baudehlo··on Robert Scoble: “I apologize.”
Wait, what? Why does he need to be forgiven?
baudehlo··on EasyList: Ad-serving domain removed due to DMCA takedown request
Try 127.0.0.254 then.
baudehlo··on Arrest of WannaCry researcher sends chill through security community
I really hope that last statement isn't true. Do you have any idea how horrible being in prison is when you are innocent? Your values are twisted if you think the innocent having their lives ruined is better than a criminal going free.
baudehlo··on Arrest of WannaCry researcher sends chill through security community
I think the worry here is that he now has no way of returning to the U.K. where he earns his income. He is stuck in jail in the US without reasonable access to a good lawyer (an appointed lawyer won't understand this case). His outcome looks bleak, guilty or innocent.
baudehlo··on Show HN: Using functions to construct Regex in Python
That validates an RFC5322 email address which literally ONLY email clients need to do (and maybe a few things that process received email).

Most things need to process and validate only RFC5321 (and 5890, 5891 and 5892 for Unicode) addresses.

baudehlo··on 6 Women Accuse Tech VC Justin Caldbeck of Sexual Assault and Harassment
Well that and he admitted them. So there's that.
baudehlo··on Your own company? You can do it (2011)
I hope writing that down helped. Because that is not sustainable. I tell developers that I interview that I don't want them working long hours because it leads to bad code. Go home. I want you to have a life and one you enjoy.
baudehlo··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
Correct, and those systems were even referred to as "email" before this date. Just not in published specifications.
baudehlo··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
Correct. And that despite not having anything to do with what we now call email, he copyrighted his program. So despite people using the term before his program, owning the copyright was more powerful.

He needs to lose badly and soon, before those people die and can't testify against him.

baudehlo··on History by lawsuit: the “inventor of e-mail” targets Techdirt
So you're saying he's just insane?

I mean he categorically did not invent email. My friend Dave Crocker was involved in the birth of email and this guy was not participating in that process. it was created before his invention. It's just a lie.

baudehlo··on A peek under Bitcoin’s hood: Writing a client that can create a transaction
This is like admitting to stealing things from people who leave their houses unlocked. If you think that is all good then you need to re-evaluate your life choices.
baudehlo··on Comparing Bandwidth Costs of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Cloud Computing
Well you're not comparing to AWS without ops, you're comparing to hiring someone for non-AWS vs managing AWS on your own. Outsourced ops know your systems. They have contracted guarantees. They can manage your own systems, hosted systems or even AWS. Using not-AWS saves you enough to pay for that.
baudehlo··on Comparing Bandwidth Costs of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Cloud Computing
You can buy sysadmin services. This isn't a full time job at that level.
baudehlo··on Theresa May Wants To Regulate The Internet
Ditto. And sadly they will likely win the election.
baudehlo··on Amazon Echo Show
That's a shame since I wrote the RFC/BCP on DNS blocklists while at Symantec.
baudehlo··on Postal: Open source mail delivery platform, alternative to Mailgun or Sendgrid
That's why you always set up a local mail server that delivers onwards to these services. I documented how to do that with Haraka here: https://baudehlo.com/2016/07/26/setting-up-haraka-to-send-to...
baudehlo··on Stanford Professor Loses Political Battle To Simplify Tax Filing Process
Most people in the U.K. (the only other place I have experience with) never file a tax return. It's just assumed that the government is doing the right thing. Taxes are taken at source for all things, and if you have things outside of the norm you can tell your employer about it and they'll take care of it.

Filing taxes was pretty alien to me. I'm used to it now, but it seems there are simpler ways.

baudehlo··on Building a Hackintosh Pro
So just like using Linux then? /s
baudehlo··on From lunch to acquisition: How Atlassian bought Trello
Bitbucket, unlike github, clung to a design of many servers connected to a big disk. GitHub instead went for many servers with their own disk and a distributed storage system. This means that bitbucket ends up being a lot slower in many operations than github.

Aside from that, it's fine.

baudehlo··on Lavabit Reloaded
If patent law worked like coodies that comment would be awesome.
baudehlo··on Lavabit Reloaded
Fwiw search that way is (I think) patented by Proofpoint. So it might be hard to implement.
baudehlo··on Show HN: World class unlimited email hosting for all your domains from $4/month
Not sure what your idea of "not much less performance" is. When craigslist switched from postfix to Haraka they went from 20 email servers down to 7 for the same load.
baudehlo··on Turkish government revokes ham radio licenses
This site is better than most - I gave you an upvote to show that :)
baudehlo··on Turkish government revokes ham radio licenses
But after this, will that ever be allowed to happen again? This coup, false flag or not, has spelled the end of that control.
baudehlo··on Ask HN: Considerations when asked to write a book?
I'd be shocked if anyone got a 4 figure advance. I got a few hundred dollars for an XML book in the height of the XML times. Ultimately the book never got finished but everyone I know who has written a tech book (unless it's a huge seller) says expect nothing more than lunch money from it, plus the employment opportunities.
baudehlo··on Tell HN: New features and a moderator
Still no ability to comment via the API? Apps are still scraping to do this.
baudehlo··on Facebook Messenger begins testing end-to-end encryption using Signal Protocol
And yet the same argument has been made time and time again against SMTP. Let's stand back for a second and understand why SMTP has stood the test of time. Yes it has flaws that allow the "first contact" problem (ie spam). But the people working on SMTP at least understand the weaknesses and advantages of that.
baudehlo··on Tech job listings are down 40% on several job boards
Having an interest in security is a huge win for you. Hiring people into that field is impossibly hard because there are a tiny number of people employed in that area (I came from that field and it's very hard to find people to hire). That doesn't mean you're guaranteed a job, but if you want to be in that field, seek the jobs out. They exist.
baudehlo··on Tech job listings are down 40% on several job boards
Bear in mind two things if you're looking for a software dev position: 1) most software dev is fairly boring, but often you can make of it what you do. You can make it boring or interesting. 2) it's not for life. Every job is a stepping stone.
baudehlo··on Rails 5.0: Action Cable, API mode, and more
I'd love to see an active record (npi) of that 2m active web sockets. It's trivial these days to make 2m connections (it's just a RAM problem), but marshalling data between them is the non-trivial problem, as is actually having active data crossing those sockets.
