baylearn··on Defective Altruism
That's an honest take. Many folks at places like OpenAI (or even, dare I say... Anthropic) don't actually buy into the EA 'religion' and are simply there because they get to do cool fun stuff that's intellectually challenging, get paid well, and can live a very comfortable life.
baylearn··on “Art is dead Dude” – the rise of the AI artists stirs debate
This article generated some discussion on Twitter between Stable Diffusion's developers and artists. See this thread:

baylearn··on Chinese nationalists call for Matrix boycott after Neo joins Tibet-linked event
The original title of the article is "Chinese nationalists call for Matrix boycott after Keanu Reeves joins Dalai Lama-associated concert" but I had to shorten it to 80 characters to fit HN submission form.
baylearn··on Billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya: ‘Nobody Cares’ about Uyghur Genocide in China

baylearn··on Taiwan to launch $1B Lithuania credit fund amid Beijing pressure
The credit fund will focus on developing semiconductor talent and facilitating semiconductor development, as well as biotechnologies, satellites, finance and scientific research, according to Taiwan's National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin.
baylearn··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
The Chinese government had demanded Lithuania’s remaining diplomats in Beijing hand in their diplomatic IDs to the foreign ministry to have their diplomatic status lowered. The move raised concern in Vilnius that the officials could lose diplomatic immunity, putting their safety at risk if they remained in China. [1]

After Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a representative office in Vilnius under the "Taiwan" name, and subsequently getting blocked from Chinese customs from EU shipping routes [2], and now being asked to change the ID of their diplomats to remove the diplomatic status, many would not doubt that the Chinese government would arrest and detain some embassy staff in this move, as ordinary residents of the country, like they have done in the past in the case of Canadians [3]

baylearn··on How Taiwan’s Digital Minister solved a mask supply problem
Agree, I would have preferred a better title too.

And knowing her reputation in the hacker community, it is anything but unlikely to me that something like this has happened.

baylearn··on U.S. Imposes Sanctions on 11 Chinese Companies over Human Rights
Could be of interest to HN, as many tech companies on the list:

“The list of sanctioned companies includes current and former suppliers to major international brands such as Apple, Ralph Lauren, Google, HP, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss and Muji, according to a report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a think tank established by the Australian government. The group cited the websites of the sanctioned Chinese companies, which mentioned their financial relationships with major American brands.”

baylearn··on Hong Kong’s protest movement keeps getting stymied by Apple

baylearn··on The machine learning community has a toxicity problem
Agree with this point:

Sixthly, moral and ethics are set arbitrarily. The U.S. domestic politics dominate every discussion. At this very moment, thousands of Uyghurs are put into concentration camps based on computer vision algorithms invented by this community, and nobody seems even remotely to care. Adding a "broader impact" section at the end of every people will not make this stop. There are huge shitstorms because a researcher wasn't mentioned in an article. Meanwhile, the 1-billion+ people continent of Africa is virtually excluded from any meaningful ML discussion (besides a few Indaba workshops).

baylearn··on Hong Kong: books by pro-democracy activists disappear from library shelves
LinkedIn also works in mainland China, but it is subject to censorship. [1]

baylearn··on Hong Kong: books by pro-democracy activists disappear from library shelves
Interesting. I took a screen snapshot of the front page: https://imgur.com/gallery/thY5Tl6

Compared to #1 and #2 ranked posts, which have half the upvotes, but uploaded within the same hour or two, this post is ranked #19.

Maybe many people are "flag"-ing the post so the HN ranking algorithm pushes it lower.

(Edit: For the record, I don't believe the HN mods are doing any downmodding here, and it's probably just due to the ranking algorithm and behavior of the HN audience)

baylearn··on Hong Kong: books by pro-democracy activists disappear from library shelves
I think Facebook, Twitter, Google, and all the other US-based platforms offering HKers a voice are next.

See the recent WSJ piece: "Facebook, Twitter, Google Face Free-Speech Test in Hong Kong" (https://redd.it/hkw6yh)
