If you look at the HN thread of the TWiST video, many were claiming they're just gassing the potential buyers up by saying they're not for sale.
I don't get why its really that hard to believe. Loving what you do is the thing I strive for, and they seem to have found it. Why mess with it?
People can say you can flip it and start anew, but 37signals has (according to DHH) enough to not worry financially and if they have a great new startup idea, why would they start a new company to do it? They have a company that they own and have the freedom to implement and launch products that they think are great.
They have the upper hand over the whole situation and have invested a lot in Flash alternatives including HTML5 (via WebKit) and video with MP4. In addition, the battery suck will ruin the (already short) battery life, and I don't think they will compromise the user experience for Flash
It shouldn't matter if you don't code outside of work and it isn't your employers business. But if you do code outside of work, it definitely says a lot about your character and how you regard technology.
My coworker said to me once, "There are those who do technology as a job, and there are those who do it as a passion. We want the latter"
I don't know much about the subject, so I'm hoping to get a bit more insight into this.
I suspect that even if our system isn't great and as good as it could be, it's still has a leg up on most education systems out there
In fact, it'll start taking over in how you interact with your whole coputer. I find that I type "<ESC>:wq" in chat windows, comment boxes, etc..
To me, having to deal with hardware just gets in the way of letting me do what I want, which I feel many people can relate to.
The second paragraph really nails it. Thanks for summing it up so concisely!
1. If that becomes the case, we'll be rich ;)
2. Do you mean because you're running to catch a train? Usually I find myself pacing back and forth not knowing where to stand.
3. The data for this app is not publicly available so my partner and his sister had to run around the city to every station and mark down every exit and stairwell. The whole process of checking, rechecking, and confirming took them ~2 months
re: website. We hadn't planned on releasing this just yet but a major newspaper had a blog post that ran early this morning so we had to hack this together :) It'll get better in time!
If you like saving a few seconds to a few minutes on your subway rides, take a peek at our app :)
We figured some of you here in NYC love little hacks to save time so we thought we'd share and here your thoughts. I always love the discussion here on HN so I'd love to hear some feedback if you have any!
This site is mostly written by chx, one of the core developers of the PHP-based Drupal project. It's not meant to be a bashing of PHP or its authors. Most likely the potential customers buying the app he built are people who don't know what a command line is.
