beebmam··on Sam Altman Slams Meta’s AI Talent Poaching: 'Missionaries Will Beat Mercenaries'
A company's mission is not an individual's mission. I personally would never hire an engineer whose main pursuit is money or promotions. These are the laziest engineers that exist and are always a liability.
beebmam··on How I Program with Agents
Thanks for this comment, i totally agree. Not to say this article isnt good; its great!
beebmam··on I live my life a quarter century at a time
I hope more people read comments like these and ask themselves: "What warrants these life suggestions? Are they justified? What would make them justified? What alternatives are there?"
beebmam··on Tokyo is set to introduce a four-day workweek for government employees
> It's actually that life is too good for childless people

I'm not going to idly sit by and let people who have children take my hard earned money from me. If you think increasing taxes on those without children won't cause a massive retaliation by the men who are not able to find female mates to have children with, you are in for a massive surprise.

beebmam··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
Regardless of these fields being separate departments/job titles: people are not getting promoted for doing QA, release engineering, continuing engineering, or DBA work. It's a huge cultural problem in tech.
beebmam··on Spending 3 months investigating a 7-year old bug and fixing it in 1 line of code
why is this not considered a compiler optimization and/or language problem? it seems to me that compiler optimizations for expressive programming languages should be able to handle something like this
beebmam··on Nvidia Warp: A Python framework for high performance GPU simulation and graphics
Why Python? I really don't understand this choice of language other than accessibility.
beebmam··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
The US is in a cold war with China as long as China is open to the idea of the use of military force on its neighbors, including Taiwan. A cold war is the only alternative to surrendering the free Taiwanese people to communist rule, and a hot war.
beebmam··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
How do you know that writing has improved the way that you think? By what metrics did you come to that conclusion? If someone else showed you that by writing their transformed thinking reduced their quality of life, would you be less prescriptive to others?
beebmam··on Martin Scorsese's secret life as an obsessive VHS archivist
He should have donated these to the Victorville Film Archive, which exists specifically to archive and care for VHS recordings
beebmam··on Breaking down tasks
I'm jealous that you have such flexibility at work that you can do POCs behind closed doors!
beebmam··on Google confirmed it 'terminated' an employee who staged a protest against Israel
> In the United States there is no way to make effective protests, you are immediately detained by the police

Pure fiction. I've been protesting for decades and have not once been arrested or detained by police.

beebmam··on Association between cannabis use and subjective cognitive decline
I go with 4 for basically any study until it is verified independently. One big reason I tend to avoid science "news"
beebmam··on Nvidia is now more valuable than Amazon and Google
It seems deeply overvalued to me, as it's pretty likely that NVIDIA's competitors will have parallel computation hardware that competes well enough. I'm personally not a fan of NVIDIA's drivers or the reliability of their hardware.
beebmam··on The Empire Strikes Back First Draft by Leigh Brackett (1978) [pdf]
I love that the Star Wars Holiday Special was probably written before this, making it even more canon than what The Empire Strikes Back eventually became.
beebmam··on Renting your music means accepting that it will disappear
I think we all have to face the reality that much of the content we love could disappear tomorrow. Many of my favorite videos and music tracks, almost entirely made by independent no-name artists, have disappeared over the last 2 decades from the internet, either due to link/content rot or artists that wanted their content to disappear. It is deeply sad to me, but I've learned to accept it and move on.

Archival tools are great for preventing link/content rot, but it feels disrespectful to use them for people who want their content deleted. Should we strive to always try to do the right thing? What do you think?

beebmam··on Could inflammation be the cause of myriad chronic conditions? (2019)
What evidence does he present for this claim?
beebmam··on Signs that it's time to leave a company
The levelling system is a joke everywhere. HR needs to be totally annihilated
beebmam··on No new iPhone? No secure iOS: Looking at an unfixed iOS vulnerability
Never forget the Pixel Pass rug pull. I'll never buy another Google product.
beebmam··on Will scaling work?
> leaves human societies more or less the same

My mom, who is 70 years old, regularly tells me how profoundly transformative the internet has been for society.

beebmam··on Make Apps for Linux
The CLI is peak UX for anyone technically competent.
beebmam··on 'Greedflation' study finds many companies were lying to you about inflation
Plenty of goods with substitutes (ex: fast food items) have increased substantially in price since the pandemic. People are more than willing to pay historically higher prices for plenty of items that could be replaced with cheaper items.

If people are willing to pay these prices, why should companies not be raising their prices?

There has been an enormous increase in net worth of all age brackets in the US in the last few years (as of 2022 data[1]), all data points adjusted for inflation. I think this is enough to explain why consumers are paying for these items.

Feel free to experiment with this graph tool from the US Federal Reserve's website and please respond if you have any other explanations:

beebmam··on You are never taught how to build quality software
I think that "quality software" is not well defined, so until it's well defined, we're not talking about the same thing.
beebmam··on The wealth of the 25 richest families in the world soared 43% in the last year
Income isn't wealth. Please don't conflate the two.
beebmam··on Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards
I nominate Talos Principle 2
beebmam··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
I'm happy with my Lynx/w3m browsers.
beebmam··on PostgreSQL on S390x
I'm fairly certain IBM Cloud offers S390x as a platform for confidential computing, so there is a very good use case for this.
beebmam··on Our structure
Microsoft's market cap was ~3T in late 2021, long before ChatGPT/GPT-4 was even announced.
beebmam··on Microsoft was blindsided by OpenAI's ouster of CEO Sam Altman
Eventually being maybe 5+ years to build out the cloud tech to do so. The reason GPT-4 succeeded is massive RDMA+GPU compute clusters for training the model.
beebmam··on Amazon will cut 'several hundred' Alexa jobs as it ends unspecified initiatives
The people from other countries who are genuine hackers aren't qualified enough to get approved for H-1B visas.
