bcopa··on Growing a Consumer App 101
A simple common-sense framework for first-time founders. Have I missed anything?
bcopa··on The Over-Intellectualization of Consumer Apps
Agree, yep. ("persiflage," what a good word.)
bcopa··on The Over-Intellectualization of Consumer Apps
Hahaha yep, good eye!
bcopa··on How Coffee Powered the Industrious Revolution and Modern Consumerism
Never heard about chewing fried coffee beans before. Fascinating. Thanks for sharing the recipe also...will perhaps try making it on a weekend.
bcopa··on How Coffee Powered the Industrious Revolution and Modern Consumerism
Interesting, thanks for pointing it out. Most of the history I read always pointed to 9th-century Ethiopian Sufi priests/ monks as the first frequent consumers of coffee. But I agree that using modern-nation names can be misleading.
bcopa··on How Coffee Powered the Industrious Revolution and Modern Consumerism
Yep, some lists I checked rank coffee as #2 but most don't; however, it's in the top #10 most of the time.
bcopa··on How Coffee Powered the Industrious Revolution and Modern Consumerism
Hah, I didn't know that fact! Thanks for sharing.
bcopa··on The New Inflection
Pretty mind-boggling how ChatGPT wrapper apps built by dev houses in Poland are absolutely crushing it, while Pi failed to gain any traction despite raising billions.
bcopa··on Interactive Chart: How Do Americans Spend Money?
Stumbled on this incredible resource today: tons of interactive data charts to play around with.

bcopa··on Finding meaning in The Nature of Order

Some tracks for all of you who are in the thick of it in this brutal market. Share your fav hype songs below!
bcopa··on Using “The Honesty Pitch” in your user interviews
TLDR; You should explicitly ask your users to be honest before user interviews. It makes all the difference in the world.
bcopa··on Everybody Lies All the Time: A Guide to Useful User Interviews
After 150+ feedback calls our users, I share some of my thoughts on why founders should assume 99% of people are lying — and how to get them to break from this habit and share honest feedback.
bcopa··on The Rise of Workwear: A Fashion Paradox
Not at all too much — they're gorgeous.

Overall, I think workwear is reflective of much more honorable values than tacky opulent brands. Check Heddels+ for a nice collection of workwear pieces (unaffiliated with them, just a big fan of their stuff!).

bcopa··on Ask HN: I want to create a personal health dashboard, what should I use?
No connection to the app but you should check out https://www.humanity.health/
bcopa··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
1) Duck down pillows and nice bed sheets!! I sleep so much better.

There's ton of options out there but I bought all my bedding stuff from Italic.

2) Merino wool underwear by Smartwool (or Icebreaker). Trust me on this one.

bcopa··on Show HN: Google Fonts Checker
WhatFont plug in is also a great tool for this!
bcopa··on I Asked What it Would Take to Get Gen Z Back to the Office
Interesting. Most of my Gen Z friends, especially those in consulting, are frustrated that the projects have gone fully remote. It's not fun working long hours on Zoom with people you might never meet in person.

They want to return to the office.

bcopa··on Why I built a dictionary app
Also the design is beautiful!!
bcopa··on Why I built a dictionary app
Ahhh I love this idea! I thought of something similar back in 2020. Can't wait to test it :)
bcopa··on Whist, a new cloud-hybrid browser
This looks super epic. Can't wait to get access to it... contemporary browsers have remained pretty much the same – and slow – despite many user software needs advancing. Congrats to the team.

bcopa··on Ask HN: Burned Out. What Now?
First, I'd highly recommend you get a Swedish massage.

I know it sounds frivolous, but the massage will work like a magic pill on you right now. There's been some research on it – but basically persistent stress makes your body tense, and then even if your mental stress is gone, your body's tenseness keeps you on fight or flight mode. You shouldn't make any decisions in this mode.

A 60 minute massage will untangle this stiffness and put you on the right mindset to make the best next decisions.

Sorry to hear about that, looking into it right now. Did you try to Sign Up by Google?
bcopa··on About that time I had an outburst during the Y Combinator Interview
"...Michael Seibel is a professional hater. I've never been denied so consistently by such a charming, kind, and basically snuggly person."

Haha, chuckled at this. YC was perhaps the only interview in which my co-founder and I felt like the interviewers were incredible kind – but also some of the most challenging ones. We loved it!

bcopa··on What Happened to Treehouse?
This is sad. I used TH in high school... the CEO seems completely delusional and clueless in the story
bcopa··on Ask HN: How did you recover from burnout?
Search for independent masseuses, they're generally cheaper and — if you do your research — much better! Perhaps check Thumbstack or Groupon, but definitely make sure to read the reviews to find Pros.

Happy that you've gotten a glimpse of the great feeling with the mobilization techniques; a Swedish massage is a bit tense, but the after-feeling is 100x better.

I literally consider it a medical expanse every month when I go, and it is.

Best of luck!

bcopa··on Ask HN: How did you recover from burnout?
Stress is the silent killer. I won't regurgitate tired advice, but one thing I swear by is Swedish Massages.

Every time I feel overwhelmed or close to burn out, it works like magic. I get out of the massage feeling like I've microdosed MDMA, and everything is 100x better. It improves your mood, your sleep, and your outlook in general.

When you're stressed your brain stresses and your body becomes tense. Eventually though, even when you're over with the stressful event, your body is still tense and you're still anxious.

Give Swedish a try!
