ben336··on A Conference Stole My Identity
He admitted he was trying to impersonate them on Twitter. Thats the type of move that will get anyone suspended.
ben336··on Sublime Text Development Status
They don't enforce paying for the editor. Those users may or may not be actually paying. You're right that it does seem like they could afford more staff. But its also pretty clear the guy who created it wants to write code and not deal with the other parts of being a "company" (see lack of public responses/updates). He created it, so he can market it/develop it as he sees fit.

I admire what he's done, and respect his choice if he's really not expanding because he likes to code and doesn't want to deal with running a business. But I also now use Vim because I didn't trust Sublime's future.

ben336··on Sublime Text Development Status
Better title: Sublime Text is still alive.

The synopsis seems to be that development is continuing, there are long term plans, but that development is slow and will probably continue that way at least until 3 is released (which there is no date given for).

So basically nothing has changed :)

[Edit: Title fixed to be less link-baity. Thanks!]

ben336··on Getting More From Vim
Well I'm glad I met expectations at least then :)
ben336··on Getting More From Vim
Sorry you didn't find it helpful. I'll keep that stuff in mind going forward.
ben336··on Getting More From Vim
To be clear, I explicitly say that you shouldn't install each of those plugins. They're meant as an idea of whats out there. I'm sorry you've found the series superficial. Any thoughts on what would make it more useful?
ben336··on Learning Vim in 2014: Configuring Vim
Author here: I gave a general overview of how Vim configuration works in the post, but would love to hear your favorite Vim configurations or short functions. Put them in the comments, or here, and if there are a bunch of good ones I'll collect them into an update later.
ben336··on Disable Visited Links for Firefox
My understanding was that this security loophole had been mostly dealt with, with the exception of weird situations where you can trick the user into clicking on things based on the color of items on the page. Sites can't tell what color the links are unless you tell them.
ben336··on Ask HN: What did I do so wrong in this coding interview
cell.js line 21 actually does leak a global, its an undeclared var reference, and will be attached to window in the browser.
ben336··on Understanding The Backbone Mindset
There is not. As explained in the review, this is a book about the challenges that inspired the author to write Marionette and some meditations on dealing with them. It's not specifically about Marionette.

So it gives a lot of insight into the framework for marionette users, but it also has plenty of relevant stuff for anyone who uses Backbone, because you still have to solve the same problems (excessive boilerplate, managing child Views, communication between Views)

ben336··on Vim as Language
I'm looking into this now. Had never had anyone complain before. I'm not going to get rid of cloudflare, my site has been up consistently after several hours on the front page, which obviously doesn't happen for everybody. Having their caching is worthwhile. But it does seem like it's possible to disable this challenge page going forward. [1]

I'll take a look when I'm off work later.

ben336··on Vim as Language
Sorry, looks like you've done something to make cloudflare flag you: https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/200171816-W...

I use them to manage caching and anti-DDOS for my site. Most people don't see that message, not sure what would have set it off for you. It's not a site specific feature, just a byproduct of using cloudflare.

ben336··on Vim as Language
Yep, that post is one of the things that pointed me down the road to the mindset in this article, and I mentioned it at the bottom. I still don't use everything in that post though. The depth of Vi by itself is crazy.
ben336··on Vim as Language
Yep, thats the advantage of Vim's philosophy as a whole. You don't have to learn it all at once, and what you do learn gains power as you move forward.
ben336··on An analysis of Lionel Messi
1000x is a bit much, but double/triple production is hugely significant when you realize that teams are constrained to only playing 11 players at once. Its not like they can make up his production with 2 average players playing together.

ben336··on Dart 1.5
Is anybody using Dart for significant production code outside of Google? (Not mocking, genuinely curious to hear whats being done with it)
ben336··on The best 4K monitor doesn’t exist yet
The idea is "best X for most people". They will occasionally recommend some higher-market stuff (IE $1600 for their recommended standing desk) but only when they feel the low-end stuff is junk. I've found them to be fairly reliable. When I've bought or already owned stuff they've recommended it generally has ranged from "decent value" to "great choice" Since they review a range of products for each thing and give tradeoffs its generally a great one-stop place to make decisions on things you don't want to spend a long time researching
ben336··on My ECMAScript 7 wishlist
Extending a browser provided prototype shouldn't be done lightly. You certainly couldn't do something like that if you were writing a library, as you might conflict with somebody elses implementation of the same add on.

There's also value in having things like this standardized. If its a common idiom, its worth including in the standard to allow people to use it without having to worry about what utility libraries they're including.

ben336··on Firebug 2.0
That is useful, but doesn't really seem to cover the original comment's assertion that Firebug is still "inarguably the best"
ben336··on Firebug 2.0
Can you explain why? I've never found a use case that it covers better than Chrome, and it seems to bloat FF a bit. But I'm very willing to believe I just don't understand what it offers.
ben336··on Is Go an Object-Oriented Language?
I think the "object"-less OO tag is a bit overblown. Structs are objects. Just because Go creators didn't choose to name them that doesn't mean there's a fundamental difference between Go structs and other languages' objects.
ben336··on Neovim Newsletter – Issue #1 – A New Hope
YCM is great. Depending on the language though you may need additional plugins to get "smart" completion into Vim. For instance, tern.js does this for Javascript:

ben336··on Dash – Beautiful instant offline docs for almost everything
Are you saying that its shady that it has a free trial period (with nags) or that it used to be free and then became a product that the developer charged for? And how are either of these things shady?
ben336··on Chris Lattner on Swift
Our entire software industry is built on the power of abstractions. While its always great to know as much as you can about the layers you are building on, solid abstractions that allow you to get away with NOT knowing that unless you want to or need to optimize to extremes are a great thing.
ben336··on Getting Started with Ember Data
Is Ember Data considered stable yet? Last I'd heard it was in a beta state but was starting to be used in some production environments.
ben336··on Hachette/Amazon Business Interruption
they made it clear that was "weighted demand" though, so items sold, not items provided. You'd need "Hachette sales through Amazon", a number unlikely to be available beyond Amazon/Hachette employees/execs.
ben336··on Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 3
The problem is it WASN'T $300 cheaper. It was initially priced at iPad levels. It got heavily discounted for a while, but the initial run was positioned as an iPad competitor, not a low end disruptor. Which was crazy given the lack of apps to start.
ben336··on Removing User Interface Complexity, or Why React is Awesome
URL doesn't appear to change in chrome, but the back button just cycles through the various demo screens after you've scrolled down for a while.
ben336··on Removing User Interface Complexity, or Why React is Awesome
Curious why you think Backbone is optimized for beginners as opposed to Angular. I get that Backbone and React have fewer concepts to learn and thus are more approachable. But if you're building serious applications I'd say Backbone and React require MORE experience, because there are fewer choices made for you than Angular (and especially Ember).
