beeskneecaps··on My First 80 Days of VR for Exercise
quest v1 no wire but like 4 hour battery life so the wire gets involved.

You also get a semi permanent line down the middle of your head that lasts proportionally to how long you've worn the headset. Also the sinus pressure of having a 5 pound device drooping from your forehead and the red ring around your face and bloodshot eyes (because you didn't blink at all) means you can't go into public for another hour after you use the thing.

if you have the stock cloth piece in your headset, it gets disgusting and you'll have acne by day 3. No way to clean it unless you buy the aftermarket eye piece that isn't porous.

I tried working out in VR but realized that working out in RR is way more fun.

beeskneecaps··on Facebook Pay
This isn't one of those pay to pay apps now, is it?
beeskneecaps··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Agreed, it just is highly unlikely that the LinkedIn resume is out of date for most folks. Asking for a resume without asking if the LinkedIn resume is okay also creates a source of confusion. For example, if they don't ask if the LinkedIn resume will do, are they implying that a LinkedIn resume _won't do_? Do they need me to open up Word and retype my LinkedIn?
beeskneecaps··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
I don't load images by default. I use Thunderbird, but I know other clients also have this feature. Definitely worth whitelisting domains that you want to allow images from to avoid triggering the recruiter bots!
beeskneecaps··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Ignore recruiter if they:

* are a part of a large firm

* use multiple fonts, sizes, or any color in their emails

* send an email _and_ an InMail

* text or call you

* jokingly or seriously refer to themselves as a stalker

* automatically substitute in your skills or past company name

* ask for your resume when they can obviously download the LinkedIn pdf

* don’t disclose comp

* don’t disclose the company name

* use tracking pixels or redirect links

* send an automated sequence of follow-up emails (4 follow-ups = bot)

Write them back if they seem like a human! “Not interested at this time, but let’s keep in touch. Thanks for your time” should do.

beeskneecaps··on Don't you lecture me with your thirty dollar website
Amazing. Someone needs to add Missile Command or Space Invaders to this.
beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: Hacker claimed ownership and then deleted my Facebook Page of 50k users
I've heard that Facebook doesn't actually hard-delete any information, so odds are that when support gets back to you sometime this year, they'll have admin tools that will allow them to reactivate the group.
beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: What if AI is an existential threat to Google?
How often is gpt3 retrained? While I agree the search engine has new competition, googlebot crawling the web and reindexing Google constantly is the remaining differentiator.

Another aspect where I know gpt3 underperforms is people search. Ask gpt3 about you and it will only reply with the most famous person that has your name.

beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: Share your syntax for txt only
I respect the bit savings. The file extension is needed to kick in the syntax highlighting for markdown. I'll make up for the loss of space by minifying the contents of the todo file.
beeskneecaps··on Ask HN: Share your syntax for txt only
vim ~/todo.md

With a bash alias of “todo”

beeskneecaps··on Reddit files to go public
What is .compact?
beeskneecaps··on Reddit files to go public
old.reddit.com with redditenhancementsuite.com extension is still the best way to browse. I'm impressed that they've kept the old UI for so many years. The usage must be significant to keep it around.
beeskneecaps··on Father builds exoskeleton to help wheelchair-bound son walk
This is incredible! There's something really appealing and enabling about becoming an "exoskeleton pilot".

Noob comment: is there a docker-compose and docker-compose.umm format equivalent for kubernetes or something else that has staying power? Thanks
beeskneecaps··on OfferUp Acquires LetGo (March 2020)
So many scammers on OfferUp. I even see them on the front page. Just scroll through this search: https://offerup.com/search/?q=Urgent

Their site has been like this for over two years. So many people must be getting scammed. Hopefully LetGo has some engineers that know how to deal with fraud.

beeskneecaps··on A User Guide To Working With You
I can see a disgruntled employee leaving negative feedback about having to fill in a form like this. Scheduling regular one on ones and asking these questions during those meetings seems much more casual.
beeskneecaps··on Be lazy, write simple tests in comments – TypeScript
I love this, but can’t imagine it at scale.
beeskneecaps··on How Nextdoor courts police and public officials
Craigslist would not be where I would recommend operating civic functions.
beeskneecaps··on How Nextdoor courts police and public officials
Right that makes sense that you need your name and address to verify. I’m not seeing the part where they sell that. That’s what I meant by “disclosure”. Sorry for the confusion.
beeskneecaps··on How Nextdoor courts police and public officials
This makes sense for your immediate neighbors. It gets trickier to go door to door meeting your neighbors around the entire block for example. Especially during SIP! That’s where you probably want to meet your neighbors online then connect with them later offline.
beeskneecaps··on How Nextdoor courts police and public officials
It is concerning that you’re saying members and your Leads are racist. Hoping you also reported the Leads to Nextdoor.

It’s worth reading the privacy policy: https://legal.nextdoor.com/us-privacy-policy-2020/ Not seeing any PII disclosure.

beeskneecaps··on LICEcap: Simple Animated Screen Captures
This dual monitor capture bug was a pain point. Unhooking the monitor each time I wanted to capture a non-blank gif wore me down.
beeskneecaps··on Facebook Says It Won’t Back Down from Allowing Lies in Political Ads
I agree that their only goal is to maximize profits. I think they’re missing the opportunity to be a unifying force in a highly divided country. Targeted, unmoderated attack ads do not have a positive unifying effect.
beeskneecaps··on Facebook Says It Won’t Back Down from Allowing Lies in Political Ads
Because Facebook knows that it is a problem and instead of taking a stand against the propagation of misinformation, they’re leaning in and exploiting it for profit.
