beatpanda··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
"Something bad happened to my friend" =/= "Things are getting worse". I've been jumped walking down the street in SF, and also violent crime has been steadily decreasing since I moved here, just as it is now.
beatpanda··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
It literally is not. I live and work in and around SF, I have worked directly with the homeless, and I pay attention when new data comes out on this subject. You are 100% wrong about this.
beatpanda··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
NIMBYs in San Francisco scream bloody murder and call it "violence" when developers want to build on empty parking lots. I am not exaggerating. The idea that "geography" is the limiting factor here is willful ignorance.

Can you name one person who was fired for "conservative views on business affairs", please?

beatpanda··on Cafeteria workers at Facebook struggle to make ends meet
Tech workers from lots of different companies are organizing to get better working conditions for cafeteria workers and other service workers like them. See: http://brokeassstuart.com/blog/2017/06/27/the-tech-workers-h...
beatpanda··on Uber loses ground in US as rival Lyft accelerates
Converesly, most of the people I know say "get a Lyft" and mean Lyft. I don't really think this is universal.
beatpanda··on Antarctica Is Melting, and Giant Ice Cracks Are Just the Start
Yes they are. People keep conflating the ability of commercial bee keepers to keep up with colony collapse with the ability of wild bee populations to survive. They are not the same thing.

I don't know about the Netherlands specifically but iirc neonicotinoid pesticides are banned throughout the EU. Maybe wild bees are doing better there. But overall things are not getting better.

beatpanda··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
Groupthink and investor pressure
beatpanda··on Pirate Joe’s, Maverick Distributor of Trader Joe’s Products, Shuts Down
>>For one trip, he hired a couple who he said did not look like conventional Trader Joe’s shoppers. They had dreadlocks, tattoos and piercings. “They looked like they just walked off the set of a Burning Man documentary,” he said.

I'm sorry? Trader Joes, in at least 4 locations I've seen in California, does special signs and displays the week before Burning Man to market to Burners. Where is this writer from?

beatpanda··on Coffee from California
I buy shirts that are made in San Francisco, but the fabric is almost certainly not made in the U.S. The global supply chain enables products that are in some sense "made locally". Same goes for coffee. So it's totally reasonable to be against protectionism and for buying "locally".
beatpanda··on A Map of San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley Gang Territories
There are a lot of these maps, most of them generated by Google MyMaps, by gang members themselves.
beatpanda··on Self-Driving Electric Cars Will Dominate Roads by 2030
Remember that time when a well-funded, highly competent state actor stockpiled vulnerabilities when everyone told them not to and the leaked vulnerabilities nearly brought down an entire national health care system?
beatpanda··on Lyft and Waymo Reach Deal to Collaborate on Self-Driving Cars
Didn't Lyft also do basically the same thing in China? I feel like Lyft is a living testament to collaboration being a better business strategy than domination
beatpanda··on Penguicon has lost its way
> trumpeting unisex bathrooms is taking a side, implying a public normative claim

Yeah, or, it's just making trans people comfortable at the conference in a way that impedes absolutely nobody from doing anything, other than shouting at someone for using the 'wrong' bathroom.

Why does this make people so itchy?

beatpanda··on TV May Die Soon
There's a huge opportunity for the attentive. Rock and roll got started largely because the major broadcasters moved away from radio and into television, and as a result operating an FM radio station got crazy cheap, leaving lots of room for experimentation. I have had my fingers crossed for years that the same thing is going to happen to terrestrial TV.
beatpanda··on San Fran is so expensive, some tech companies can't convince employees to move
I prefer "The Big Fran" myself
beatpanda··on California’s public pensions are breaking the bank
Did the state, or any city, declare bankruptcy?
beatpanda··on California’s public pensions are breaking the bank
Why is there any category of worker that you feel doesn't deserve the right to collective bargaining? Why should any group of workers be prevented from organizing for rights and benefits as a group?
beatpanda··on California’s public pensions are breaking the bank
While we're on the subject of misleading language, let's talk about why this is always labeled as "pension reform" and not what it actually is, "reducing payments", or even better, "reneging on a contract."

I don't understand why it's controversial that California (or any other state) should be legally obligated to pay the pensions they promised to workers. People make long-term decisions based on those promised benefits, and pulling the rug out from under them is unconscionable. And, luckily, in California at least, illegal.

beatpanda··on Not a Dot-Com Bubble, Not 2007, but a Nasty Mix of Both
I think you're probably dead on. How do I bet on this?
beatpanda··on Everything Is Broken (2014)
In the future it's going to blow people's minds that software engineers were ever allowed to work on systems that touch people's personal information without a license.
beatpanda··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
I don't understand how Philadelphia gets away with being such a wonderful city. It's an incredible anomoly.
beatpanda··on Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook
You're making a mistake assuming that I'm using rhetoric to win elections or build a base.

I actually believe, because there is ample evidence to support it, that this administration's goal is ethnic cleansing via mass deportations, immigration controls, and mass incarceration.

I believe anybody who is ignoring this evidence, and anybody who is able to compartmentalize the grave, mortal danger that members of targeted minority groups now find themselves in as "just politics", actually does not consider those targeted minority groups as fully human.

For whatever reason, you think that's so extreme that I couldn't possibly actually believe it. But I'm being really straightforward. That's what I believe. There's ample evidence to back up those beliefs. I don't care if I alienate some people by saying what I believe is true.

Trump's mass deportation machine is ramping up now. I and thousands of others have trained to intervene directly in deportations, and those networks have already been mobilized to prevent people from being kidnapped from their own homes. That's the base I'm interested in building. And conveying anything less than the full scale of the terror that targeted minority groups are facing, or asking for anything less than the assistance they are calling for, is a mistake.

beatpanda··on UK researchers create graphene-based sieve that can remove salt from seawater
Yes, it is. My understanding is that there are still barriers to producing enough graphene at a large enough scale to make many of its uses commercially viable.

beatpanda··on Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook
No, you're right, the fact that Donald Trump literally launched his campaign by painting all Mexican immigrants as murderers and rapists is a coincidence, the question of who gets deported and why is purely a technical, legal one having nothing to do with ethnicity
beatpanda··on A startup is filling SF's empty luxury rentals
Also, I'd love to hear more about how building a high rise on what used to be a parking lot involves "kicking people out of stable living situations"
beatpanda··on A startup is filling SF's empty luxury rentals
This is that exact process in action. It is happening exactly as proponents of new construction suggested it would. This is all good news.
