beginningguava··on China ‘Is the Only One in the Race’ to Make Electric Buses, Taxis and Trucks
It's called national socialism. Nobody wants to say it but modern China has essentially copied the economic system of Nazi Germany. Capitalism is simply a tool to be used rather than some great ideal of free markets and competition. You can see it by the way they criticize the US for protectionism while actively being the most protectionist country on earth.

The way EV's have been forced is similar to how Hitler created Volkswagen, the People's Car. Hitler wanted an affordable German made car for the German citizens.

They've copied it right down to the extreme ethnic self-interest if the Muslim concentration camps are any indicator and the fact that foreigners aren't allowed to own companies in China. Also copying the seizing of neighboring lands.

beginningguava··on Amazon's cloud business is competing with its own customers
It should fix itself eventually, either companies will choose to use Google or Microsoft rather than AWS or the government will smack AWS with monopoly laws. The main concern there is that Bezos has become so entrenched in DC with the washington post, DOD cloud contract, and new headquarters that it's hard to tell if we can rely on the government to do anything

Regardless of what it is now you should be happy it exists, look at present day Turkey and 1960s Iran to see how fast freedoms can be stripped by changes in government. Tomorrow it could be leftists being censored. The Communist Control Act is still around in the US, just hasn't been enforced. There's effectively nothing to stop Trump from calling his enemies communists and throwing them in jail and with his stacked Supreme Court who knows if they would rule it unconstitutional?

beginningguava··on Amazon FBA Experiment
Is he aware that Trump ended the program that subsidizes shipping cheap products from China? I imagine this will pretty much kill all FBA when it goes into effect

beginningguava··on Ansel Adams’ pictures of LA recall an era of war factories and 10-cent hot dogs
The idea of anyone invading the east coast is hilarious, Appalachia would make Afghanistan look like an amusement park in comparison.

Once upon a time people wondered why people would do online shopping or use credit cards when cash got the job done. Crypto will eventually become the most logical option for most companies, it won't happen over night but it will eventually. Accept payment in any cryptocurrency and then convert them to a stablecoin so you aren't affected by price changes due to speculation
beginningguava··on Inside the British Army's secret information warfare machine
It seems we were the first to do it, the article says that they have tools to influence online polls and spam emails and SMS and were using them as far back as 2009 in the Falkland Islands and to push regime change in Zimbabwe. People have also said Arab Spring wasn't exactly organic as well.
beginningguava··on Operation Ajax: How the CIA’s first attempt at regime change nearly failed
Korean war, Vietnam, and other activities in South America and Africa were all to prevent the spread of communism and soviet influence in general.

"just build your own platform"

The good news is that the continued censorship will fuel adoption of crypto and speed up the demise of parasitic middlemen who take a cut off every transaction

beginningguava··on Operation Ajax: How the CIA’s first attempt at regime change nearly failed
Yet many people are currently begging the US to intervene in with Yeman, Ukraine, and the Myanmar rohingya muslim situation.

Criticism in hindsight is easy, how much worse would things have been if the US hadn't fought communism? Stalin killed 20+ million, Mao 50+ million, Pol Pot 2+ million. Without US intervention Large chunks of South America and Africa would have been competing for the communism kill high score.

Personally I don't want the US intervening because we get criticized no matter what we do and we'd save trillions

beginningguava··on Cambridge Analytica Used Fashion Tastes to Identify Right-Wing Voters
It's just pattern recognition, we have it because it's good for survival.

Maybe that grizzly bear is nice but I'm not going to try and pet it to find out because the stereotype is that it will rip me to shreds

beginningguava··on CIA Intercepts Underpin Assessment Saudi Crown Prince Targeted Khashoggi
These are the same morons who got dozens of their assets killed because they left their chat completely unsecured to the point it could be found in Google search results.

The days of G-men are over, it's a bunch of Ivy league clowns whose daddies couldn't get them a job on wall street.

Of course in this case it's just the CIA trying to sway the public. Look up Operation Mockingbird and then remember that Anderson Cooper interned with the CIA

beginningguava··on CIA Intercepts Underpin Assessment Saudi Crown Prince Targeted Khashoggi
China currently has dozens of journalists "in jail" meaning they are most likely dead and the US media hasn't said a peep. Shouldn't they be calling for sanctions against them, rather than attack Trump for doing just that with his tariffs?
beginningguava··on CIA Intercepts Underpin Assessment Saudi Crown Prince Targeted Khashoggi
The whole thing is strange, there's definitely a lot of different factions in the US fighting behind the scenes for their own agendas, certainly not fighting for the average american.

It should be known that Khashoggi's uncle made billions as a weapons broker and helped the CIA funnel guns to Osama Bin Laden when he was fighting for the CIA as the Mujahdeen.

My inner conspiracy theorist says that the CIA is pissed that Trump shut down their gun running operation in Syria and they want to keep the middle east in chaos forever because it's good for their budget

The fact this story has been covered so much by the media because of "freedom of the press" while they completely ignore China routinely disappearing journalists tells me there's an agenda being pushed. Nothing about this story seems organic

beginningguava··on Microsoft Is Worth as Much as Apple. How Did That Happen?
People aren't as hyped for iPhone 13ABC and aren't upgrading as soon as possible. I haven't seen the news covering the multi-day long wait lines at Apple stores for years.

Microsoft also got it together after dropping Balmer

beginningguava··on U.S. Life Expectancy Falls Further
The opioid epidemic is an amazing example of human psychology and the power of a visual. More people die from it every year than Vietnam, yet there's been no large public outcry to resolve the situation because it isn't right in your face like a 9/11 or pearl harbor. Even ignoring the human impact and just going to economics, those lost lives will cost the US billions in lost productivity over time, yet nobody really cares.

Honestly, somebody should make a Kony2012 style video about it. It was a sham but I can still remember how viral that thing went, because it hit all the buttons of human psychology.

beginningguava··on America’s Epidemic of Empty Churches
If you hold any morals or ideals as having value, then you're beholden to some belief. Whether that's considered "worship" is just semantics

The only alternative is that you have nothing you actually believe in, which for your sake I hope isn't true.

beginningguava··on Common-Knowledge Attacks on Democracy
This is just legacy media trying to regain power. Fake news has been around forever, look up Yellow Journalism.

The difference now is that the 5 multi-national corporations that controlled nearly everything we saw and heard are losing their monopoly on what information reaches the population.

Everybody loved big data and social media when Obama used it to win and when Arab Spring happened. But now it's a threat to democracy, I wonder what changed?

beginningguava··on Microsoft Wins $480M Army HoloLens Contract
>Take self-driving vehicles. Every single piece of technology used in its development could be used with some minor tweaking in a military application

You do realize DARPA funded the competitions that kicked off self-driving cars right? Silicon valley wouldn't exist without the military

beginningguava··on Amazon Timestream – Fast, scalable, fully managed time series database
At what point are open source projects going to change their licensing to prevent the major cloud providers from just stealing their products? I highly doubt AWS built this from scratch. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are going to choke the life out of these projects

Redis and MongoDB at least seem to have woken up

beginningguava··on Major AI conference is moving to Africa in 2020 due to visa issues
if you believe in genetics/evolution it's not luck. The smarter and stronger side wins. Is it luck that you weren't born as a squirrel or some other animal?

My family members fought in wars, paid taxes, and helped build up the country so their descendants could have a better life, calling that nothing but luck is disrespectful to the sacrifices they made.

beginningguava··on Palm Oil Was Supposed to Help Save the Planet
The US led the world in emission reductions in 2018, meanwhile the EU, Canada, India, and China increased their production significantly. Yet the US gets slammed by the global community

https://imgur.com/a/sNWFP3k

beginningguava··on Major AI conference is moving to Africa in 2020 due to visa issues
I never said it was noble, but doing something in your own self-interest can still be positive. Even if the US revolution was for the founders financial benefit, the side effect was the spread of democracy and self-determination across the globe.

They might just be "lines on a map" but they mean something to people, just 50 years ago those "lines" were the difference between living in a communist hellhole and freedom and prosperity. There's a lot of cubans and eastern europeans who risked their lives to get on the other side of some lines on a map and get a better life for themselves and their children.

If people hadn't been willing to fight and die to defend those lines and their ability to live how they want, we wouldn't be able to have this discussion right now

beginningguava··on Major AI conference is moving to Africa in 2020 due to visa issues
>It is kind of sad that we have this way of carving up the world into arbitrary pieces and calling us "us" and them "the enemy".

It's not arbitrary, our ancestors in many cases fought and died to establish those lines so that they could live their lives how they wanted within those lines. They worked hard so that their children and grandchildren and fellow citizens could have better lives within those lines. To discount that as luck is demeaning to the sacrifices of the people who came before you

beginningguava··on I Used to Be Homeless
There's a lot of bureaucrats and cronies taking their cut, I'd be surprised if 10% of that actually made it to the homeless
beginningguava··on Blockchain’s Hype Is Dying According to Corporate America’s Earnings Calls
I compare the 2017 crypto hype to the dot com bubble, people finally realized the potential but the real life value isn't there yet, lot's of scam ICOs just like all the companies that raised money during the tech bubble. Just like the dotcom bubble people said internet/tech was dead, there are people saying blockchain is dead. I think that out of this batch there will be the Google's, Amazon's, etc that emerge and actually deliver real world value as opposed to just hype
beginningguava··on A new Venezuelan ID, created with China's ZTE, tracks citizen behavior
Sanders and Corbyn from the UK both explicitly praised Venezuela when oil was at $120 a barrel. Sanders even said Venezuela was a place where the american dream can really be realized. When oil dropped and the whole thing fell to pieces they pretended that it never happened
beginningguava··on China's brightest children are being recruited to weaponize AI
doubtful, the progressives that humanities departments turn out are the most authoritarian people I know. Many have a quasi-religious propensity to classify anyone who disagrees with them as evil and irredeemable. They'd fit in perfectly with the CPC
beginningguava··on China's brightest children are being recruited to weaponize AI
The solution isn't a ban, it's requiring they become US citizens after they get their degree. Right now we educate them and send them right back. Meanwhile we let in 50,000+ uneducated illegal immigrants a month. It's moronic to allow top tier talent to go back to China rather than keeping them here to benefit the US
beginningguava··on China's brightest children are being recruited to weaponize AI
Unfortunately I think there's a good chance humanity wipes itself out, or at least destroys civilization in the next several centuries. We are still effectively monkeys but have over time developed weapons that are capable of incredible destruction.

The issue with regulating AI kill bots is that much of the technology that could be used for good like self-driving cars can also be weaponized. There's really no way to progress without risk. The only other option would be to ban AI research.

Might be the Amish and Unabomber were right about technology
