bdittmer··on The best team money could buy
Heh, I was just arguing with a friend who claimed that the Yankees winning was one of the few "successes" of capitalism this year. I quickly pointed out how inefficient they are as a team (using payroll/championships as the metric) and what they accomplished can hardly be considered a success.
bdittmer··on IntelliJ IDEA goes open source
Heh, if a java developer is worth his salt he will eventually be using idea. It's heads and shoulders above every other Java IDE out there.
bdittmer··on Tell PG: Cal football game (same day/campus as Startup School) to start @ 1:30
Versus the (previously) most overrated team in the pac-10 :)
bdittmer··on Sauce Labs
Checkout www.browsermob.com. They offer essentially the same service and let you try it out first.
bdittmer··on Miguel de Icaza responds to latest RMS article
What about the fundamental freedom to do what you please with your own creation? Stallman never talks about that freedom.
bdittmer··on Flash Professional CS5 will build native iPhone and iPod Touch applications
Did no one else anticipate this? Lots of other people have been doing this for awhile (mono foundation, unity, gambit scheme, etc.). Is this a game changer? Yes. It opens up the door to tons of developers. Will applications written in actionscript still have the same shortcomings as the other aforementioned languages? Probably. Looking at the AS apps in the store right now they all have larger than expected file sizes. Additionally I don't see any of them taking advantage of any of the latest API features rolled out in iPhoneOS v3. Each time Apple releases a new iPhone OS version (with all of the API changes/additions) all of these tools need to be updated and re-released. Moral of the story? If you want to take advantage of the latest API features and remain on the cutting edge of iPhone development it's best to stick with objective-c.

I find that this is the case with most articles posted on alternet.org.
bdittmer··on On those "Entitled" Twenty-Somethings
I was wondering the exact same thing. That BA in a philosophy wasn't such a good idea after all, eh skippy? :D
bdittmer··on What's luck got to do with it? The math of gambling
You're slicing hairs here, was this really necessary?
bdittmer··on Ask HN: Where do you live?
Same.
bdittmer··on Nmap 5.00 Released - biggest release since 1997
And the person I was responding to deleted his/her post.
bdittmer··on Nmap 5.00 Released - biggest release since 1997
How is this not hacker news? Nmap is the port scanner / network security audit tool that everyone uses. It's a tested and true, classic piece of software.

IT WAS IN THE FREAKING MATRIX!

bdittmer··on Senators challenge AT&T's exclusive iPhone deal
I hate AT&T as much as the next iPhone owner but is this really something they need to concern themselves with?
bdittmer··on Enterprise Java is not Object-Oriented
Two points:

1. Does it matter? If it works and it's reliable (Spring has always fulfilled both of these requirements for me) then who cares what you call it?

2. You could build the same system in OCaml but good luck finding developers to work on it. Plus I don't know what kind of "enterprise" (database/web services/etc) support it has.

Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon. Best of both worlds :D

There are times I wish we could down vote submitted stories. This is one of them.
bdittmer··on Poll: Do you smoke?
I don't think I was being hostile, just trying to inform. Down mod away though...
bdittmer··on Poll: Do you smoke?
Ugh, not to be nit picky but it drives me crazy when people use i.e. incorrectly. What you actually wanted to use here is e.g. Here is a link that discusses the differences and how to use them both correctly: http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/abbreviations/f/ievseg.ht...
bdittmer··on The Ugly American Programmer
Did you read the article? He's talking about internal engineering efforts, not gathering requirements and general interactions with the customer.
bdittmer··on Unity for Iphone optimisations cheat sheet
I really wish the submitter would have just linked to the blog post here: http://shohagsust.wordpress.com/2008/12/13/unity-iphone-game....

I'm building an iPhone app with Unity3d right now and it's actually been a real pleasure. It makes building real 3D games dead simple.

bdittmer··on LinkedIN runs over Apache Tomcat/5.0.28
I have a few apps that still run on 5.0.28. There seems to be some weird memory leaks in this version that require the tomcat process to be cycled about once a week but other than that it's pretty rock solid.
bdittmer··on Poll: you play games on your iphone/ipod touch mostly where?
Field Runners definitely has increased my daily restroom time.
bdittmer··on Sprockets: JavaScript dependency management and concatenation (SvN)
We use ant to accomplish the same thing.
bdittmer··on Recovery.gov has gone live
This is transparency after the fact. The actual bill was only available for review for something like 10 hours before it was voted on and passed. 1100 pages in 10 hours? Great.

This information should available on ALL bills at least a week before the bill is voted on by congress. I for one am appalled at how this thing was driven through.

bdittmer··on How The World Almost Came To An End At 2PM On September 18
The reports of "raping and pillaging" during the Katrina crisis were vastly over exaggerated by the media.

http://www.reason.com/news/show/36327.html

I mean, the reporting was really over the top.

bdittmer··on Everything you wanted to know about writing Mac OSX drivers but were afraid to ask
A quick google search turned up this company: http://www.mercdev.com/technologies/mac_os_development/

and they seem to have a pretty extensive client list: http://www.mercdev.com/our_clients/client_list/

bdittmer··on JQuery API for iPhone. Caches data in local sqlite db
Hrmmm...interesting but I'm not sure how useful this is. I do all my development on a machine with an internet connection and full-sized browser. Although I can see this helping settle bar bets related to certain aspects of the jquery api :D
bdittmer··on Ask HN: What web framework(s) do you guys use?
Like your experience with Helma, Grails has also been a breath of fresh air. My biggest gripe with building web apps in Java is dealing with all the dependencies, setting up a project structure and making all the frameworks play nicely together...with grails none of those headaches exist...all the stuff you'd usually use is integrated nicely into a project and with almost zero configuration. The community is very responsive and new plugins are released on a weekly basis. I definitely recommend any Java developers out there take a look.
bdittmer··on Ask HN: What web framework(s) do you guys use?
Grails (http://www.grails.org). A rails inspired Groovy framework that uses big boy frameworks (Hibernate, Spring, etc.) under the hood.
bdittmer··on Ask HN: What web framework(s) do you guys use?
I'd like to hear some of your experiences using helma!
