beaeglebeach··on How much land does a man need? (1886)
As an ancap you're the first to ever accuse me of this, and my mere ability to view outcomes from perspective of others is in no way the claim you've accused me of making.

I have no problem with skyscraper. I'm for the abolition of taxes, which are in practice a massive transfer of wealth from poorer to richer. LVT is a transfer of tax balance from those unable to improve their land, to the rich who can. LVT accelerates this balance towards the skyscraper landlord-baron.

I'm sure the fact the government suddenly was interested in a guy who made his investors gobs of money, none of whom approached as victims (although did testify they would invest again) was absolutely totally unrelated to the fact they prosecuted him in close chronology to the price debacle.

When the state finds it's target, they're not bothered they find an unrelated technicality to really punish something else. What they clearly were actually punishing was legal behavior raising price.

beaeglebeach··on Average distance to a supermarket in Amsterdam is 400 meter or 1300 feet
This describes to a T my experience. The insane hassle of packing up a temperamental 1 or 2 year old, who will probably spend half the time screeching while everyone gives you nasty glares, and their bag of goodies to go anywhere really kills the desire to do anything but a megabulk run in a bulky McAmerican car every couple weeks.
beaeglebeach··on Average distance to a supermarket in Amsterdam is 400 meter or 1300 feet
For dry goods I don't even look at total price, I look at price per weight (wet goods, same but volume). It's almost always lower the more I buy. I'll buy the largest quantity I can consume before it spoils.

Off the cuff I'd say I save about 20%, and buy a few hundred pounds per trip. Probably saves us amongst a family in the vicinity of $1000/yr. This same concept extended to all other non-food consumables.

The elevation in price is less location and more whether you're able to buy in bulk. With careful rotation discipline and a handcart it's achievable on foot though, although clearly more convenient with a car and a nice wide lot.

The real question is not whether they are a problem but why such wildly inefficient systems exist, and the answer is likely a factor in the desperation.

The LVT was relaxed in Vancouver in part because of the grandparent noted concerns of the democratic vote of the average joe in small non-profit-seeking property holdings that can't bear the (functionally regressive) tax the same as the ibanker overlords squeezing a skyscraper of tenants in faux-luxury studios dry.

I've always found it interesting HN is so focused on Georgism given it's leanings. It works out fine for hyper capitalists who eek out highly efficient use of land for stuff like a steel mill but is arguably devastating to the average joe who uses it for economically unprofitable uses like a place to let his toddler or dog play.

Property tax is definitely more preferable to the prol and even programmer wage slave, who can eek out low taxes on a larger leisure plot by not improving it and won't be forced to drill for oil or something to pay the George tax like it held a higher averaged common value.

In many senses property tax is progressivism while Georgism land tax is a hyper capitalist steamroller that cares not you've barely been able to improve the land with a decrepit mobile home and meanwhile taxes the baron with the gold plated loan shark palace the same.

beaeglebeach··on White House warns it might break patents of high-priced drugs
There is nothing free market about enforcing patent on parties that aren't signatory to it, nor the high regulatory impositions that choke out those who aren't suitably connected to regulatory capture apparatus.
beaeglebeach··on White House warns it might break patents of high-priced drugs
58% were funded in some fraction. I wonder what percent of approved drug cost is publically funded, and what percent is fulfilling regulatory requirements. The high cost is in large part government induced, so it's kind of hilarious to regulate this massive cost and then brag about helping to fund some fractional number.
beaeglebeach··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
Capital punishment for people who strike using the post office?
beaeglebeach··on White House warns it might break patents of high-priced drugs
This is a much better plan than their prior plan of pursuing parallel frivelous felony charges against the players of the game who legally raise prices (Shkreli).
beaeglebeach··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
This should be allowed from time to time so the prols can see what a spectacularly bad idea this is and taste the fruit of their impoverished ideologies.
beaeglebeach··on Serbia grants citizenship to Steve Wozniak
There is another despot that does it, Eritrea

US also imposes an unrivaled insane extraterritorial law (FATCA) on foreign banks requiring them to do expensive reporting on US persons, making them worldwide pariahs in the banking system even when they hold dual citizenship.

beaeglebeach··on Bitcoin tops $44,000 since April 2022 as ETF optimism grows
With an ETF who cares about price. Buy BTC onto cold wallets, short the ETF, and you can't lose more in dollars than the cost of shorting plus risk of losing wallet .

The major issue with BTC before was you could only hedge in the same gambler shitholes that would go bust as soon as BTC did, making the hedge useless.

The relevance is neither the historical basis nor text restricts 2A to small arms, so why are we restricting the conversation to precisely their effectiveness?

>>...2A...

> But small arms in the context of modern government technological authoritarianism amounts to little more than a security blanket ...

beaeglebeach··on UK porn watchers could have faces scanned
Basically every able bodied citizen male is in the 'unorganized militia' anyway per US code.
beaeglebeach··on UK porn watchers could have faces scanned
2A arguably protects anything from steak knives to nukes, despite what tyrants in power say.

People owned warships, cannons, etc privately at that time it was written. If people shouldn't have arms such as nukes or f-15 and 'scaled up weapons' the 2A should be amended to exclude some arms.

beaeglebeach··on Minnesota middle school students 'seem happy' after cellphone ban
The responsibilities and duties one has to their child vs an adult are quite different. Virtually every authority charged with last-resort solving interpersonal conflict issues (government) uses violence, as when all else fails some at least respond to that.

The reason why corporal punishment isn't used privately man to man is because we've delegated that to government, who happily sends men with guns to drag people violently in for reform. Spanking a child before they get to that point would be a favor.

beaeglebeach··on Minnesota middle school students 'seem happy' after cellphone ban
Children are often hardest on their own caregivers though, so the more you look like a parent figure the more they rebel. Of course nowadays corporal punishment is 'child abuse' so the child is emboldened knowing they can do whatever they like, including violence, with absolute impunity from physical pain.
beaeglebeach··on Investors snagged 1 in 5 homes for sale in Boston area, worsening housing crisis
This is easily obtainable without zoning by buying in a subdivision with CC&Rs excluding industry.
beaeglebeach··on Investors snagged 1 in 5 homes for sale in Boston area, worsening housing crisis
My community voted we would rather risk we all die in a fire than be homeless. My county is poor and people do their own work.

I live here specifically to get away from people with your concerns.

beaeglebeach··on Investors snagged 1 in 5 homes for sale in Boston area, worsening housing crisis
Cool, I am building to code but I never could have built to code if it were required, because I have a day job and no time for inspections. So I built without code inspections.

My experience is I know far more of the code than average volunteer firefighter who has probably never even looked at them, although perhaps not you.

beaeglebeach··on Investors snagged 1 in 5 homes for sale in Boston area, worsening housing crisis
I am mixing one 60 pound concrete bag at a time from the ground up to avoid this insanity from all sides. Fuck the investors, fuck the homeowners, fuck the landlords, fuck the general contractors, and fuck the legislators who pass zoning and codes.
beaeglebeach··on 'Drug use is a health problem': inside one of the oldest legal consumption rooms
There are some "right wing" ideologies that basically align with non-interventionist decriminalization: don't fuck with me I won't fuck with you sort of individualistic thinking. Using violence such as taxation to solve it has parallels in some minds to the druggy coming up and robbing you. They don't want either, just the option to defend theyself or possibly engage in voluntary charity/assistance.
beaeglebeach··on 'Drug use is a health problem': inside one of the oldest legal consumption rooms
Drug use is primarily a problem of physics, and education on its effects. They feel great to the human brain, initially, for many drugs. And they can harm you too. Recognize nothing the government does will stop them, not even executing drug dealers nor decriminalization. Pandora's box is unleashed.
beaeglebeach··on Billionaires amass more through inheritance than wealth creation, says UBS
Life expectancy rose to a multi decade (all time at that time?) record peak during the great depression in US and starvation was exceedingly rare. Even at one of its worst the outcome was remarkably robust against starvation.
beaeglebeach··on Billionaires amass more through inheritance than wealth creation, says UBS
Good luck with that in USA.

I'd rather die some billionaires minimum wage security squad protecting his gold plated yacht than let some violent freeloaders take my shit and install some cuban-tier communist hell-hole where there's no incentive to produce even basic grain stocks.

beaeglebeach··on The Drums of War Are Growing Louder in South America
But the schomburgk line author stated it wasn't intended to include legitimate territory. This is reflected for instance on Google maps not showing a solid border. The line was a rough survey with an explicit agreement between Britain and Venezuela that didn't establish territorial borders and agreed to not colonize vicinity of either side.

To this day the area disputed is largely lawless jungle with no agreed territorial line. It is very much a modern question due to this loosely defined state.
