basicneo··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I like the idea, and your website looks great.

What would you do differently if you had to redo it?

basicneo··on Our Year in Review: How we’ve kept Firefox working for you in 2020
> - Laying off 25% of their engineers

If Firefox need to cut costs to survive, this is part of keeping Firefox working for us.

> - Sending all of your browsing history to Cloudflare

Are you referring to DNS over HTTPS? That's not all my browsing history, though it is still more than I want going to CloudFlare.

basicneo··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
> You’re implying that the impact only matters if it is direct.

No, I acknowledge and want to account for indirect effects.

I just want to hold ourselves to empirical evidence, not just our political leanings.

basicneo··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
They are anti-reality. They are a net negative in our efforts to contain a highly contagious virus.

I can see why you are scornful of them. But that doesn't make them a significant cause.

basicneo··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
I agree it will have had some effects, both directly and indirectly. It's not clear to me how significant the effects are.

Granted, we have to act on imperfect information at times.

basicneo··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
How much has anti-mask protesters contributed to the surge? They got a lot of coverage in [social] media, but what's the marginal impact they have, given their frequency?

It's important to establish the actual significant causes of issues, so we now how to improve in future. Actions of those on opposing political sides would be a convenient and perhaps comforting significant cause, so we should be careful in prematurely concluding that.

basicneo··on Brexit deal mentions Netscape browser and Mozilla Mail
Perhaps so, but none of this is relevant to jgraettinger1's subthread.
basicneo··on Brexit deal mentions Netscape browser and Mozilla Mail
Let's keep political cheerleading off HN.
basicneo··on Chinese economy to overtake US 'by 2028' due to Covid
First they laughed...
basicneo··on New Linux port for the Nintendo 64
Ah, that makes sense. I can see why that would be useful.
basicneo··on New Linux port for the Nintendo 64
+1 to software/hardware necromancy.

How does a Linux port make it easier to port emulators or console games?

Is this a step towards getting an N64 on a modern (?) stack like qemu+linux?

basicneo··on Tips for a Better Life
When taking advice from people, I weigh it by how much I want aspects of their lives

The Lesswrong community live in a narrow rationalist bubble.

basicneo··on Write code. Not too much. Mostly functions.
Any justification for that?

IME, the point free style is aesthetic.

basicneo··on On the Graying of Gnome
What are your thoughts on the Pinephone?

What would a reasonable goal for success look like? How can it be achieved? What would cause it to fail?

basicneo··on Cyberpunk Game Maker Faces Hostile Staff After Failed Launch
> It seems like management is the same almost everywhere. Bad.

If you perceive almost all management is bad, perhaps your standards are unrealistically high.

I don't mean that in a glib way, I mean that the decisions they have to make might be more nuanced and difficult than how you see the decision.

basicneo··on Cyberpunk Game Maker Faces Hostile Staff After Failed Launch
If I had worked for months doing overtime only for the game to be released before it was ready, and seen the reaction it has got, I'd be frustrated.
basicneo··on I Bought Apple Silicon
One person's "bloat and inefficiency" is another person's "features at low cost".

We simply wouldn't have the services we have today at their low price if our hardware didn't offer them more breathing room.

As inefficiency tips more towards degradation in machines, more emphasis will be given to efficiency.

basicneo··on Post Mortem of Google Outage on 14 December 2020
Is that an accurate tl;dr?

"As part of an ongoing migration of the User ID Service to a new quota system, a change was made in October to register the User ID Service with the new quota system, but parts of the previous quota system were left in place which incorrectly reported the usage for the User ID Service as 0."

basicneo··on Flanderization
The Big Bang Theory exhibited this quickly.
basicneo··on Zero to Emacs and Org-roam: a step-by-step guide on Windows 10
+1

https://github.com/joaotavora/eglot is developed by a core Emacs developer who plans to mainline it. It works great.

basicneo··on England's Covid-19 infections down 30% during national lockdown – survey
You're questioning the doom narrative.
basicneo··on Areweyet
Different people have different specialisms, and they each have their own goals.
basicneo··on We read the paper that forced Timnit Gebru out of Google
Analogies aren't meant to withhold careful scrutiny. They're suggestive.
basicneo··on AI researcher Timnit Gebru resigns from Google
I wasn't commenting on expected outcomes of their behaviour, just that I think it's a bit of a jump say to they are "rude and abrasive " in general.
basicneo··on AI researcher Timnit Gebru resigns from Google
Experiencing marginalisation is frustrating, and frustrated people sometimes have outbursts.

I don't think we can infer much from a few highly publicised events.

basicneo··on EU criticises 'hasty' UK approval of Covid-19 vaccine
"I'm not convinced that if [the UK] had been part of that European buying programme they'd have had quite the speed and flexibility to do it." -- Hugo Fry. (Pharma head, who happens to be a remain supporter.)

https://web.archive.org/web/20201203131008/https://www.teleg...

What leads you to such confidence in what looks like an uncertain matter?

basicneo··on EU criticises 'hasty' UK approval of Covid-19 vaccine
In another comment in this post you say:

> Actually a deal is currently being negotiated to determine exactly how much they can tell us what to do, in return for avoiding the total destruction of our economy

"Total destruction"? The brexiteers aren't the only ones invoking fear.

basicneo··on EU criticises 'hasty' UK approval of Covid-19 vaccine
What has led you to conclude the UK hasn't been more efficient with the data?

The head of the regulatory agency refers to a "rolling review". Perhaps they are confident enough so far that they are willing to roll this out to the most vulnerable, if they've found that their risk of side effects (even with high error bars) is lower than their risk of getting coronavirus.

That would then buy more data which will inform continued rollout to the less at-risk population.

basicneo··on EU criticises 'hasty' UK approval of Covid-19 vaccine
Some cultural notes: the UK is in a culture war, and some will shine the most negative light on anything the opposing side do.

Taking a more charitable approach... is it possible those suggesting Brexit has allowed a quicker rollout aren't referring to regulations?

Perhaps the early rollout is facilitated by UK doing their own deals with vaccine manufacturers, rather than as as a package deal with EU (and thus having to wait for their slower and safer process). Is that it?

basicneo··on S3 Strong Consistency
Do you have a link to the commits that removed the code. It'd be good to see what sort of complexity this sort of strong consistency can make redundant.
