beerbajay··on Textbook manifesto (2016)
Textbooks which are essentially the same are available in europe for like 1/3 of the price of the american versions. I bought $70 books for my master's courses in Sweden that would have been $300 in the US (where I did my undergrad). The "invisible hand" of capitalism at work!

> that can be interpreted as anti-feminist or has an anti-refugees sentiment

This is a lie.

beerbajay··on In Sweden, Happiness in a Shorter Workday Can’t Overcome the Cost
This headline is terrible. The issue is not the cost; it's political will even by the social democratic party. As it says in the caption of the main image:

> Toyota has been using the shorter workday there for more than a decade.

This is typically lazy American reporting when considering different political systems/paradigms.

Is the source history of these editors saved in the UNIX history GitHub project[1]? Is there significant code overlap or is your diagram more along the lines of inspired-by relationships?

> Stop the hate in the streets.

Go tell that to the people scrawling white power slogans, painting swastikas, putting up signs for "colored" drinking fountains, wearing blackface, calling people "niggers", etc.

> voting freedom is sacred

No, your right to vote is enshrined in the constitution, but you have no right not to be judged a horrible human being for your choice.

beerbajay··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Obamacare is a compromise and it's a compromise required because of the Republican party, there was never enough votes to get real health care legislation. So: not Obama's fault, though it is the fault of the Democratic party letting the Republicans gerrymander themselves to a consistent house majority
beerbajay··on Ask HN: How to become a vegan?
I've been vegan for over 15 years. While a vegan diet is generally more healthy than the standard American diet, there are many healthy (easier) diets than veganism. Basically (imho), veganism is only compelling for ethical reasons.

Eating a vegan diet has however never been easier, especially if you live in a major American city; there is wide availability of reasonable replacement products, vegan options at restaurants, plus a general awareness of what veganism is with less of the reactionary responses that you might have gotten years ago.

How to become vegan? Just start slow; you don't have to do everything at once, learn to replace your standard dishes and ingredients one at a time.

Harder: how to stay vegan? Recognize that you can never be completely sure about ingredients and that trace amounts of animal products don't present any ethical issues. Be willing to eat out and chance some milk or eggs a dish, especially when dining with others. Veganism shouldn't be about making your own life an unlivable burden but about reducing harm.

beerbajay··on The FCC Can't Save Community Broadband, But We Can
In Sweden, when I moved into a new apartment I was able to get fiber broadband from one of EIGHT providers. This was because the fiber network was owned by a corporation created by the city. The result? For $65/mo I could get 500/100 Mbit/s connectivity. On Time-Warner in NYC, $65 only gets me "up to 300 Mbit/s".

In Sweden, I could get symmetric 1 Gbit for $93/mo; I don't even have that option in NYC. Installation? I just connected my computer, chose a plan via my web browser and had everything working within 20 minutes.

You should have asked your coworkers why your access was revoked. Of course, they probably should have communicated the reason in advance.

beerbajay··on Swedes uncover Disqus user security breach
> "The research group" is an extremist left-wing group

> Sweden Democrats is not at all far-right, it is more like a conservative social party

Hmm, where's the bias here, I wonder...

The Swedish Democrats are basically a cleaned-up racist-nationalist party. They had to explicitly ban members from wearing nazi uniforms. Did a green party ever have that problem? Everyone else knows that they're just playing at dog-whistle politics. "concerned about immigration" obviously means "keep out brown people, get rid of as many as possible who are already here".

> mainstream media which is most likely the worst in the world when it comes to being objective

This is just hilarious. You've clearly never read the washington post or watched just about any american news tv.

> Sure maybe some were technically writing racists comments online,

> This is also old news in Sweden.

This is as least true. It's from 2013

Nexus Mod Manager is impressively bad. The interface is insanely laggy; select a mod, wait a second, list starts to refresh, wait a second, list finishes refreshing, wait a second, the mod info shows up. It's really easy to do things by mistake because of the lagginess (and probably just generally poor quality of programming). It has multithreaded downloads, but even these are messed up. Every time I tried them about 50% of the downloads got corrupted.

beerbajay··on Two Weeks of Rust
I agree that whitespace scope delimiting is a bad idea, but I was thinking more about general syntactical clarity. Just because C++ uses every possible typographical symbol doesn't mean rust should. Simple example which had me WTFing:

    use std::collections::{HashMap, HashSet};
Are all those ::s and {}s adding to clarity?

Why are there no easy to use initializers for maps? It's 2015! I have to do:

    let mut map = ::std::collections::HashMap::new();
    map.insert("a".to_string(), "b".to_string());
    ...
or some such nonsense. Oh, right, I have to write a macro and basically learn another language. Also, using the macro system for basic things like println just seems bonkers to me; use macros when you really, really need to do something special, not everywhere.
beerbajay··on Two Weeks of Rust
I also tried rust for a couple of weeks, but holy hell is it ugly. Why improve on c++ and not improve the syntax or containers? It's like python never existed.
beerbajay··on Study: US is an oligarchy, not a democracy (2014)
It is systems that allow for bad results. Blaming the individual is silly. If people are ignorant, there is a system keeping them so.
beerbajay··on Regular Expression Crossword Puzzle
I wrote my master's thesis in Constraint Programming. The textbook for my CP course was Apt's "Principles of Constraint Programming"[1], but I have to admit to barely using it. Most of the books and "introductions" to CP which I've read have been lacking in either rigor or clarity; many important details are glossed over, partly I think, because of CP's development from other kinds of optimization/satisfaction programming. When learning, I mostly used lecture notes from Christian Schulte (from KTH in Sweden) and Pierre Flener (from Uppsala University, also in Sweden). I can unfortunately not find these accessible online at the moment.

beerbajay··on Regular Expression Crossword Puzzle
I solved this a while back. It's a bit challenging, but mostly due to the fact that the clues aren't really completely determining the solution, so you can't deduce each square like you can in e.g. sudoku. You have to make some guesses and then backtrack if they're wrong.

beerbajay··on Schwarzenegger: I don’t give a damn if we agree about climate change
I think you're ignoring the profit to be made in extending the time between now and when ANY kind of regulation (pollution OR climate change) kicks in. Industries have historically avoided responsibility for various kinds of pollution by using the same FUD tactics that are used in the climate change "debate".
