bdeshi··on Building a Personal Archive with Hoarder
btw the hoarder project is an active victim of a patent troll[0][1]; the official Firefox extension is currently blocked by dmca[2]. any donations might be helpful.

bdeshi··on Don't make fun of renowned author Dan Brown (2013)
spent quality time in my youth making xkcdphone style doodles for the fingertip typing gadget used by a character in Digital Fortress, something like this: https://www.techeblog.com/tip-tap-finger-computer-input-devi...
bdeshi··on Is XYplorer really written in VB6?
nice to see this on hn. the dev has just announced[1] start of codebase migration from vb6 to twinbasic which should negate all of the cons described in the article.

xyplorer has been providing partial compatibility with 64-bit windows shells by way of some "sidecar" executables, which act like hosts for 64-bit shell extensions, thumbnailers, and whatnot.

iirc some of these sidecar tools were originally written in autohotkey; now that's another interesting language.

bdeshi··on Calibre – New in Calibre 7.0
> God help you if you want to use Goodreads...

How could anyone support Goodreads seeing as their api is closed off? Thankfully calibre has the goodreads-sync plugin which still works as well as it does.

bdeshi··on Calibre – New in Calibre 7.0
If you meant the splash screen when it starts up, this can be turned off in the settings.

Otherwise the core app's UI looks fine to me personally, though some of the plugins make some, unusual, choices.

~~I think that's supposed to be the scroll bar~~. what's caught my eye is the gaps between the content and the border in the window corners.

bdeshi··on Scintilla is a free source code editing component with a permissive license
reminds me about Akelpad which was my preference over notepad++/scintilla editors. It feels similar to Scintilla but uses an allegedly more performant editing component called AkelEdit. It has lots of interesting plugins and easily editable GUI. it was fun to tinker with.

another annoyance is links that open in new tabs. if i want to open a link in a new tab, i can do it myself, websites don't have to decide for me.

that's a wild definition of a continent!

bdeshi··on Gitmoji – Yay or Nay?
Couldn't something text based ( like this[1] ) be standardized much easily?

ed. I see another comment points to the conventionalcommits proposal.

bdeshi··on Show HN: Flash replacement
is this open source? doesn't seem to have any license info.
bdeshi··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel (2014)
this video[1] by Dr James O'Donoghue really made me stop and consider how slow the fastest possible speed is, relative to the awesome vastness of space. I mean how many people have actually paused for 8:20 mins and thought, "wow that's a really long time for light to arrive from that star that seems like a stone's throw away!"

bdeshi··on Show HN: Open-source app to turn headless Chrome into a normal browser
their landing page design is... unusual; sets `dir=rtl` on english text, making the fullstops show up at the beginning of sentences.
bdeshi··on How to get started with advanced Lego building
brings back memories of ldraw. discovered the multifaceted precision of lego pieces from ldraw wiki and by reading the ldr files.

had only a handful of actual store-bought lego sets, but almost the entire catalog was on my pc, it was amazing.

ldraw+mlcad+ldview: hours of fun!
