base698··on More info about synonyms at Google (2010)
I've found Google totally useless for all things LaTeX and resorted to using LLMs.
base698··on Embeddings are a good starting point for the AI curious app developer
Yes, only more sophisticated embeddings can capture that and it's over 300+ dimensions.
base698··on Embeddings are a good starting point for the AI curious app developer
If you think about it like a point on a graph, and the vectors as just 2D points (x,y), then the synonyms would be close and the unrelated meanings would be further away.
base698··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
If TV turned everything into entertainment, including discourse, then social media has turned every discourse into being an influencer. I frequently see people at a coffeeshop set up cameras like they are filming a TV show to talk about their latte or muffin for Instagram. This happens everywhere in all walks of life. Any hobby, no matter how esoteric, will be molded into the shape of good for instagram.
base698··on Moderna's mRNA cancer vaccine works better than thought
I mistyped translation. Been 20 years since biochem.

If you think of the gene in RNA form (transcribed from DNA), it's a gene being translated to aminos. The gene is therapy.

I get gene therapy isn't used that way but I was trying to fairly interpret what people could mean.

base698··on Moderna's mRNA cancer vaccine works better than thought
Because it transcribes something from a gene?
base698··on Why Are So Many Americans Dying Early?
Seems still higher some countries and lower in others. I'm not familiar with the country codes, so if someone is maybe enlighten me. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php...
base698··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
> The vehicle touches down at 214 to 226 miles per hour, back wheels first. The nose then touches down, the drag parachute is deployed, and the shuttle cruises to a stop.

That's a lot of energy to bleed off.

base698··on Ivan Illich’s radical critique of modern certitudes (2021)
One of the notable things from "Deschooling" is his solution. Illich describes was could be thought of as Meetups using the internet. Hobbyist experts with common interests that can serve as teachers and demonstrators of skills.

One of the big insights is that today you have teachers who are certified in teaching and experts in a particular thing. The two are very rarely present in the same person.

> In deschooled society professionals could no longer claim the trust of their clients on the basis of their curricular pedigree, or ensure their standing by simply referring their clients to other professionals who approved of their schooling. Instead of placing trust in professionals, it should be possible, at any time, for any potential client to consult with other experienced clients of a professional about their satisfaction with him by means of another peer network easily set up by computer, or by a number of other means. Such networks could be seen as public utilities which permitted students to choose their teachers or patients their healers.

Site looks great.

base698··on John Carmack and Rich Sutton partner to accelerate development of AGI
Anyone know if they are focusing on LLMs or something else entirely?
base698··on Will workers hired as Remote all be laid off in next wave?
> They’ve all made passing comments that they will continue to support remote workers, but from my perspective the writing is ultimately on the wall.

I'm not aware of any of them continuing to support remote other than for select roles in the internal or external messaging.

base698··on Ask HN: How do you look for jobs in 2023?
As someone that skated through 2008 employed, this seems worse to me. I've seen people that are good take a year to get a job. Some even left willingly last year only to faceplant into the current situation.
base698··on Ask HN: How do you look for jobs in 2023?
Most of my unemployed friends have taken 10 months or longer to find employment. Some are even local in California where it seems like there should be more opportunities than seeking remote only.
base698··on We need scientific dissidents
In California during December 2020 after allowing outside dining they shutdown all restaurants. I don't remember when they relented and allowed outside dining again but it was into 2021. Most schools were closed for almost 2 years. Most offices and theme parks were much much longer.

People conflate China style lockdown with massively disruptive policies we had in California. While I wasn't boarded in my home, I was turned away while outside dining to use the restroom in a restaurant and got threatened by the police by the beach when beaches and parks were still closed.

The narrative is more, if anyone advocates for anything like that again they are the enemy.

base698··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
I assume everyone had roughly the same thought around 2012. Mid sized city jobs paying 100k+ and you could still find homes with half an acre for $300k. As salaries got inflated due to FAANG and startup competition it really seemed like an easy out was just keep a lower cost place or rent. The dream of WFH was find a HCOL job and buy LCOL place and a helicopter or maybe just save for retirement at 45.

Now given the cost of living increases, the $300k places push $900k in midsized cities. The HCOL areas have gone up in value and the mortgage due to interest is almost twice as high over 2019. Assuming a $15-$20k net take home the housing will be half of it. Grocery bills seem about twice as high. Even with much higher salaries it seems like everything has been squeezed back to the 2012 math. Not everyone ended up riding the salary train and it's even harder form them. And that's assuming you get to keep your job in the shuffle back to the office/layoffs.

base698··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
Sometimes how epic an idea is takes precedence over how risky something appears.

Were that not our inclination as a species we'd never have left the Earth or sailed the seas.

base698··on Dumb and Gets Things Done (2010)
Definitely worse than the smart and gets things done 10x dev who wraps every method call in a separate service connected by queues.
base698··on Onboarding Antipatterns
> Your chair is still on order

A company I worked for was hiring up for a new initiative. A new hire got the job and was on vacation when he got the offer. They demanded he start immediately and leave his vacation a week early. He obliges and starts the next week cancelling the second half of his vacation. He arrives and there is no where for him to sit and they hadn't even bothered ordering his equipment.

base698··on Our model suggests that global deaths remain 5% above pre-Covid forecasts
If you're of child rearing age your risk of dying was like driving 10,000 miles. Also, you're delegating your responsibility to the "other". As other posters mentioned if that level of risk is unacceptable you can choose to take measures that bring the risk more inline with whatever tolerance you have.

Some of us are more afraid of an all powerful state using any excuse to further their own interests.

base698··on Our model suggests that global deaths remain 5% above pre-Covid forecasts
Reading the teachers subreddit I have seen post after post complaining about letting kids graduate who willfully missed 100-200 days of school. I was not aware it was as large of a problem if the reddit posts are to be believed.
base698··on New study: 70% of type 2 diabetes cases linked to food choices
Not a doctor but it's because when you are diabetic the angiotensin system gets out of whack. Angiotensin is what is part of what regulates sodium and potassium in your kidneys which is what controls blood pressure.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renin%E2%80%93angiotensin_sy...

I think the salt consumption is a bit of a red herring and it's better to fix the metabolic syndrome.

base698··on New study: 70% of type 2 diabetes cases linked to food choices
I am but an n of 1. I have been monitoring my blood sugar, cholesterol, lipids and some other metabolic markers for 2 years. I struggled keeping my blood sugar under 100. My cholesterol was kind of high at 220 total.

Switched to a keto two months ago and everything has improved. Blood sugar always 90 or less, cholesterol 180, LDL down about 30%.

base698··on New study: 70% of type 2 diabetes cases linked to food choices
This is what my wife did and it worked for her. She used to crash hard when eating a higher carb diet. She would hit in the 60s. After switching to keto it was more modulated and stays in the 80s.
base698··on Is the US education system in a state of collapse, and what caused it?
I live in a smaller red city and it's as bad at select schools as it is in SF. Generally public education is horrendous here and everyone with an above median income sends their kids to private school.
