batemanesque··on Erik Naggum, RIP (2009)
yes, HN is truly exemplary in its rigorous self-examination
batemanesque··on ThorCon Power
I mean this in the nicest possible way, but you guys need to redo yr site - a lot of the design cues make it look like a one-man fringe project which (assuming that's not the case here) is unfortunate

edit: more specifically, it's not about making it look more expensive/complex/modern but moving away from the specific aesthetic it has right now

batemanesque··on Some thoughts on hidden services
to be honest I wasn't even thinking as specifically as these suggestions - not that any clear solutions occur to me either. but they should, at the very least, recognize that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. I'd like to think there's a less fatalist & more morally empowered approach available besides "forget it, jake, it's anonymous". side note, it's good to see someone here considering the needs of poorer users
batemanesque··on What is it about the financial sector that encourages bad behavior?
worth noting that the HN admins often silently change submission titles so the poster wasn't necessarily responsible for this
batemanesque··on Some thoughts on hidden services
sickening, if unsurprising, that their only recommendation is to improve the public profile of hidden services rather than make any actual attempt to address abuse. would be nice to see them adopt something other than the Reddit-naïf position on the misuse of "free speech"/cryptography
batemanesque··on Has Travel Become Another Exercise in Narcissism?
damn Millenials, everything is an exercise in narcissism these days
batemanesque··on The Book of Life
more like the book of trife
batemanesque··on In conversation with Marc Andreessen
education & available time are issues for the poor as well, not just availability.
batemanesque··on Show HN: Miimic – Let your friends text for you
got a couple of suggested improvements:

1. make "Lie and Get Laid" yr slogan

2. reëvaluate yr entire understanding of ethics/communication/human beings

batemanesque··on Show HN: Miimic – Let your friends text for you
does "everyone" include the prospective date on the receiving end of behavior that violates basic social norms & assumptions?
batemanesque··on Ask HN: Is anyone successful with the 7-minute workout so far?
it's decent as an absolute minimum, but what you should really do is buy a barbell, 10-20kg in weights, and do SQUATS.
batemanesque··on 'Pardon Snowden,' one tech exec tells Obama, report says
well, if a tech exec says it...
batemanesque··on A Critique of Lavabit
the other aspect is that despite the whole reason for Lavabit's popularity in recent years being NSA stuff etc, their site freely admitted that they couldn't refuse to fulfil legal government data requests, but that users shouldn't be worried because that would only apply in the case of criminal behavior. which bizarrely, is the same justification many NSA-overreach supports use: "if you're not doing anything wrong, you've got nothing to worry about."...

also, I always found it slightly dishonest that the free tier they used to provide featured no special encryption, given that their stated reason for existence is to provide secure communication

batemanesque··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
careful! comments like this might get you disappeared by the YC positivity-maintenance crew
batemanesque··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
it's a real shame Disrupt carries any weight. the awful hype is one thing, but the fact that it screws over genuinely promising companies due to its grotesquely corrupt nature is a real problem
batemanesque··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
"backed by Michael Arrington" - what more reason could you want?
batemanesque··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
sad to hear this, great product. in a perverse way it was also nice to see an article & responses from the team that dodged the usual Valley bullshit.
batemanesque··on Tap your iPhone to unlock your Mac
one question - does this use the real Mac login screen or some less-secure alternative? a lot of similar apps I've seen used the latter which is a dealbreaker from a security POV, & it would be great if Knock differs in this respect
batemanesque··on Tap your iPhone to unlock your Mac
doesn't work for me - I've installed & opened Knock on both Mavericks & iOS7 & Bluetooth (which, to be fair, is through a Belkin USB stick) & the PC doesn't recognize the iPhone, simply telling me to install it from the App Store. I love th concept so would be grateful for a fix...
batemanesque··on PayPal Startup Blueprint
considering PayPal's ethically void approach to business there are few things I'd recommend to a startup less than having any sort of involvement w/ them
batemanesque··on Is The Economist left- or right-wing?
"naive wealth redistribution" seems to be a bit of a strawman to me. re: European tax rates, perhaps it would be more accurate to describe the Economist as supporting the current economic status quo. besides, while Europe does have a much stronger safety net, it's almost as unequal as the US - it's not like the well-off are any less hegemonic there.
batemanesque··on Employment in America: WTF is going on?
"Stop begging for jobs" is an approach that requires a level of privilege most people don't possess
batemanesque··on Is The Economist left- or right-wing?
in other words: "bipartisanship"!
batemanesque··on Humans.txt
hah! a reference to a popular aspect of geek culture! more of this, please.
batemanesque··on Is The Economist left- or right-wing?
the best summation of the Economist's editorial viewpoint is that it's aimed at rich businessmen, & consequently combines tacit support for economic inequality w/ choice morsels of liberalism - viz. healthcare & gun control - in order to differentiate itself from "unsophisticated" paleoconservatives
batemanesque··on Is The Economist left- or right-wing?
THANK YOU
batemanesque··on A better approach to determining gender from a first name
opted for "straight privilege" as an alternative to "cisprivilege"that I thought HN people were more likely to understand. I'd have thought it was obvious I wasn't actually talking about orientation
batemanesque··on A better approach to determining gender from a first name
re: the brogrammer thing, that's little more than a sign of the breadth of their insidious reach...
batemanesque··on Computational Synesthesia: Audio Analysis with Image Processing Algorithms
you might be interested in MetaSynth (http://www.uisoftware.com/MetaSynth/index.php) & Izotope's Iris (http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/iris/) which basically offer the converse of what you're doing here. fascinating from both a technical & a sound design point of view.

the former's what Aphex Twin used to insert his face into the Windowlicker"" spectrogram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windowlicker#Background

edit: his face is actually in "[equation]"; "Windowlicker" has a spiral.

batemanesque··on A better approach to determining gender from a first name
ah yes, because trying to be decent & inclusive to persecuted minorities is the comparable to supporting an obsolete browser - yr analogy is a perfect illustration of the grotesque intersection between the Valley & bigotry.

also, "the hypothetical case where gender matters" is a glorious illustration of straight privilege
