belenos46··on Why I believe Rails is still relevant in 2019
Man. I like two things. Boring languages/frameworks, and minimalism.

Boring languages/frameworks Just Work, and are usually pretty secure.

Minimalist --which is to say, making something as simple as possible, but no simpler-- means fewer moving parts which can break in production.

90% of what my places of employment and clients need is the same old shit, and I like to build it so that when something breaks, I can jump in and hammer out the broken thing and get the process moving again without needing a ton of research.

But if they did, we'd be able to patch it at home :D
belenos46··on Bullet Journaling (2016)
That would be great. I may ping you in a couple weeks to see what your opinion is. I really like the idea, but I also have a notebook and a camera in my phone.
belenos46··on Fundamental rule of traffic: building new roads makes people drive more (2015)
Likely the latter, and for that we can largely thank large motorist groups in the US. Michelin comes to mind, as they created their "Michelin star" metric to give people a reason to drive places, and then lobbied like hell to create town/city layouts that mandated driving.

A hundred years later, driving is a massive part of US culture, and we have trouble seeing the problem because that's "just how things are".

belenos46··on Bullet Journaling (2016)
The hype looks good on this, but the reviews are pretty brutal. Losing pages on export, then updating the original file to the lossy file? Yikes.
belenos46··on Bullet Journaling (2016)
Using a standard lined notebook, I just counted out lines and number of pages. So, if I had a notebook with a hundred sheets (200 pages) and 26 lines per page, I need to set aside four pages at the start of the notebook to have a different page entry on each line.
belenos46··on With trust destroyed, Facebook is haunted by old data deals
Pretty sure Travis didn't. IIRC he had the single largest bloc of voting rights (~18%), but that can still be overruled.

~58% (Zuckerberg's share percentage) can't be ousted no matter how the other voting shares vote.

...Oh, right. The things under the electrical tape patch on my laptop :D

belenos46··on IQ Matters Less Than You Think
The expectations part is the brutal one for me. Did it for years. Only started trying to not in the last year. Lost a few folks I thought were friends, but turned out to just be folks who were outsourcing their problemsolving to me.
belenos46··on The $349 Nokia 7.1 brings a low price, flagship-style design to the US
Why do these things treat a finger-print reader as a feature? That alone puts a phone on on my no-buy list.
belenos46··on Air pollution causes ‘huge’ reduction in intelligence: study
I assume that the parent poster is referring to Sherlock Holmes.
belenos46··on Suffering, not just happiness, weighs in the utilitarian calculus
Bondage, domination, sadism, and masochism is what that stands for. You've correctly identified one facet of domination, for some folks.

There's a lot left there which your "BDSM is about social hierarchy" doesn't even begin to address.

That's what I'd call them.

I've always like troubleshooter, though: when there's trouble, they shoot it.

belenos46··on Many Colleges Fail to Improve Critical-Thinking Skills
It's a quote from Glengarry Glen Ross. That is one of Alec Baldwin's lines.
belenos46··on Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922)
And I choose to feel okay about that.
belenos46··on What Emotion Goes Viral the Fastest? (2014)
Anger wasn't supposed to be surprising, hence parent's use of punctuation. Awe was supposed to be the surprising one.
belenos46··on How to Avoid Going to Jail Under 18 U.S.C. For Lying to Government Agents
College definitely has something to do with it --for all the reasons you just rattled off. We get fucked once on, say, a misdemeanor, and then we learn this FUCK out of how to handle cops. And a fed is just a cop with better shoes.
belenos46··on How to Avoid Going to Jail Under 18 U.S.C. For Lying to Government Agents
as I am not surprised, I assume the author was using "literally" according to its secondary definition: "figuratively"
belenos46··on The Programmer’s Guide to a Sane Workweek
Obvious reasons.
belenos46··on Who Will Suffer Most from Climate Change? (Hint: Not You)
And three million kilotons ahead on emissions total, which are what matter. Also, how and where was this data collected? We know that we can't trust companies to report this accurately. Was it collected by the state? Since it's not privacy-related, I sort of trust the US to report accurately, whereas I don't trust the PRC to do so.
belenos46··on Lecture from the Man Who Dropped Both Atomic Bombs
Yeah, and that's pretty much my point. No matter how expedient and net-win a prospect like that might be, it's still not just.

I think we agree, I'm just saying this because I hear way too much about 'right' and 'wrong' with armed conflict. It's all wrong -ALL of it.

belenos46··on Lecture from the Man Who Dropped Both Atomic Bombs
Nothing justifies a massacre. Or war, or any sort of nonconsensual act (I'm asserting here that murdering people en masse is nonconsensual). There's no casus belli that makes war just.

But making shit stop, and stop right now? That can be useful as opposed to just.

belenos46··on Lecture from the Man Who Dropped Both Atomic Bombs
Definitely. In general, though -all other things being equal- if I have to decide who dies, I will decide they won't be people fighting on my side.
belenos46··on Potentially Reprogramming Cancer Cells Back to Normal Cells
Well, sort of, but no.

The thing is, your given (some event corrupts the cell's DNA) needs to be examined. Let's agree that some event corrupts the cell's DNA as you suggest, and then follow up with some questions.

1) Where in the enormous strand was it corrupted?

1a) Was it one place, or several?

2) What corrupted it?

2a) Again, was it one cause, or five different causes, three of which we don't know about and can't currently track?

3) Does the mechanism of action (the thing that caused the mutation) change the way a specific pathology progresses, even if it's a similar mutation in the same area? (yes)

So that's sort of the problem with cancer research. They're not trying to solve a single problem with a bunch of different presentations, they're trying to solve a fuckton of problems with a similar number of presentations, some of which are similar even though they have different roots.

belenos46··on University Students are Afraid of Everything
Well, it's not so much 'words that are assigned social stigma' as it is 'words that become red flags for people who might be murdered right after hearing them'.

Which I think is a pretty solid argument for not using those words, unless you're cool with frequently hanging the threat of murder over <insert minority>'s heads. Personally, I'm not cool with that.
