beardedman··on Police raid Worldcoin warehouse in Nairobi
Yea, it was a rhetorical question.
beardedman··on Police raid Worldcoin warehouse in Nairobi
> the global south

Care to elaborate what you mean by "the global south"?

EDIT: Downvoted for asking a question? Did all the StackOverflow mods come to HN?

beardedman··on Backend of Meta Threads is built with Python 3.10
So glad we're condensing entire tech stacks down to a language now.
beardedman··on Beautifying our UI: Giving Gitlab build features a fresh look
Appreciate the comment, but just genuinely curious. You guys seem to be clamping down on freemium, but not really landing any valuable "hooks" (product-wise). Would something like a better overall project management experience not be more urgent than a command pallete? Not to be nitpicky, but GH now has a scheduler component on top of custom fields - not amazing, but adds a ton of flexibility.
beardedman··on Beautifying our UI: Giving Gitlab build features a fresh look
I would love to know how dev resources are being spent there. Feels like every blog article these days is touting some small enhancement as some big feature. Meanwhile GitHub is pushing out actual new features.
beardedman··on Iceland long term visa for remote workers
...long term visa for high earning remote workers...
beardedman··on The End of Front-End Development
ChatGPT has way more of a probability to hit the singularity first, thus rendering all coding efforts futile & useless, whilst it ushers in the machine apocalypse. So write that FE framework before you get taken away and used as a bio-battery for the great machine king.
beardedman··on South Korea has the lowest fertility rate, which has lessons for us all
Pretty good point actually.
beardedman··on South Korea has the lowest fertility rate, which has lessons for us all
To have more sex?

EDIT: My god, it was a joke.

beardedman··on Haraldur Thorleifsson's Personal Site
The guy sure knows how to toot his own horn.
beardedman··on For longevity, muscle strength may be as important as aerobic exercise
I guess my question here is: what exercise/s are you referring to with "majority of our aerobic exercise"?
beardedman··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
Sadly I fall in the "scientific experiments" group! :) I don't think my wife even needs to floss.
beardedman··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
FWIW, many years ago I used to have a real problem with bleeding gums whenever I brushed my teeth (mainly around my molars). Flossing daily solved that completely.
beardedman··on IBM to cut about 3,900 workers while still hiring in ‘higher growth’ areas
Sure we're going to have a "CEO should take responsibility" comment pretty soon.
beardedman··on Prisma laying off 28% staff
> In some ways we’re all consultants

Surprisingly true!

beardedman··on Prisma laying off 28% staff
I haven't made any comment on the manner, nor assumed that those "HN'ers" were the ones layed off (which I think is a bit of a stretch anyways). I'm only commenting that whenever one of these "x company lays off x people" posts get made, you have this pitchfork-party effect happening.

EDIT: added missing words

beardedman··on Prisma laying off 28% staff
I'd be interested to know the age (or any other) demographic of HN'ers commenting on posts like these. Lot of people sounding very personally slighted by companies trying to remain profitable (or just in business).
beardedman··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
The lack of objectivity around this is absolutely astonishing from a community such as this.

It exploded with complexity because frontend complexity exploded. Simple. Absolutely no people expected an "API call" from a frontend application 20 years ago, now people expect loading indicators on buttons (that make API calls) after pressing them.

Just have a look at the comments on the recent Standard Notes / React Native post. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34197613

beardedman··on Instagram is threatening legal action against Pixelfed
Read my original post.

> copying actual IP.

This is exactly the problem they're facing.

PS; labels & text are part of the UI.

beardedman··on Instagram is threatening legal action against Pixelfed
It's really not.
beardedman··on Instagram is threatening legal action against Pixelfed
People in this thread seem to be confusing copying an idea vs. copying actual IP.

There is nothing stopping anyone from creating a TikTok clone, but there sure as hell are laws stopping anyone from directly ripping the UI (which Pixelfed did in this case).

beardedman··on Novu – Service for managing multi-channel notifications with a single API
+1 for me. Would also like to know this.
beardedman··on Why hundreds of thousands of kids in the US dread their 21st birthdays
As someone who is moving away from a northern European welfare state next year; so long and thanks for all the fish.
beardedman··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
ROFL!!
beardedman··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
You're completely missing the point I'm making.

Other countries aren't exempt, but other countries also don't write case studies on how everyone else should operate.

It's absolutely baffling to me that Germany touts a more secure messenger, but can't get card payments working seamlessly / consistently. To your point, I was visiting there earlier this year & card payments were completely offline for 2 - 3 days.

But sure, roll out a more secure messenger.

beardedman··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
I am not a young person anymore & card payments have almost never failed for me (unless it was for a specific/resolvable reason).

> A few month ago, card terminals of a widely used type failed hard in Germany, only cash payment was possible.

This exactly is part of my point.

> or my medical provider is entirely orthogonal to that.

I prefer a medical provider that does a good job & shares my data, rather than incompetent medical staff that adhere to privacy policies. I expect my doctor to be a good doctor, not a good data policy keeper.

beardedman··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
Another virtue signal from good 'ol Deutschland. Where 75% of the population prefer cash.

"Do what we say, just don't do what we do", as the old adage goes. How painful.

beardedman··on The five-year engineering feat Germany pulled off in months
Your perceptions were off. They have excellent engineering culture, which has bolstered every part of the economy & allowed them to perform poorly almost everywhere else IMO.
beardedman··on 83% of Developers Suffer from Burnout, Haystack Analytics Study Finds
Doing so very effectively it seems. :)
beardedman··on 83% of Developers Suffer from Burnout, Haystack Analytics Study Finds
I am sceptical that burnout has become very en vogue.

I also think this why immigrants are eating locals' breakfast (so to speak). I do a lot of hiring & (very anecdotally of course) burnout is almost exclusively a topic of developed countries' software engineers. So much so, that I don't like hiring them (DACH region/Austria/Germany lately). And yes; I believe work life balance is important.
