bavarianbob··on Intermittent fasting more effective than calorie restriction
Takes longer for protein to be digested, it's just nutrition 101.
bavarianbob··on Intermittent fasting more effective than calorie restriction
The more that one experiments with these diet changes, I think, the more one reveals how untrue that phrase "most important meal of the day" becomes. I feel unstoppable if I skip breakfast, lethargic if I don't.
bavarianbob··on Building an app to learn languages with short stories
Really great food for thought here, I'm going to have linger on it some more. I don't know enough about LLMs to know how to counteract hallucinations, but I wonder if you could construct an LLM against a vetted corpus (much like Anthropic does with Claude) in which it solves for the problem of generating robotic speech patterns. I do agree with you a lot on the "sound" problem because I don't think I'd advise a non-native English speaker to blindly trust ChatGPT as a learning mechanism based on my experience of using it.

So, in conclusion, I'm curious to learn whether this is a solvable problem or if LLMs are inherently not the right tool to use.

This comment is chefs kiss. Amen. This is what I'm building a solution for.

I've been thinking about a layer on top of these chat apps that augment the experience for learning in particular. I've found that once you dig into the problem, a key element to solve for is reinforcement. The "provide information" part is easy, now how do you make it stick and how do you continue over an extended period of time?

I find the feature on Kindle to be awful to use. It's sluggish and I've got to do additional work to import the highlights into clippings where I'll then have to do more work to put it somewhere I can consistently review? ugh. The experience OP and software like LingQ have created makes learning words a joy and it's sustainable.

This is wonderful! I'm building something similar for Italian and I love how you have thought through this problem. Kudos for shipping!
bavarianbob··on Building an app to learn languages with short stories
I just read the article and OP actually does get it checked by a native speaker. You still have concerns despite that additional step?
bavarianbob··on Building an app to learn languages with short stories
I feel similar, have any thoughts on what it would take for you to learn from a language model? I think for me, it's some sort of review from a native speaker. If they gave a stamp of approval, I wouldn't think twice about learning from a human versus model.
bavarianbob··on Ask HN / TypeScripters: How Choose JavaScript?
No one is. You signed up to potentially receive that as soon as you decided to build something. Filter the noise and move on my friend.
bavarianbob··on Ask HN / TypeScripters: How Choose JavaScript?
Why do you feel the need to justify yourself on that decision? That brainpower could be better spent going to new features or a more robust codebase. The audience that is pedantic about what the technology is written in is not an audience worth spending time satisfying.
bavarianbob··on Ask HN: What am I missing about ambition?
> I just keep seeing the people I respect leaving and the people I don't respect getting promoted, over and over again.

I resonate to this feeling and how I reflected on my own experience was that it isn't me, it's the company. As others have mentioned, relationships are king. In some companies, it's likely you're not going to make relationships with the decision makers and that's not a reflection of who you are.

Thinking this is an ambition problem is self-blame and is unfair to yourself.

bavarianbob··on Ask HN: Will experience with ML become fundamental for engineers?
Sorry to hijack your question, I'm also software engineer with focus on security and one thing that has troubled me is where I should continue learning within security for the purposes of staying competitive (I have no issue learning to learn!). Seems like AI and Web3 (smart contract auditing) security flood my x feed, curious to know your thoughts on good skills to have for the future 5 years within security.
bavarianbob··on So Much for ‘Learn to Code’
This article took a turn for the best. Nearly three-quarters of the way in, I was irritated that another "haha cs majors, you're not as slick as you think you are" post had spawned. Instead, the author notes something of intrigue: thinking, adapting, questioning, and forming connections between concepts are going to be increasing in importance. It's less important to know specifics in a given language or technology than ever before.
bavarianbob··on Ask HN: Firefox issues – is it only me?
iOS Firefox user, do not have this problem.
bavarianbob··on Startup Success: The Shift from Traditional Hiring to Staff Augmentation?
Well this is a healthy dose of propaganda.
bavarianbob··on Thinking in a foreign language improves decision-making
I find that writing my thoughts is my antidote to this problem. Circular paths of thought are quickly squashed and I have something to visually audit when I ask myself if spending more time thinking will likely enable me to make a better decision.
bavarianbob··on Thinking in a foreign language improves decision-making
I'd also posit that thinking improves decision-making.
bavarianbob··on Read Old Books
I find it interesting that reading content that is older and sometimes labeled as lindy is a radical or unorthodox idea. More times than not, aged content is my first choice. I always learn more, the content is grounded, and it stimulates my thought process about either parallels or contradictions between then and now. To be clear though, I'm not discounting content that has been recently published. Valuable content is valuable content. Not sure why the age is a negative deterrent for some readers.

bavarianbob··on Show HN: Solvethemurders.com – AI murder mystery game
Interesting concept and I'd love to play, consider no registration required and I'll give it a shot.
bavarianbob··on Discord.io breached, 760k user accounts for sale on darknet
I believe discord.io is (was?) a discovery platform. You can view an archive of the site here: https://web.archive.org/web/20220329132537/https://discord.i...
bavarianbob··on Temptations of an open-source Chrome extension developer (2021)
I believe problem isn't the right word. I think OP is challenging your assumption that it's inherently freeware. There are methods for monetizing an extension and they're infrequently used or associated with a much larger experience (e.g. my BitWarden extension is critical for using BitWarden, but I pay for BitWarden's subscription elsewhere).
bavarianbob··on Llama: Add grammar-based sampling
Could someone help me with context? I'm OOTL and don't understand what is going on here.
bavarianbob··on Bookwyrm – A federated social network for reading books
I can't be the only one with a burgeoning appetite for an experience that is solely focused on the individual. I don't care about being social in this domain and that opinion often feels like a contrarian one. I want to track my books, my thoughts on those books, and my upcoming queue. There's a handful of services that provide a wonderful curation of books to read (mostly human-curated) and as such, my queue is never empty.

It seems as if every new service is trying to incorporate algorithmic recommendations, social elements, and other useless frills. Let's get back to the basics. Give me a rock solid digital library.

bavarianbob··on How I run my servers (2022)
> One complaint about this setup is that paying $5/month for every service you want to run is a lot.

Oh, you sweet summer child.

bavarianbob··on Hacking LangChain for fun and profit
It inflates its promises and then grossly under delivers.
bavarianbob··on The Future of the Web Is on the Edge
I enjoyed reading your level-headed perception of this.
bavarianbob··on How to Hire Good Engineers
Quite elitist requirements ya got there. Give me an engineer who understands how to transform requirements into business value over one that has a sick tmux environment.

Refining the details of pet projects is not a luxury that not everyone has. If the quality of the candidate was correlated, then sure. Even still, candidates who get shit done have always been the perceived best hires.

bavarianbob··on Ask HN: What do you code when learning a new language/framework?
Is there a tutorial for the boilerplate for setting this up? Where would I even begin as someone who has never built any graphics.
