Hug of death I think.

Gave me a good and convincing first couple of tries. Good work.

beardyw··on Apple Joins Google in Renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America"
A point I have been trying to get across. There are too many examples to list of places with differing names. But renaming due to politics often has a history of being temporary.
beardyw··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
Since fascists are political extremists that seems a bit circular.
beardyw··on Study reveals substantial misdirection in EU automotive regulation
> Not sure if it's a translation issue

Thanks, the word 'misdirection' puzzled me.

Misdirection: is the act of distracting people or drawing their attention away from a true purpose, intent, or action.

beardyw··on The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes, so what's left?
This assumes the USA should be at war with Iran. I think Trump feels duped, and wants to get things back to some sort of stability as soon as he can.

He really doesn't want a ground war.

I think the AI companies are to blame by drumming up a feeding frenzy (for money) rather than acknowledging they are "next word guessing machines".

beardyw··on Google Maps renames "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" faster than US Government
Thanks for the link.

Going through those, it looks as if only about 50% stuck, mostly from World War II, so here's hoping. I'm not sure if using the name is in any way enforced?

beardyw··on Google Maps renames "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" faster than US Government
You can make too much of this. Countries regularly have different names for foreign or shared places. The "English Channel" is "La Manche", Cologne is Köln. Like the English language, it's pretty much down to "that's what I call it". If people continue to call it "Lake Ontario" that's what it will be.

beardyw··on 1Password Supports the Ethnic Cleansing of Europe
> Expelling people who have no particular attachment or roots to a given land is not ethnic cleansing.

If you are going to expel people you need more than hand wavy definitions like this. Or does it just come down to "people who are not like us"?

beardyw··on Local AI Is Dead. You Are at the Funeral
Why have personal computers when there are mainframes? Why have TV when you can go to the cinema? I'm glad the author acknowledges their bias.
beardyw··on Droptick – one ad slot per week, the price only falls
I think you are making it too complex. Show the price constantly, falling at a constant rate. If you get some traction take it from there.
beardyw··on State of the Map 2026
If you follow the link there are dictionary entries. It's not stupidity, it's completely reasonable. Amerigo Vespucci didn't name the USA, he named the entire continent.

"Britain" is widely used to refer to the UK, but Great Britain is the physical land mass which excludes Northern Ireland, so there is rarely confusion.

beardyw··on State of the Map 2026
Refering to the whole as America is a thing. Perhaps not in America (whatever that means).

Mbox is text, so it is searchable with something which takes a huge file. Not sure you will find client type formatting as standalone option. I use Thunderbird which is at least local.

No AI - how can that possibly work?
beardyw··on State of the Map 2026
Here in the UK it still says Ontario.

Interesting that he changed the name to that of the entire continent, so Mexicans and Venezuelans can feel part of it.

beardyw··on Why did the CIA chief go to Moscow? We have to assume the worst-case scenario
Yes, the USA has never been asked for support under the NATO agreement, though they did themselves call on support after 9/11 (and Trump did imagine he might get support in Iran which definitely doesn't qualify).

I suspect they would not want to be put in the position of supporting a European nation against Russia.

In fact my reading of Trump is that warfare is not really his cup of tea, making Iran a big shock to me.
