bbcbasic··on Ask HN: Why this bloat in Angular?
Incase you want different versions per app
bbcbasic··on Show HN: One hostname to rule them all
Totally agree
bbcbasic··on Show HN: 5+ Billion Passwords in Order of Most Popular
If you pick the 5 billionth one you've probably picked a gooden.
bbcbasic··on Medium.com is blocked in Egypt
How is it blocked. Explicit message? Or just won't resolve?
bbcbasic··on CityBikes: bike sharing networks around the world
Ha ha
bbcbasic··on Be Careful Celebrating Google’s New Ad Blocker
It's saying to be careful when celebrating. Don't take anyone's eye out with the champaigne cork. Make sure there is a designated driver. Etc.
bbcbasic··on Ask HN: What are great examples of companies handling employees leaving?
The best thing they could do beyond EliRivers comment is, if the circumstances for, have an open conversation about what the company can improve. And then say let's keep in touch if the new job doesn't work for you maybe we can talk.

Now you might think hey.. that is an exit interview. But exit interviews are formal form filling exercised done by a HR person that may or may not have a positive effect and there is not much incentive to be brutally honest. In fact the opposite.

bbcbasic··on MIT Gets $140M Pledge from Anonymous Donor
Who gives it all away and then gets a nasty tax bill.
bbcbasic··on What was your greatest growth hack?
I think the users privacy should count for something. This is a betrayal in my book.
bbcbasic··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
Why did you decide to make this a site rather than a desktop app?

This is a private database as I see it, so there is no need for it to be online. And keeping it offline would be good for privacy, and would make it easy for anyone to download and install, rather than the more complex install needed for a web application (or letting someone else host and sacrificing privacy).

bbcbasic··on Show HN: A Browser-based Blockchain
Thanks, but while ASICs may not be a threat, in general finely tuned beefy machines might be? So that running this in a browser would be as efficient as mining litecoin in a browser?
bbcbasic··on Ask HN: How do you feel about web scraping?
How the data is used and the scrape frequency are also factors.

Google won't bombard your site with requests and at worst will cache data but not try to make use of it.

bbcbasic··on Show HN: A Browser-based Blockchain
This is good until the ASICS come in force and make mining in the browser useless.
bbcbasic··on Show HN: An “ethical” YouTube auto ad skipper chrome extension
It's not entirely ethical because the advertiser gets ripped off. It increases their cost and reduces what they are prepared to pay for ads. If everyone else used it, content creators wouldn't get paid eventually. If YouTube was independent from Google it would die.
bbcbasic··on How to segfault bash: a() { a; }; a
Cousin of fork bomb?
bbcbasic··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Externialities. Like climate change? Yep we've got that under complete control.

Another good example of chasing the mighty fractionally reserved greenback:

Value for society != Roi

There are so many examples of this I don't know where to begin. Ok I'll start: Fracking.

bbcbasic··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
Not necessarily. Deaf, blind, dwarfs, old (e.g. 70), very young (e.g. 16), single fathers and amputees would all be minorities that could apply to white males.
bbcbasic··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
That's a good point but need to be careful not to conflate racist issues with general shit place to work issues.
bbcbasic··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
Tldr; Free market and Darwinism. Move on.
bbcbasic··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
I don't think the people living on the streets are tech workers. Can't telecommute janitorial work.
bbcbasic··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
A reasoned response is a red flag?
bbcbasic··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
It means the education system is design to pump out workers rather than thinkers. Taking this to the logical conclusion, why teach science, history or sport in high schools? Low ROI. Stuff that!

Why not make the coding bootcamp start at kindergarten. And why not let parents pay for such schools so they can choose the best ROI for their kid.

bbcbasic··on Ask HN: Why shouldn't I leave Google?
> If you can't make a convincing case that you're in that top category of engineer, then what has working for Google earned you these past few years?

So are you suggesting that the 95% of people who are not to engineers are just waiting their time?

bbcbasic··on Ask HN: What motivates founders?
I checked your profile expecting another damn SF company and pleasantly surprised you are in Woollahra. Go Sydney!
bbcbasic··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Hence "small", which I took to mean "amount you can afford to lose"
bbcbasic··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Where 19990 lost their investment due to a forgotten password, a fried HDD or Mtgox. The other 10 however are now chazillionaires.
bbcbasic··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
And they'll all offer coding bootcamps, for max ROI, and nothing else. Future doctors can be imported.
bbcbasic··on Ask HN: What is a good way to get into trading cryptocurrency as a developer?
As long as there is a limited supply, speculators and draconian governments and crime it'll keep going up. I'll bet it'll keep going up.

Threats are hacks, quantum computers and crypto currency competition.

bbcbasic··on Show HN: OppsList – A small, but growing list of software opportunities
I recognised the dog kennel one! Anyone had success with that it sounded like a gooden.
