?
These numbers are based off the current price of hashrate. As soon as you try to buy significant amounts for larger currencies like Bitcoin, the numbers skyrocket.

The nice-hashable column on the site shows how much hash power is available for purchase.

To read the page naively would be a little like claiming one could hoard 51% of the oil supply given today's price at the pump. In reality, as soon as you started buying in large quantities, the price would skyrocket (making that attack very much more costly), suppliers would cut you off, and others would notice.

bencxr··on Bitcoin crosses $10B market cap again
it wouldn't be a flash crash if there was no demand. it would be a crash. the flash crash happened because there was insufficient liquidity on one exchange - as soon as the market sought to fill the gaps, it went right back up.
bencxr··on Reasons to work from home
thanks for letting us know, we're on it now!
bencxr··on Show HN: I Made a Website to Crowdsource the Best WFH Excuses
interesting to see how some of these have received huge numbers of downvotes.. e.g. this one: http://wfh.ninja/?quoteId=7
bencxr··on Bitcoin is Unsustainable?
for day to day usage not all the data needs to be kept. for example, you could keep just the unspent outputs (instead of all previous transactions).

But yes, some archival nodes would be needed to keep the entire history.

bencxr··on Reddit
this is really the interesting point of the article for me.

it could be the first cryptocoin actively used based for rewards/sponsorships etc. See http://ltbcoin.com/ as an example.

bencxr··on Facebook is down
down for me as well, messenger included
bencxr··on A CryptoCubic Protocol for Hacker-Proof Off-Chain Bitcoin Transactions [pdf]
you could also "make change" by exchanging ownership of the $100 address for 5 $20 addresses, and change those down into 10 $2 addresses each. there's very little cost of executing this algorithm several times over for a "single" purchase.
bencxr··on Bitcoin contracts
Even in it's current form, your grandma's wallet balance would resemble that of her BoA checking account, where the spendable amount would be a total of the easily-redeemable (Pay to pubkey hash) transactions.

More complex transactions would show up in more advanced wallets (possibly separately), and that is the way it happens in the real world now. Say you hold an options contract or a bond on some stock exchange - it's "spendable" but doesn't show up on your everyday bank account balance. This is useful money as we know it now. The allowance for such flexible transactions is a feature and not a weakness :)

bencxr··on Ask HN: Where are the 750k Bitcoins lost by Mt. Gox?
while in theory possible, this approach has not been done because it is said to be a slippery slope down the lines of being against "bitcoin neutrality".

once the feature exists to treat one set of coins different from another, it leaves the protocol open to control by centralized parties - they could ban the use of "unidentified coins", etc.

bencxr··on Outlook.com DNS records disappeared
Based on what I have heard, the issue was caused by a bad active directory GPO that caused firewall rules to refuse DNS requests. Neither outlook/xbox/etc would have had any control over it.

I heard that the issue has since been solved internally from 4.30 PST, though DNS changes often take time to propagate externally, taking TTL settings and ISP caches into consideration.

bencxr··on Bitcoin $600
People ARE buying/selling on Mtgox at 600. However, the price is not "real" because it is inflated by the inability to withdraw USD from Mtgox.

What is happening is that people are buying BTC on Mtgox and then transferring it to other exchanges to withdraw their USD.

For more accurate price information I suggest goign off coinbase or bitstamp.

bencxr··on Developer demands “big contribution” from Microsoft before supporting WP8 and W8
As it stands now, WP8 is the incumbent. If all developers applied the "pay us to make it for your new platform" attitude, it doesn't bode well for newcomers.

Also, the tone used can be taken in bad taste, since this was a kickstarter asking for "support".

bencxr··on In 8 months at Microsoft, I learned these things
one of the things i liked about Microsoft is that you can move teams (pretty) easily. i myself have had different experiences/practices in both the teams i was a part of.
bencxr··on I've become what I wasn't supposed to be
Thanks for that. I'm still working in a "dotcom". Soon, I hope to be working with the likes of you. Could you go a little more into your transition from match.com to yc-startup, the sacrifices and challenges along your way?
bencxr··on SimCity Update: Straight Answers from Lucy
This week many of the stability issues were mitigated, and I began to enjoy my game. To be honest, while I didn't ask for the multiplayer features, they were a bonus when they worked. I could even ignore the DRM if the game worked.

But posts such as this can only make my blood boil. What I read is neither "straight" in a sense of honesty nor an "answer" of any sort to the downtime/mismanagement they've done.

Shame on you, Lucy. The next time you want to lie, at least don't claim it's "straight". Only there won't be a next time.

bencxr··on Why I hate Google Chrome?
A confirmation dialog is something one would expect in a consumer-facing app - and it isn't difficult to build.

I'd be interested to know what their design decision was not to do that.

bencxr··on Andrew Mason's statement about being fired as Groupon CEO
If nothing else, the fact that he wrote this letter suggests that he knows to some extent what went wrong.

I'd argue it is better to work with someone who has made mistakes before (and will be less likely to make them again) than someone who hasn't.

bencxr··on Google Fails the Turing Test
The question is, if Google sold the Nexus (say, $329 from $299) with a slight markup to raise their support, would you still buy it?
bencxr··on The last day
Great piece. What is important to know is that it is not over. I hope there will be a part 2 somewhere in the future - telling of the comeback!
bencxr··on Why Is the Surface So Bad?
Personally, this is fine with me. I don't tend to trust commercials where people "use the thing", e.g. Apple's Siri commercial.

It is just too easy to show off a few "happy path" scenarios in 30 seconds.

bencxr··on AnandTech: Microsoft Surface Review
It comes down to expectations. I'm not sure about the Verge, but Anand is someone who understands the limitations of hardware - There were several interesting points on wifi performance, display resolution notes and what could be achieved on the NV Tegra3. Anand's review is a technical one (he know's this is v1 of a product) and comes from a content-creator's POV. That is what resounded with me more than the verge's article.
bencxr··on New $250 Chromebook
Exactly. Tablets/Netbooks have been going down in price for some time, so while this is cheap by hardware standards, I would take into account the hidden costs - that many users will need to shell out ~$30 a month on data plans.

So this $250 + ~$600-700 over 2 years for a total of almost $1000. I'd consider that instead of the "low sticker price" when comparing options.

bencxr··on Google Passes Microsoft’s Market Value as PC Loses to Web
Yet another "market value defines losing/winning" article between 2 products that don't even compete.
bencxr··on I only got that job because I’m a girl
I'm not saying the poster got the job because she was a girl (or not), but the bottom line (imo) is that you have to play the hand you're dealt.

Some people are born rich, into high society etc and some are not. I don't see people unhappy that others are saying they "got the job because their dad was powerful".

Whether or not there was a real advantage doesn't matter. If there was a real advantage, well thank you, I'd take that advantage. If not, prove it. Either way, you still don't deserve to feel upset over it.

bencxr··on Why we Disabled Google Checkout / Google Wallet on our Site
I would not be surprised if this "issue" gets resolved within a few weeks or so. I had problems with getting my own wallet to work on a Google apps domain account and that is how long it took them to get it working (yes, I know weakness.com is a commercial account, but google doesn't appear to be prioritizing it).

I wonder if weakness.com would reinstate the payment method at that time.

bencxr··on Why American Phone, Cable and Internet Bills are so High
I agree. Perhaps the "free market" effect is considerably weaker here perhaps due to the popularity of subsidized phone plans which lock in consumers and hide the real costs. To make matters worse, wireless service cannot be compared with price per mb alone, as there is also a bandwidth quality/coverage factor to look at.
bencxr··on Why American Phone, Cable and Internet Bills are so High
This may be true to some degree, but I suspect less than it would suggest. Not all the bookshops follow the price on the cover.
