bdr··on NoDesign.dev – Tools and resources for non-artistic developers
It's expensive as far as books go, but it's still a great price. It'll save you many hours of time.
bdr··on Ask HN: Dark mode for HN please?
This ability might have helped them survive the KT extinction, when food was scarce.
bdr··on Ask HN: Is it worth purchasing TailwindUI?
Why do you hate utility-css?
bdr··on Show HN: Online Town – A better way to gather online
Tried this with a group of friends today and it was a lot of fun. The fading is a great touch. Main thing we wanted was a minimap, or some way for new arrivals to find us. Nice work!
bdr··on Ask HN: How to Find Anomalies in JSONs?
This seems like a statistics question that doesn't have much to do with JSON. A starting point: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anomaly_detection

You should probably start off trying the simplest thing that could possibly work for your use-case.

bdr··on Show HN: Generative art with ant colony optimization algorithms
There’s a lot of it happening, it just doesn’t get the most attention. If you’re in NYC there’s a great exhibition on now that includes generative art: https://sfpc.io/sevenyears/
bdr··on Feeling stuck? Write a poem
Plugging a side project: if you want to be reading more poetry but don't know where to start, sign up at https://verse.press/ to get a weekly poetry "playlist" in your inbox. Sometimes it's a set of poems on single theme by different authors, sometimes it's a sampler of poems from a recently published book.
bdr··on Meetup.com alternatives
Thank you!
bdr··on Meetup.com alternatives
I'm building Mixily.com as a general event-organizing tool. Like an alternative to FB events, but with better styling, features, and privacy policy. It launched in July and works great for one-off events.

For recurring events, we have some features in private beta, like pre-set guest lists and a forum. Email me at andrew@mixily.com if you want to try it out!

bdr··on High-flying ladybug swarm shows up on National Weather Service radar
I'm just speculating, but safety might be a reason. "Nothing up there" means there are fewer predators around. And if they do want to reach you, it will cost them a lot of work, while you got free potential energy from an updraft.
bdr··on Show HN: Mixily is a privacy-conscious alternative to Facebook events
Thanks! That's exactly our motivation.

Eventbrite is good for ticketed corporate events. We're building a great product for consumers—events like book clubs and dinner parties.

bdr··on Show HN: TypeScript to GraphQL conversion tool with type inference
This looks great. Thanks!
bdr··on Dracula ants possess fastest known animal appendage: the snap-jaw
It’s like they discovered rocket jumping.
bdr··on The Art Institute of Chicago Has Put 50k High-Res Images Online
The images are almost certainly in the public domain under current U.S. case law. Releasing them under CC0 is a way of saying, “just in case they aren’t in the public domain, now they effectively are.” I don’t know what you mean by unenforceable—what is there in CC0 to enforce?
bdr··on Show HN: I made a programming language with Spotify playlists
This is awesome!
bdr··on Disappearing videos and disappointed grandmothers
A little OT, but I’m curious to know what made Urbis better than the other options out there.
bdr··on Where in the World Is Denmark’s $2B?
This is an incredible story. In short: Denmark automatically withholds taxes on dividends. If you’re a foreign shareholder, you can apply for a refund on the withholdings. But they weren’t actually checking whether you owned the shares.
bdr··on The Lightning Field
Plugging my own site, but here’s a collection of poems Kim Addonizio put together after visiting The Lightning Field: https://verse.press/playlist/into-the-desert-223272706940846...
bdr··on How we rolled out one of the largest Python 3 migrations
Why are people downvoting this? It’s a fine question to ask. I think people have been downvoting questions more lately, and it’s unfortunate.
bdr··on Show HN: Flip gender in Python
Have you tried nltk’s part of speech tagging?
bdr··on Newly digitized recordings offer a glimpse of the Ukrainian-Jewish past
My friend runs a great blog called Forgotten Galicia. Here’s a recent post including Jewish history in the region: https://forgottengalicia.com/vanished-world-galicias-jewish-...
bdr··on Organicity in abstract strategy games
Thanks for the pointer, this page is really cool. It looks like someone here found a different Octopuszle solution: http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?t=99760

Looking at the four corners of the solutions on mindsports.nl, the pieces are nearly identical, and in particular the diagonals are identical. It makes sense that the two hand-solvers would use this symmetrical configuration. The programmatically found solution has different corners.

Still, that amount of constraint is surprising. It would be a nice surprise if that corner symmetry could be proven to determine the diagonal complex.

bdr··on What did Alan Kay and Steve Jobs talk about at the 2007 iPhone keynote?
Is it the OS or the input?
bdr··on A photographer capturing subcultures that refuse to die
If you like this, you might enjoy Randal Levenson’s work. http://www.randallevenson.com/project.html
bdr··on Python 1.0.0 is out (1994)
In fact 1GB was so mind-blowing that people thought it was an April fools joke.
bdr··on Miners Aren’t Friends
You register the hash of domain+seed. Second transaction reveals both.
bdr··on Maine Is Drowning in Lobsters
Lil Wayne did it first: https://genius.com/Lil-wayne-the-sky-is-the-limit-lyrics
bdr··on JSON Feed
That's not a reason.
bdr··on Which is the best Twitter bot you have come across?
The best Twitter bot imo is @tiny_star_field. It's a beautiful concept, and it was the first one I came across to generate 2D/spatial tweets.
bdr··on A Russian Poetry Scandal That Ended in a Duel
Discovery & distribution is a totally unsolved problem for poetry right now. My main project is trying to fix that. We're still pretty early, but you can follow along at https://verse.press/ or https://twitter.com/versedotpress.

If you sign up, you'll get new poetry in your inbox, and personalized recommendations are coming soon. You can also make and share poetry playlists, and it's a beautiful place to link to poems as well.

The short pitch is "Spotify for Poetry". There's a lot in the works! I'd love any feedback or suggestions you may have.
