basq··on Still Manufacturing Consent: An Interview with Noam Chomsky
Technically, he's an anarcho-syndicalist.

basq··on Microsoft introduces Windows 10 X for dual-screen devices
Amusing because PC user have been saying this for years and years and years.
basq··on Employers Used Facebook to Keep Women and Older Workers from Seeing Job Ads
Think it's safe to assume gp meant paid advertising.
basq··on Google Employees Explain How They Were Retaliated Against for Reporting Abuse
A company owner who doesn't see the points of unions... unsurprising.
basq··on Dark crystals: the brutal reality behind a booming wellness craze
My previous roommates (a couple) were both big into xanax and crystals. They'd go on walks around the town, f'd up on scrips, and pick up rocks, bring them home and gush at me about what they found 'look at this ruby!" They'd proclaim (it was just a shard of broken beer bottle, I kid you not). By the end, the side of our house had accumulated a several hundred pound collection of (totally mundane and worthless) rocks. Their plan was to crack these rocks open by throwing them at the (concrete) ground, hoping to find crystals inside. In my opinion the benzos infantilized them, because they were not like that when they moved in, it was a downward spiral of a transition over two years.

This wasn't even thier worst quality. But I will always remember thier 'crystal' hobby.

basq··on Firefly III – Self-hosted financial manager
At least in my case, it's because I don't know of any better options. Mint is very easy but if something else was almost as easy but provided similar features (or more, even) I'd give it a sincere try. But other options I've heard of are cli tool/emacs packages, which is too much to ask for what is usually less robust and requires significantly more effort/time to get up to speed with and use.
basq··on 50 U.S. states and territories announce broad antitrust investigation of Google
Windows default products have also been improving in quality, like the mail and calender client. The calendar one is quite good actually. Typescript is also a pleasurable experience (as a new web dev, great timing!) vscode is nice to use too.
basq··on Jeffrey Epstein’s Donations Create a Schism at M.I.T.’s Media Lab
Indeed it is not, as the definition given for the word is not even it's colloquial usage anymore, although the new usage is related:

basq··on Verified by Twilio
Many Americans are allergic to the idea of the government doing anything but managing national defense.
basq··on The Hong Kong Way
"thousands of kids" ohoho... Right ...
basq··on Who Owns Huawei?
I've seen the term 'market socialism' used when describing China's system.
basq··on Facebook Is Dying
Perhaps foolishly optimistic, but maybe they can turn things around. They abused a lot of people's trust, but it isn't impossible to imagine they could win it back.
basq··on Black soldier fly maggots: high in protein with a small carbon footprint
Since we're being pedantic, insects are still animals, and therefore eating them is not vegan.
basq··on Blender 2.80 release candidate
Eevee is a gpu only renderer.
basq··on Anomalous CPU utilization on Windows build node caused by ads
Blender is good for character animation, but it's learning curve is higher and there aren't as many QoL improvements as in other 3d software. 2.8 is a step in the right direction but I still find cinema4d to be much much much faster to get results with for my purposes of motion graphics.
basq··on Anomalous CPU utilization on Windows build node caused by ads
Gimp/inkscape are not drop in replacements for ps/illustrator. Unless your use case is very basic.
basq··on It’s Time for Caps Lock to Die
On a 60% and no idea where scroll lock lives (time to check the manual). But I've come to really prefer ctrl in place of capslock. I'm also somewhat of a madlad as I remap every game I play from wasd to esdf. This allows my pinky to use 'a' key for functions normally mapped to shift (like running in games), have two 'shoulder' keys (instead of q/e its qw/rt) and I can leverage the finder-key bumps for quicker hand placement. It costs a single 5 minutes per game but provides and overall more ergonomic (and consistent with touch typing) experience, in my opinion. There are also a few other benefits, but I won't go into them. Figured if I had the patience to learn/write emacs chords, I could do this much, and it paid off quickly.
basq··on Microsoft's Linux Kernel
You pinpointed exactly the rub I was experiencing. Reminds me of "Rules as Written" vs "Rules as Intended" dichotomy I see mentioned on the Dungeons and Dragons stack exchange.

If this really is the year of the linux desktop, it's not what I had imagined.

basq··on How to Understand the Universe When You’re Stuck Inside of It
What you've written is extremely interesting. Not sure how much of it I truly understand, but I wanted to add that your explanation for everything as a wave function reminded me of oscilloscope music, ie. depicting images with waveforms. A tutorial I watched demonstrates the drawing of a mushroom, then animates it by modulating with a larger wave. In my laymen's head model, Spacetime is like a very large wave that everything else is being modulated by.

basq··on Why are the username and password on two different pages?
Was an avid user of kpxc for a year. The auto type feature did not feel secure compared to other pwm's. It requires the username input field to be focused, and if the wrong field is focused (click didn't take?) or otherwise changes mid-type it spills your credentials into the input and sends them. Other managers seem to at least try to validate the entry types.
basq··on A New Wave of Bad Ads Is Hijacking Even Top-Tier Websites (2018)
Mozilla seems to (or will) be doing exactly this.

basq··on Supreme Court rules federal courts cannot invalidate partisan gerrymandering [pdf]
Indeed. As an anecdote, many of my left-leaning friends have become full-blown communists over the last few years. The political situation is likely going to get much much worse before it gets better.
basq··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
So we can push those users out of thier censorship-laden safe space, and into the rest of the 'public' so to speak, thus they can be engaged and in cases of rule-breaking, reported.
basq··on Learning Synths
Took a piano 1 class at a nearby college last fall, and I agree with all of your points. I did walk away with a firm grasp on major and minor chords, which is something that escaped me in the 20+ years I'd played music.
basq··on Learning Synths
I'll also vouch for syntorial. Completed the demo years ago and I still use those techniques every day.
basq··on ‘Pre-bunk’ game reduces susceptibility to disinformation
There used to be this thing called the fairness doctrine. It's abolishment paved the way for 'infotainment'.
basq··on Franz Kafka Agonized over Writer’s Block (2017)
Yes. This is exactly the case with music, too. Once the song's basis is created, everything that comes after has to 'fit in'. It's much harder to do sound design without that blank canvas effect.
