bballer··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Do the math of what it costs a city per resident - napkin math it, total tax intake divided by population. Now compare that to the additional taxes and money that person (who is wealthy) is not injecting into your city.

So out of touch to think the net spend of a gov directly on an individual would be worth sacrificing all of that additional capital injected to your other neighbors and their businesses.

bballer··on Canadian military will rely on public servants to boost its ranks by 300k
Do you call taxes slavery? Same thing.
bballer··on SQL nulls are weird
And to further apply semantics to this just to be snide, the value is only "missing" if it could possibly ever be defined for that tuple. There are cases where you expect the value to be "missing", and it not being "missing" would be considered a data integrity issue. Fun.
bballer··on Who killed the rave?
This is still how we do it in Mexico, but instead of the woods, its in a Arroyo, wedged between a mountain and a beach. Good stuff.
bballer··on Mistakes engineers make in large established codebases
Bahh thanks for the chuckle. The man is 7/7 as of today!
bballer··on Should more of us be moving to live near friends?
Can I ask what country that is in?
bballer··on Ask HN: Best and Worst API Documentations?
Use Open API and then something like https://stoplight.io/ and you will get first class API docs that automatically update with your spec changes.
bballer··on Show HN: Feathery – build powerful, developer-friendly forms
Is it possible to pipe data from the forms directly to custom API endpoints and control the shape of the JSON payload that is sent?
bballer··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
The fact that the XHR/network console on Chrome doesn't format JSON responses is insane. Your in the most popular browser in the world and you have to copy paste the JSON into a formatter to read it?? Really??
bballer··on The media's lab leak fiasco
Nice strawman.

We aren't ready collectively to confront these types of truths about the new way of life we have slowly settled into over the last 10-20 years.

bballer··on Monthly salaries across the world (avg disposable income after tax and rent)
Might want to think of renaming the "Country" column since you are also including states in there.
bballer··on Graphics for JVM
The JetBrains suite (ie IntelliJ, Datagrip etc) while not open source, are a testament to what can be done with JVM based GUI applications.

Have you ever used the merge tools? So dang cool.

bballer··on Some idiot is using your tool to mass scan our network
This is great, thanks for posting.
bballer··on Rob Pike's Rules of Programming (1989)
I've been preaching this to all my non-coder creative marketing type buddies who have ideas all the time and think they can just whip up a product using all the latest and greatest no-code tooling.

They are destined for failure.

bballer··on Corporate buzzwords are how workers pretend to be adults
Haven't heard the "lift" one yet but it feels like a bunch of high school students trying to create their own internal jargon which makes them appear more "hip" per se. Just replace a word with another, adding 0 value and excluding those who don't "get it" therefore creating an exclusivity around it's usage.

Also the "North Star" one, whew, shudder is correct. Let's bury that one forever.

bballer··on Contractors use shell games to hide owners, cheat taxpayers

bballer··on PayPal to acquire shopping and rewards platform Honey for $4B
Yeah they sponsored a ton of Yes Theory videos as well. It always felt a tad off, but you're right, it worked.
bballer··on Amazon Is Accused of Forcing Up Prices in Antitrust Complaint
That's not a truism. If manufacturers only sell DTC (direct to consumer) and don't allow third party sellers to compete they do so for two reasons, price control and brand control. The lack of competition between third party sellers allows them to sell at any price the market will bare since they are the only ones you can buy the product from. When third party sellers can distribute/sell the product as well and there is no enforced MAP (minimum allowed price) it leads to a race to who is willing to accept the smallest margins on the sales, which in turn makes it purely a who can do the most volume with the best marketing. This actually results in the lowest prices for consumers.
bballer··on My Hardest Bug to Debug (2018)
Maybe your case was more complicated but most IDE's now will tell you about unused variables, methods/functions etc. So if variables storing the calculations that were being built up never ended up being used in the end context of the function you may have gotten a nice gray/red line. It becomes harder to trace if those values are being updated into some table which then never gets used.

It is amusing that sometimes huge swaths of complicated code exist simply because everyone inheriting them is to scared to touch them even though they are basically orphaned and have a net 0 effect on outcome.

bballer··on Start before you think you’re ready
I find that as long as you start with the DB schema and core interfaces (system level rather than code level) and then move to framing out the general pillars of the code that you often will get 80-90% right. Refactoring will be a plenty but that is true in every project no matter the upfront planning. Just don't miss any edge cases which rewire your schema and you generally can keep a good pace on forward progress. Also it's generally true that the larger (see more complicated) the problem the more planning one should generally do.
bballer··on Big ol’ ball o’ JavaScript
> If I change this code, what will happen?

This is why I love single file Vue components[1] with scoped CSS/SASS. The styling for the component in question is right there with the markup and JS, and you know it's not effecting any other HTML with it's declared classes/styling. Breeds a lot of confidence when making changes without having to follow more rigid and fragile paradigms.

Obviously you will still have global styles and themeing but figured this is at least worth a mention.
