battery_cowboy··on Americans' perceptions of police drop significantly in one week
Honestly, when I was in the Navy training in a security squadron, we were basically taught to deescalate, use the lowest force we could, be it hands, mace, a baton, a pistol, the machine gun, etc. We were drilled never to use deadly force unless it was very clear we were in danger, were told to shoot second, because it's better to risk ourselves than risk killing an innocent person, that our backup would ensure the security of the ship or base so we didn't need to get trigger happy. I remember, strongly, the great fear I had about accidentally hurting the wrong person whenever we had live security events and i had to unholster my pistol.

I just don't get the way police are trained, they are there to risk themselves to ensure others are safe, even the criminals. Instead, they're trained to treat them worse than i was trained to treat literal terrorists.

battery_cowboy··on Linux Mint Dumps Ubuntu Snap
Pop!_OS is like Ubuntu (it's based on it), but easier to install and use and doesn't use snaps, it has flatpaks and the usual apt.

Hold down the power button for newer Android builds and press "Lockdown".
battery_cowboy··on Show HN: interviewing.io is out of beta and open to engineers of all levels
Not everyone likes to work on code in their free time, though, and code from work is often not public. How do you suggest people like that get jobs then?
battery_cowboy··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
You're saying some people exclude others from their friends group because of fucking smiley faces on a message? God that would be stupid if true.

FYI, I read the whole article without JS fine, thanks for making the site work without it even if it says it doesn't.

battery_cowboy··on “Phones are being blocked from taking videos or pictures”
My point is more that this seems like a feature that no phone company would install without a law requiring it, if it's really in there, this feature would be really, really dangerous because any criminal could then just use the same equipment to disable cameras. It's also pretty bad to be depriving people of the use of their property against the 4th amendment and probably the 1st as well considering it's limiting photography and free expression as such.
battery_cowboy··on Tesla's Australian big battery recoups cost of construction in two years
Australia is already taking steps to eliminate negative pricing and some of the volatility, which will make it harder to profit on this type of installation as quickly. Most of the profit was made in ways that won't be as available in the future. Batteries are still important for other reasons, but don't think another 10 of these batteries will get the same returns.
battery_cowboy··on “Phones are being blocked from taking videos or pictures”
I'd like to see some evidence of this, it seems surprising that a company like Apple or Google would do this for the government without some fight back.
battery_cowboy··on AT&T exempts HBO Max from data caps but still limits your Netflix use
Net neutrality is supposed to mean that all data are equal.
battery_cowboy··on The U.S. Military Is Monitoring Protests in Seven States
Yes, it was pretty much bullshit, I am not happy about my role back then.
battery_cowboy··on Prowords
I can only guess it was from Hollywood, but in the military no one uses it because it's wrong. People down vote for several reasons, but I don't worry about that usually, I'm just here to talk to others a bit and read about technology.
battery_cowboy··on Ask HN: How to Progress for Seasoned Professionals?
I vouched you, so don't start spamming; sorry I can't help with the career question, I'm a developer who also doesn't really know what I want to do from here.
battery_cowboy··on The Trolley Problem Problem
It's just debugging or maybe reverse engineering of some subject or belief.
battery_cowboy··on Prowords
You don't say that, you either say "over" (I've finished talking, go ahead and talk more yourself) or you say "out" (I'm done talking on the radio now, bye).
battery_cowboy··on The U.S. Military Is Monitoring Protests in Seven States
I appreciate your experience, but in the USA, regardless of what these other posters are stating, you can't use the military for law enforcement except for very narrow limits. They are mistaken when they say this use is legal, but I can forgive their error since America has basically turned into a banana republic, so it's hard to understand some things that are occurring daily used to be really illegal and looked down upon.

battery_cowboy··on This Website Will Self Destruct
Put it into a docker container, run with the `--rm` flag, then when it expires have it delete it's own git repo and other data before exiting, then it'll really be dead.

I wrote this earlier, I love art projects like this, it's better than a million Ubers to me.

Why are you commenting if you don't live in America and don't understand the situation? De facto is way different than de jure.
battery_cowboy··on Christo has died
Man cannot live on STEM alone.
battery_cowboy··on Christo has died
He'd probably have liked that his art inspired you to make new art, artists usually love that sort of thing.

> Augment MN State Patrol Civil Disturbance Operations with a show of force

Well, that's fucking illegal as shit. You can't use military to perform law enforcement actions, and a "show of force" is clearly a threat to use the force, which would be a law enforcement action, since a show of force is technically a responsive security measure. The military is only supposed to support law enforcement with things like medical care or what have you, but this falls clearly on the side of law enforcement.

Edit: when I was in the Navy, we performed counter drug operations where the Coast Guard would legally "take over" the ship's command structure, temporarily, so we could legally perform law enforcement actions against drug boats thousands of miles from the USA. When we spotted the drug runners (by helo or intelligence), the Coasties would immediately become in legal command of the ship because any warnings over the radio (where we told them to stop or we'd shoot their engines) or shots to do so would be considered a law enforcement action since it was a "threat of force". We (the officers) were told if we did anything over the radio or even chased the boats before the Coastie Commanding Officer took over, we'd get court-martialed for some sort of violation of the US Constitution, no shit.

battery_cowboy··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
For most things I'd reckon you could skip most of that. Everyone thinks they need a Ferrari when a bike can then to work easily.
battery_cowboy··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
Most web applications don't need any of that. Also, I didn't say k8s was useless, just that it's the new thing everyone wants (that they probably don't need).

Exactly! I've started writing just for myself and I'm not going to even listen to people or maybe even never show my work.
battery_cowboy··on SQLite Turns 20
I would be proud to make something a hundredth as useful and prevalent as SQLite.
battery_cowboy··on Tired of productivity “hacks”. What long term techniques have worked for you?
I write things I need to do down, I do things that take 5 min or less right now, and I don't read about current events more than once per week for about 30 minutes, and I limit myself to HN for social media and turn no 'noprocrast' so I can come here only once per day for 60 minutes. I find that if I follow these rules, I get things done at a reasonable pace since I am limited from the time sucks.

>grind & RTFM

Nothing is more true, as I start to relearn C after 20 years, that there is no substitute for the above. Literally, there is no good C tutorial or way to learn other than just writing some goddamn code and trying to make it compile.
