bear141··on Google does not want rights to things you do using Chrome (2008)
In my mind it’s more like they give you what they want you to accept in these results and the AI summaries. It really seems like the days where any of these giant corps gave you what you actually wanted are long past.
bear141··on After 20 years, math couple solves major group theory problem
This is a great point. If a small percentage of the population is openly and aggressively negative towards another part of the population, it makes sense that they would both artificially appear as if they are a larger part of the population, to each other. I think it goes both ways.
bear141··on Helix: A vision-language-action model for generalist humanoid control
This along with the writing style in the description is totally forced anthropomorphizing. It’s creepy.
bear141··on Helix: A Vision-Language-Action Model for Generalist Humanoid Control
Maybe some people just assume there is a “best” or “optimal” way to do everything and AI will tell us what that is. Some things are just preference and I don’t mind the tiny amount of energy that goes into doing small things the way I like.
bear141··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
Requiring people who get government money for food to not use it on prepared food is a good thing I would think. Technicalities like the one you presented do seem ridiculous on their own however.
bear141··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
I know several people working as customer engineers in a fab based in America. They are very much not PhD‘s or even mechanical engineers.

They are each assigned one tool to maintain as you said. They each make around 100K and 3 12hr days per week.

They were working in the automotive industry before these jobs. Sounds pretty damn good to me, but I suppose that’s one reason American companies cannot compete with TSMC.

bear141··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
To me it feels like society is finally moving on from this insane over emphasis on finding things to be offended by and identity culture bs. I’m really hoping it peaked in the lockdown when people really had nothing better to do.
bear141··on Portland airport grows with expansive mass timber roof canopy
There is a Delta direct to Amsterdam just because of Nike and Adidas.
bear141··on Teen behind hundreds of swatting attacks pleads guilty to federal charges
I live in America and while I have compassion for some individual cops, I hate them as a whole with a burning passion. I know lots of people that feel this way. It’s almost like social media comments sections are not an accurate representation of a population or something.
bear141··on FTC's rule banning fake online reviews goes into effect
Not debating the practicality here, but even if you need your truck to do something only once in the entirety of your ownership, it needs to be capable of this all the time. Towing, crawling, etc.
bear141··on Weird Nonfiction
He also mentions “creative nonfiction”.
bear141··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
Ray-ban along with almost every other glasses and sunglasses brand, and also almost all retailers of glasses are all owned by a megacorp called Luxxotica. The prices are all completely arbitrary and fixed.

Beyond this basically all prices for every consumer item are completely arbitrary. They almost never reflect real value and almost always are priced based on what people are willing to pay. Act accordingly.

bear141··on The Remarkable Life of Ibelin
Despite the obvious name, I find no reason not to engage in the custom of appointing a god parent despite the lack of belief in any of the gods.
bear141··on Meta Movie Gen
This basic concept can be applied in many places. Do you ever wonder why social movements seem to never work out well and demands are never met? That’s because when they do work out, and demands are met, those people quickly become the “oppressor” or the powerful class from which others are fighting to receive more rights or money.

All criminals seem so incredibly stupid that you can’t understand why anyone would ever try since they all are caught? The smart ones don’t get caught and no one ever hears about them.

bear141··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
I am intrigued by this Cops Daughter video. Do you have a link?
bear141··on In the Beginning Was the Command Line (1999)
Just using at a barely advanced level for 20 years or so as I do, the other comment was correct in that it is the changes that have seemingly been made to make it more familiar to iOS users and “idiot proof”.

Mainly slowly hiding buttons and options and menus that used to be easily accessible, now require holding function or re-enabling in settings or using terminal to bring them back.

bear141··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
Wow. This hurts.
bear141··on A ‘plague’ comes before the fall: lessons from Roman history
This would obviously be terrible, but are there any long term consequences from this that wouldn't be positive?
bear141··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
While a lot of this can definitely sound like an old man yelling at the sky, tv compared to scrolling tiktok, is like caffeine compared to crack cocaine.
bear141··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
“Think of the children!!!” Has been used for a very very long time to enact terrible laws and quietly remove rights. It is everywhere you look.
bear141··on Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market
Cloning is very easy.
bear141··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
Yeah it seems like people are assuming the person engaging with the floor would be kept completely stationary. It seems to me if the floor were covering a larger area and therefore required less manipulation to keep you stationary then it could use minimal inputs to keep you within the borders and still allow your inner ear to receive most of the inertial inputs required to feel realistic.
bear141··on Disney unveils the HoloTile floor
I also found the close up video to be self explanatory but I understand the confusion. People are thinking of it as multiple tiny treadmills that change direction rather than the spinning disc it actually is.
bear141··on Woman with rectifier and electric car (1912)
This is the tech that most Asian motorcycle manufacturers have recently agreed upon for interchangeable batteries without charging wait times.
bear141··on The Star – Arthur C. Clarke (1967) [pdf]
Thank you for your vigilance, Hall Monitor.
bear141··on The Star – Arthur C. Clarke (1967) [pdf]
Coincidences exist. Coincidences are real. Saying that there are no coincidences stops inquiry. Challenging the statement forces us to make sense of its ambiguity and explore our potential involvement. You can choose the random perspective and with a wave of a mental hand, dismiss most coincidences as not worth further attention. Or, you can seek out their possible personal implications and make life into an adventure of discovery both about yourself and the world around you. As you explore, you may uncover the latent abilities hidden within you.
bear141··on [dead]
I have a mechanical background in automotive specifically so I don’t expect too much technical detail in an article like this, but saying the “wheel fell off” and “suspension collapsed” is like saying the computer “blew up”. The writer could have done a tiny bit more research to accurately describe the problem.
bear141··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
There are alternatives. Privacy based software and hardware. But the inconveniences that come with it are not insignificant.

I plan on moving in that direction at some point, but for now I’m not ready.

bear141··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
Thank you that one looks great
bear141··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
Thank you for this. I realize this suggestion fits the context of the thread, but I am currently self employed so I would love another suggestion that isn’t necessarily geared toward integrating with employer match programs.
