baseline-shift··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
I never write on an iphone, so didn't know today's ridiculous apostrophizing is an autocorrect thing - but that could explain why people sound like idiots or would that be sound like idiot's on the internet.
baseline-shift··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
I find it the worst when giving driving directions for most streets and towns in New Zealand because Siri has not been trained recognize or pronounce Maori names. So you ask for directions to ie Oneroa (oh-ner-ROW-a) will attempt to find own-ERRR-ua and explain that it doesn't exist. What laziness! How hard is it to train siri in all languages?
baseline-shift··on xPrize Wildfire – $11M Prize Competition
I've read a lot of answers which suggest the usual things that are considered in the wider community, so it is a bit surprising that there are no AI type solutions put forth in this site for hackers.

Surely some way to detect and extinguish the beginnings - where these escape notice far from human eyes and noses - has a coding or robotics solution?

baseline-shift··on [dead]
Youtube, eh?
baseline-shift··on Why AI Needs a Mental Model of the Physical World
Hawkins' and Dawkins' "A Thousand Brains" explains why this is so very well. For this reason, we'd almost expect that Boston Dynamics' dancing and door opening robots would make a better starting point for AI
baseline-shift··on The US Wants to Close an ‘SUV Loophole’ That Supersized Cars
Great news. Long needed simple fix for climate. The highest sector for GHG emissions in California for example, is transport.
baseline-shift··on Sorting waste and recyclables with a fleet of robots
Wouldn't it be more efficient for the robots to do the sorting instead of the humans so there are no mistakes that need correcting.

For one thing, when someone puts ie a custard contaminated paper plate in recycling, the custard can contaminate other paper recyclables. Too late to fix.

Just do it right the first time. Give it to a robot to sort.

baseline-shift··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
as the pictures show in that article, at 9 weeks, there is no fetus. What was aborted is kind of loose clump of matter about 1"
baseline-shift··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
you are right, my mistake. I will edit my comment to include what an abortion looks like measured against a ruler at up to 9 weeks (most abortions are that early)
baseline-shift··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
Unborn baby is a misnomer:

There are photos here of the aborted pregnancy tissue (gestational sacs) aka "unborn baby" shown at up to 9 weeks with a ruler

by this GP who performs abortions:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/22/opinion/early-abortion.ht...

The GP notes that most abortions are performed in the first 9 weeks:

"It’s important to us to counter medical misinformation related to early pregnancy because about 80 percent of abortions in the United States occur at nine weeks or earlier."

baseline-shift··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
This "abortion pill" is actually taken within day after intercourse. It simply prevents implantation of the ovum in the womb lining. So in fact there is not yet even a zygote, let alone a fetus, let alone a third trimester unborn baby
baseline-shift··on Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done?
Just blocking all websites except what I'm working on. I use Freedom.to

Setting it for very small bits of time helps. Like I know I need a couple hours. But I set it for half an hour in an hour so it's not threatening. I often find I get absorbed in the work in that half hour. Continue till I hit another block. Again set it that in half an hour everything else is blocked for another tiny bit of time.

baseline-shift··on Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done?
Just blocking all websites except what I'm working on.
baseline-shift··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
Yes, insane zoning limits in cities in the US since the 60s have indeed made it impossible to build near jobs.

But there's abandoned medieval villages (no plumbing or electricity so far...) in hilly rural Italy.

baseline-shift··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
In Japan, there are empty houses going cheap as old people die off. In a few decades, possibly there will be some effect as the de-population bomb from lowered birthrates globally begin to affect real estate prices. Let's hope.
baseline-shift··on Previous political campaign hush-money crimes convicted
This is a lawyer's fairly detailed history of how previous cases like Trump's went.

This election fraud case (hiding money spent to prevent facts becoming known while campaigning for office) is a Federal elections crime convicted many times.

baseline-shift··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
As a journalist who needs to read very technical research papers and interview scientists involved, in order to make the implications of that experiment accessible to the lay person, I find Chat GPT actually excels at cutting through the impenetrable academic jargon that can put you to sleep before you can discern the bottom line - and also explaining the equations etc in straightforward language.

(My prompt: Explain in simple terms, or Explain for a university level reader).

I'm finding it very helpful.

baseline-shift··on When did New York start building slowly?
Permitting time is far longer. Not addressed in this story.
baseline-shift··on Live-caption glasses let deaf people read conversations [video]
I don't understand this page https://www.nreal.ai/compatibility-list/ What do the glasses need to be compatible with? I don't recognize or own any of these products listed.

I have an iPhone. How does it work with a device as part of the deal?

baseline-shift··on Live-caption glasses let deaf people read conversations [video]
true. But all transcription tools are terrible transcribing technical language if someone has accented English.
baseline-shift··on Live-caption glasses let deaf people read conversations [video]
I am pretty deaf yet somehow have wound up interviewing people for a living (go figure).

I currently use googlemeet and recently switched to Otter.ai for recording/transcription. Unlike the previous transcription tools for journalists that I used in the past - Otter.ai generates the text live on the laptop screen while we are talking and even corrects itself to make sense as the speaker reveals contextual clues.

It is a huge help, and I had wished there was something for real life conversations like this is for screen conversation.

Good news for deaf people. You only have to watch newscasters speaking through a pasted-on permanent grin - as if every word is ee - to know that lip reading is garbage.

baseline-shift··on Cut the Cutesy Errors
The guy needs to know what he can do about it. That should be in the error message. I'd be happy with:

Sorry, but something went wrong. Call or text the ticket counter at blah blah to access your ticket

baseline-shift··on Solar furnace to melt steel at 2000°C for Swiss recycler
The thermal energy storage aspect of CSP is how the heat is accessed to run the power block - it not paired with- like some kind of bolt-on extra - is definitely demonstrated at scale. Just not in the US, which only tried out 5 CSP plants, only 2 with storage. China is currently building 30 CSP plants - all with storage. Here's how thermal energy storage in CSP works https://www.solarpaces.org/how-csp-thermal-energy-storage-wo...
baseline-shift··on Solar furnace to melt steel at 2000°C for Swiss recycler
Wow, that is very interesting and informative. I had not realized that.
baseline-shift··on Solar furnace to melt steel at 2000°C for Swiss recycler
To decarbonize heavy industry, highly concentrated solar thermal is the best option. Heat is the form of energy most responsible for carbon emissions in industries like steel and cement. Solar thermal (duh) generates heat from thousands of "suns" of sunlight.
