bdavid21wnec··on Anthropic says Alibaba used 25k accounts to mine Claude
I don’t know much about the ins and outs of LLMs, but if something can be reversed engineered that quickly. What exactly is the large moat that makes them worth 1trillion?
bdavid21wnec··on Ten years of ClickHouse in open source
CHDB deserves a lot of credit too, wish they would unmark the rust version as experimental. The python version works very well!
bdavid21wnec··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
Ya completely agree, these companies will eventually push these costs to the consumer, might be in 1-2yrs, but it will eventually happen and though regulatory capture make it harder and harder to run local AI models because of “security” reasons.

Again I’m not in the “AI” industry so I don’t fully understand the economics and don’t run open models locally.

What’s the cost to run this stuff locally, what type of hardware is required. When you say virtually nothing, do you mean that’s because you already have a 2k laptop or gpu?

Again I am only asking because I don’t know. Would these local models run OK on my 2016 Mac Pro intel or do I need to upgrade to the latest M4 chip with 32GB memory for it to work correctly?

I keep seeing articles like these popup. I am in the industry but not in the “AI” industry. What I have no concept of, is the current subsidized, VC funded, anywhere close to what the final product will be? I always fall back to the Uber paradox. Yes it was great at first, now it’s 3x what it cost and has only given cabs pricing power. This was good for consumers to start but now it’s just another part of the k shaped economy. So is that ultimately where AI goes? Top percent can afford a high monthly subscription and the not so fortunate get there free 5 minutes per month
bdavid21wnec··on Future of Protein – 23g protein in a 100ml shot
Depending on the price point, I would buy these in bulk and would probably have 1-2 per day, but for me personally that would have to be around $1 per bottle. I could see myself spending $60 monthly for 2per day
bdavid21wnec··on Apple sold an estimated 180K Vision Pro units during the first pre-order weekend
Really interested if this can become a laptop replacement while at home. Not sure I would carry it to the local coffee shop, but I’m thinking with a Bluetooth keyboard I might be able to replace my aging MacBook Pro while at home. Considering all the tech it has seems like a cheaper alt than buying another MacBook Pro
bdavid21wnec··on Switching to Elixir
I used Elixir briefly, what sticks out to me was how easy it was to learn. Really like the pattern matching and immutable data. What it excelled at most and I still haven’t found the full equivalent in any other language is building a full CQRS system. The Commanded library combined with graphql was so powerful and well thought out. With the BEAM if a developer writes some bad code, instead of screwing up all your events, the GenServer will just error out on the same event until new code it pushes to fix it. Events will starting queueing, but the whole system is unaffected. It was brilliant
bdavid21wnec··on Gleam: a type safe language on the Erlang VM
So no one is disappointed gleam dropped function overloading, that was one of my favorite parts of elixir
bdavid21wnec··on Gen Zers who work remotely are 'probably not going to become CEOs' says NYU Prof
Exactly, can’t wait for their next article. “Awful employees choose to work from home for work life balance”
bdavid21wnec··on Don't let event-driven architecture buzzwords fool you
Elixir Commanded is one of the best and full featured libraries/frameworks I have ever seen for working with event driven architecture and cqrs. Add in something like Oban Pro and you have a robust system that handles failures and scales
bdavid21wnec··on Every branch of U.S. military struggling to meet its recruiting goals
Why do you think Roe v Wade was over turned. This is my favorite theory yet and just might be true. Will never know of course, but does make sense
bdavid21wnec··on Nirvana sued by the man who appeared on Nevermind’s album cover as a baby
If this guy had a brain, he would be trying to get the rights to his image and instead create an NFT of the cover and sell it for millions. Instead I hope he gets nothing
bdavid21wnec··on Ask HN: Is Selenium still the best automation tool in 2020?
testcafe is ok. only javascript i think
bdavid21wnec··on Is Twilio Wireless the beginning of the end of big telco cell phone plans?
I wanted it to be. I first started looking at it when it was in beta. I wanted to buy a bunch of 4g usb dongles from alibaba. There are a ton of cheap good ones that just require a SIM card. What stopped me is the pricing. When I looked it was about $25-$50 for 1-2gb of data. For comparison I spend $30 a month with Boost mobile for 3gb of data. That was a huge stopping point for me. No one is gonna buy your service if it’s twice as expensive as the big guys. If pricing goes down or you figure out how to scale very quickly where the price drops to like $0.0125 per mb, then you are getting competitive. In my mind voice doesn’t matter as much as many will be buying your service for pay-as-you-go data
