I came, I debated, I got pissed off, I got banned. I liked HN more when it wasn't full of obtuse fuckwits...

bellyfullofbac··on Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service
In the EU new cars now are mandated to have an automatic way to call the emergency services after a crash, I wonder if the governments have a clause about what would happen if 3G is turned off (I guess they're not planning to do that for a while yet).

If I were in power and I genuinely cared about saving the planet, I'd figure out how to make cars without this auto-emergency-dial system more expensive to insure; that way, people would look at newer cars more favorabily, and I'd incentivize electric cars as well. But hey, luckily the car lobby is still pretty strong in the France and Germany!

bellyfullofbac··on SARS-CoV-2 infects human adipose tissue and elicits an inflammatory response
I'm going to issue 2 ignorant assumptions of mine and a "could it be" hypothesis, but assuming 1) That not a lot of Africans are obese and 2) Covid has so far not hit Africa that bad; Could it be that their lack of fat tissue is the reason?

Yeah, this is the Internet and I could do research to confirm or deny 1) and 2), but hey I'm just here because I'm distracting myself from work right now.

bellyfullofbac··on Defund the Police meets the crime wave
... with a sadly very stupid title. One that gets an instant angry reaction from "the other side" instead of a discussion. Even Obama says that much: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/obama-defund-the-police-slogan/ . You even have to write this comment to explain "Actually, the idea behind those 3 words are..."

If I were in charge of naming the idea, I'd suggest something like "Get Rid of Thug Cops!". Focus on how cops are supposed to be part of society instead of prison guards. Focus on the fact that e.g. Western European police get multiple years of education.

Even the UK has a problem, since the lying thieving government has been squeezing budgets for the last decade, the police have been underfunded there and it's harder to do the "be a part of society" part of policing.

But it's incredible how a protest slogan has been morphed by "the other side" into "this is actually happening, and look at all the results", when, as many have said, no actual defunding is happening.

bellyfullofbac··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
Oh well, boo hoo. This feels like one of those woke "Be careful what you say" speech police bullshit. Look at me, I called you "woke", I think I'm plenty left and progressive, but the whole speech policing that seems like done a lot by the left makes me roll my eyes at vast swathes of them.

On a less emotional side, dude used the term "social anxiety", he doesn't seem like he's lacking the cultural know-how. Don't be so condescending towards people... or to put it in your terms, did you ever consider not to be so condescending in your opinions of other people?

Sorry to dang for breaking many rules.

bellyfullofbac··on Show HN: Minimalist offline journal app with a chat interface
The first word I noticed on that page: "Declutter".

Yeah, the minimalist websites of today can sometimes be too minimalist, but this... is the opposite.

Edit: ah yeah of course it's an optimized-for-mobile page. Watched the video, it uses hashtags, this potential user says: pass.

bellyfullofbac··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
Well, ignore the last bit then, but I hope you don't ignore the first part, I'm genuinely curious if you didn't like my suggestion and would use that beer thing to dismiss me as another "who doesn't get it".

If I had a physical discomfort and asked online for ideas what it could be, and someone said e.g. "it could be that you're lacking magnesium, you should confirm that with a professional.", I would do so. I already asked for advice, to dismiss people giving them would be, well what's the point of me asking?

bellyfullofbac··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
No, you should not be.

/s

It's a rule of thumb, not an absolute. This part I'm not being sarcastic abour: sorry if your social anxiety problems also include not being able to get nuance.

bellyfullofbac··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
I have the same thought as grandparent commenter, and your last paragraph isn't making my perception any better.

IMO, go to a career coach, or psychiatrist, and get a neutral perspective of whether they see you as having a difficult personality. I've read that most people decide on hiring on the idea of whether they'd want to have a beer with that person. Yeah it's not fair, but well, they're paying for those beers (being metaphoric here), and how badly do you need one?

bellyfullofbac··on How I spend less time on YouTube
You can do the same with StackOverflow's "Hot Network" questions, and "New from our blog"... How is that not a dark pattern, I'm trying to find how to do blah in Java, and a question about world building would pique my interest...
bellyfullofbac··on Evergrande has defaulted on its debt, Fitch Ratings says
The Icelandic finance minister was flying to the UK (or was it NY) to have some talks about the crisis, he was so worried about the banks collapsing, he brought cash in case his credit card stopped working while he was travelling...
bellyfullofbac··on My apartment building announced it's installing Latch
To OP, glaucon makes a good point. The "fight" can be done by informing neighbors of the issues with this dumb solution, e.g. a company tracking your comings and goings, and how secure are their servers, what if an evil bigcorp buys them, etc...

One benefit would be less need to change locks when someone loses a key, but since OP says they already use keyfobs, that's not a new benefit.

bellyfullofbac··on Why I stopped releasing EasyOS as an ISO file
The next paragraph about her non-tech 88 year old stepmother seems worse, he's throwing all of those people under the bus by comparing them to her.

Vintage PCs don't really have USB, but well, in his defense, people working with vintage PCs are already used to extra steps (e.g. if the PC has token ring and they want to connect it to Ethernet), so they'll need to add the extra step of "Write contents of USB image to ISO"...

bellyfullofbac··on Renault Zoe NCAP crash rating: zero stars [pdf]
There was a picture I saw on Twitter a while ago. The UK has apparently/obviously not adopted the new EU standard, so there was a photo of product packaging with 2 energy labels, one that says "valid for the UK", and the gadget had a B rating, and one valid for the EU, with a E rating...
bellyfullofbac··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
I thin an appropriate analogy to your question is the question "Why haven't you written your masterpiece novel? I thought one of the major benefits of a computer is the ease with which you can write and publish anything."
bellyfullofbac··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
TBH, this feels like a libertarian mindset of "Everyone will try to lie and cheat you!".

Why should they lie? If their data had something different to their press release, lying and then getting caught (e.g. by a whistleblower) would damage their reputation. If their data shows it's bad, as responsible scientists why shouldn't they come out with the truth to protect the general public, and say "We'll continue work on the Omicron-specific vaccine.".

Unless you think their main motive is to boost their stock price in the short term. That kind of thinking should be reserved for people dealing with the blockhain-ponzi schemes.

bellyfullofbac··on Crypto lobbying is going ballistic
I guess it'll never go to zero without legislation... but the Internet's power to make communities from far-flung people mean nowadays we have a community of flat-earthers, as well as a community of rubes, and they'll continue to believe in it as it bubbles up and bursts again and again.

The number of rubes you could convince about tulips in Amsterdam was finite, but on the Internet...

bellyfullofbac··on Twitter acquires Quill

@jack(ass)'s announcement that he was quitting Twitter was a tweet of... a fucking screenshot of a wordy e-mail.

bellyfullofbac··on PCB Business Card
Unless the attacker is using a false flag operation...

Imagine if the card said Elon Musk, or for a proper tech hero, Steve Wozniak.

bellyfullofbac··on An engineer fighting Texas’s ban on Israel boycotts
You really are conflating a lot of different things so you can argue that you're right... I'd try to explain everything you're mixing and matching to build your house of argument cards, and why they don't belong together, but I think you'd just gather more cards.
bellyfullofbac··on An engineer fighting Texas’s ban on Israel boycotts
Whatever it entails, there is no explicit law saying "If you want to partner with an entity of the State of Texas, you or your company are not allowed to protest against China or Chinese companies".

I guess Xi Jinping should buy off Republican lawmakers to get such a law instituted.

bellyfullofbac··on An engineer fighting Texas’s ban on Israel boycotts
So, is he or his company allowed to protest against China, as allowed by the 1st amendment? Hmm, no law banning that...
bellyfullofbac··on An engineer fighting Texas’s ban on Israel boycotts
How can a government contract have a "discrimination" clause in it?

What next? How about a MAGA state saying "You have to acknowledge that Trump won the 2020 elections to work with us"?

Wow, the comments in here are really opening my eyes to what HN actually is instead of what I thought it was.

bellyfullofbac··on Amount of Covid found in the wastewater in Boston
In the northern hemisphere? My theory is in spring/summer/fall people are hanging out outside, and as winter comes they think "I've been fine socializing the last few months, hanging out inside will be safe." and socialize indoors, where the lack of fresh air means the virus will spread...
bellyfullofbac··on Ask HN: What is your favorite piece of entertainment of the last three years?
Get 5 comedians, give them silly tasks with a mock authoritarian 1-man judge and 10 episodes of competition: Taskmaster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4YhsooE5xY (they've done 12 seasons, and there are versions from other nations, although as usual the US version stunk)

The Amazon series The Expanse.

Auto-complete just suggested the novel "A Gentleman in Moscow".

bellyfullofbac··on No Easter Eggs in Curl
He could put the easter egg externally, e.g. create a page on his site that would react differently if fetched with the curl user-agent compared to all other user agents. So all the code would be server side and it'd still be an easter egg, because you get it by entering a certain input.

e.g. curl hxxps://haxx.se/something-cute-here

Obviously one day someone might see that page in the browser, thinks they need to get an offline copy of it, does a curl and gets something different. But I guess that's a surprising behavior of the server and not the client. Lots of servers already do this to do a first-level filter against people who can't figure out how to set curl's user-agent...

bellyfullofbac··on Bob Dole has died
I think you're drawing the wrong conclusions from some numbers. Biden most likely got a lot of votes because of voter turnout, with his voters desperately wanting to get rid of Trump.
bellyfullofbac··on Fe – An emerging smart contract language for the Ethereum blockchain
> Lots of movement around unique items, characters, or more generally control of virtual property and managing them through a blockchain so as to allow use across gaming platforms.

Come again? Platforms as in different games? Then one would need the cooperation of the games publishers to make the items shareable. Platforms as in different devices? No different. Why does this need blockchain? A cenral authority works just fine. Is it to prevent scammers? Hah, I've read 1 too many "smart contract exploits" to know scammers will just concentrate on that.
