bbarn··on The Microsoft Excel superstars throw down in Vegas
People also seem to forget spreadsheets as a concept pre-date computing.
bbarn··on Concrete Faith: The creation of the Bahá’í house of worship (2023)
When I used to live in Chicago and bike race, this was one of the local sprint finish points on weekend group rides. A long flat road into a short climb and some of my favorite memories.

There's also a beautiful cobbled street on the other side of it.

bbarn··on Oklahoma Stakes Its Claim to the Tallest Building in the U.S.
One of the most land surface rich places in the US, and they build up.
bbarn··on In one of the US's hottest deserts, utilities push gas rather than solar
I work in this industry, and you have it right. Peaker plants are still valuable and serve a different need than solar. We might one day get to a point where batteries are the better option, but for now it's still just not economically sound.

This about it ruining their view and lowering market value of what should be the last house they live in.

On a side note - I am very excited about the cost lowering for whole house battery systems. In places like Arizona, and California where I live, we get enough sun that 2 of those can almost ensure the ability to not even need the grid for most people that have space to install the panels.

bbarn··on Southwest Airlines now available on Google Flights
I almost always fly SW, and it's my least favorite flying experience. Why do I fly it often then? It's not the cost, I am rarely paying out of pocket for the flights, as they're typically work related. It's just simple - they are my only option for direct flights for most of the travel I do that doesn't involve me driving 2 extra hours to go to the larger LAX airport.
bbarn··on Why Are Sloths So Slow?
Another fun fact about sloths. My wife is curator of a zoo and they have had some in the past. That slow digestion the article mentions? They probably have some of the worst smelling feces of any animal in the wild.
bbarn··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
A large part of this is there are several companies that are effectively the modernized scalpers using very high dollar pay-per click advertising, and incredibly complex optimization methods to charge the maximum markup they can. Most of them use each other as well, in cooperation via affiliate kickbacks more than competition.

Then, add in ticket brokers, with pre-reserved sets and blocks of tickets, feeding into that, and everyone is getting a cut. Not a small cut either. I do have evidence, as I worked for two of the companies for a while.

bbarn··on [dead]
Yeah, that's what I thought. I didn't want to assume, but it's the same in my Volt, if the 12V goes bad, the locks don't open. That said, it's trivial to get around that.

Definitely just rage bait here.

bbarn··on [dead]
Feels a bit like rage bait to me.

“I’ll never buy another Tesla again,” he added. “That’s the long way of me saying stay the f*k away from Teslas. They’re brutal cars, brutal manufacturing, and even worse, they’re a 10-year-old company.”

It's an 11 year old car, so, this person bought the first generation and it's broken down. Do people think EV's somehow magically last forever?

Related: Do Tesla's have a 12V battery too or just the big 48V? Both of my EV's have had 12V issues that cost around 100$ to fix, but the 10 year old Volt outside is still running strong with it's main battery and a few oil changes on the generator motor.

bbarn··on 3M executives convinced a scientist forever chemicals in human blood were safe
Not to mention the overuse of the term "gaslighting". What used to mean a serious systematic method of making someone question reality is now simply "lied", apparently.
bbarn··on High prices are not the main cause of low fertility rates in cities
Has anyone looked into the psychological drivers between population density and birth rates? Is there some innate mechanism that avoids overcrowding?
bbarn··on 'Underwater bicycle' propels swimmers forward at superhuman speed
My wife and I rented the double subnado things last time we were out of town diving. Seems that fits the pretty rich and lazy market much better.
bbarn··on How to escape Honda's privacy hell
Which European car? Nearly every one sold in the US has a "US Version" that has to go through DOT rules to be sold here, or even imported if under 25 years old. Otherwise I'd be rolling around in a new VW California.
bbarn··on How to escape Honda's privacy hell
What else would(do) you program into a dishwasher?

Mine has like 6 buttons. Hot/Cold, Air Dry or heat dry, longer wash or shorter wash, and I think a start timer function that I can click a few times to add number of hours until it goes.

bbarn··on How to escape Honda's privacy hell
That assumes the issues matter more to them than any of the hot-button political stuff they actually campaign around. Abortion, Gun control, etc.
bbarn··on They thought they were joining an accelerator – instead they lost their startups
Exactly. I worked for 4 months at a company and just put "Contractor - various" in that spot because I did not want the stigma of that company on my resume.
bbarn··on The Stripper Index: An unorthodox recession measurement
A 2 week vacation and 2 long weekends to Disney World don't seem out of reach for any middle class family, let alone a company owner. My sister is an adjunct professor and I think has been to disneyland 3 times this year already.

The rest of it certainly sucks though. There would have to be a VERY good motivation for me to travel that far for work. Most of us on here are involved in software and I'd be shocked to see if less than half of us were remote or partly remote.

bbarn··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
Once there is a framework for legal sale, and regulations around it, you think all these states will continue to just not comply?
bbarn··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
I really don't think this is a positive in any way, unless you oppose recreational marijuana usage.

Making it a schedule III puts it back in "Doctor prescription" territory, and since there's now a legal route to getting it, a lot of these businesses that have operated with impunity are breaking a different set of laws if it's schedule III. No doubt that laws and decriminalization statutes would need to be updated to comply federally. Banks may be able to be used, but only if you're a registered pharmacy. It's really just a lot more questions and a lot more people to profit on the chain to selling it.

Most of the world still treats it as an illegal substance. In the US we have definitely allowed popular sentiment to make it appear much less harmful than it is. I'm not sure it belongs in schedule I, but it certainly doesn't belong OTC.

bbarn··on Hertz is ditching even more electric cars
Plug in hybrid, not pure BEV, but my 2014 GM Volt has 275K on it, have had to do minimal maintenance. Probably use 80-90% on battery only, few road trips where I've used gas.

I have a BEV as well, and I have to say - I don't understand why the PHEV market didn't take off. All the savings for daily trips, and the convenience of gas to never think about range anxiety.

bbarn··on Apple Vision Pro Customer Interest Dying Down at Some Retail Stores
I think the VP is more of a don't get left behind thing than a real product intended to sell. Keep R&D slightly engaged, build a better mouse trap in the apple way, and if some AR/VR solution does catch on, at least they aren't far behind the market.
bbarn··on Apple Vision Pro Customer Interest Dying Down at Some Retail Stores
The market is CEOs who casually leave it unused on display in their offices.
bbarn··on Apple Vision Pro Customer Interest Dying Down at Some Retail Stores
Show them the practically unlimited camera roll and say you can call people from anywhere and they'd think you were a wizard.
bbarn··on Airlines in the U.S. charge separately for checked bags in order to reduce tax
It's a pretty polarizing subject. I am in the "just check all my crap and be done with it" camp, but many people you'll have to pry their roller bag carry ons from their cold dead hands.
bbarn··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
The article even mentions them having to use code names for the film while securing the place to film.
bbarn··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Palm and Microsoft both made incredible (for the time) smart phones. The iPhone (and to a lesser extent android phones) were just on a totally different level. While Windows CE and PalmOS phones were trying to fight off blackberry, the iPhone was a different animal all together. The later Microsoft phones trying to compete on that level made a massive mistake of trying to tie in a bad UI design (the windows 8 square tiles for days UI) to it's desktop.

It was all timing, and by the time the war was over, MS would have had to become revolutionary in a field that pretty much every new thing had already been done, so it made sense for them to throw in the towel and get back to their money maker - business apps.

bbarn··on IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states
Because most audits are done on income over that level.

Also, this is definitely the "MVP" version of this, and I would venture people with incomes totaling more than 250K have at least one other thing "not supported yet" and it makes for an easy filter.

bbarn··on Meta outage
This would be a point for sure, except this is a primary and the only people who can vote in it are registered party members. Young people actually registered already care enough to know it's the primary today.

This one is already decided though. Biden on the Democrat side, Trump on the Republican. If anything it might hurt the Trump side a bit, as people may not realize that the Supreme Court only yesterday ruled states can not block him.

bbarn··on Meta outage
Yeah, and they've dug themselves a hole with having near permanent login persistence. I can't remember the last time on a computer I use frequently that I've had to log in.
bbarn··on Meta outage
I've seen this posted everywhere like it's some grand conspiracy.

What is the impact of it being Super Tuesday? Are people worried they can't vote without social media?
