bartman··on How Game of War makes more than $1M a day
Thanks, sure sounds like it could have been them.

Gawker reported that Zynga had set up a "Platinum Purchase Program" allowing members to purchase virtual currency in amounts over $500 at favorable rates by making a payment via wire transfer.

bartman··on How Game of War makes more than $1M a day
Which company would that be? A quick google search doesn't turn anything up.
bartman··on Why can't Apple decrypt your iPhone?
On iOS it's possible to capture the framebuffers of other apps via the IOSurface APIs with an app that's running in the background. These APIs are not documented well, but it's certainly possible.
bartman··on Delight.io (YC W10) shutting down Jan 31st
From all iOS screen recording startups delight.io still has some of the most impressive technology. This is especially true for OpenGL-based apps. Where other companies [1] require numerous code changes, Delight took the extra effort to hide all this from the user and only require one additional line of code.

I'm currently working on a usability testing startup myself in which we developed similar technology, and were constantly impressed by how easy Delight kept it for their users.

Good luck with your next project, Thomas, Chris and Bill.

bartman··on 30C3: Streaming
The 30th Chaos Communication Congress started today in Hamburg, Germany. All talks are streamed live, here's a link to the schedule for today: http://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/Fahrplan/schedule/0.html

Many talks are held in English, and most others are translated live (select the "translated" stream).

A few interesting talks today are:

16:00 CET "07KINGSTON25 JAMAICA: MALARIA UPDATE Dispatches from Fort Meade" about Chelsea Manning's trial (http://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5634.html)

16:45 CET lasers in space (http://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5311.html)

18:30 CET Long distance Quantum Communication (http://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5536.html)

19:30 CET Keynote by Glen Greenwald (http://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/Fahrplan/events/5622.html)

bartman··on BlockPRISM.org Facebook Encryption for Everybody
Based on the beta version of the Chrome Extension, they use https://github.com/wwwtyro/cryptico to create a RSA keypair based on a user-provided keyphrase. The private part is stored in the LocalStorage of the extension and the public part seems to be submitted to the server. Actual message encryption then happens using AES, but I'm not sure about the details. They delegate all actual crypto to the cryptico lib, so the description on GitHub is probably accurate for BlockPRISM's encryption too.
bartman··on Germany says Cold War tactics don't help EU-US trade talks
When they say "Germany's third largest party" it's important to know that they only hold about 11% of the seats of the German Parliament (Bundestag) right now and are unlikely to affect matters in this case.

bartman··on Kage shadows production traffic to QA servers
Great project, I'd be a little cautious proxying all my production traffic through a new experimental piece of software though.

On EC2 there are two ways to get a dedicated machine:

- Using VPC you can specify that your instance should run on dedicated hardware [1]

- Cluster Compute instances [2] most likely (see [3]) run on dedicated hardware too

bartman··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (February 2012)
Berlin, Germany (Remote considered) FULL TIME

NVIDIA ARC GmbH is looking for a senior software engineer to join our GPU cloud computing project. We're building a rendering solution that greatly reduces the upfront costs for rendering and design studios by seamlessly integrating cloud computing into the 3D modelling and rendering workflow. User response so far has been great - see these (slightly outdated) videos to get an impression: [1] [2]

We're a team of five engineers looking for an engineer with outstanding C++ and network programming abilities to take over the client-side part of this project. You should be familiar developing in multi-threading applications and integrating with binary protocols and RESTful APIs. Experience with EC2 and HTML/Javascript/Coffeescript is a plus.

Technologies we use are AWS EC2, (unbiased/consistent) real-time raytracing, C++, CoffeeScript/Javascript, Python, PHP, HTML, Flex, RESTful APIs, single-command deployments. You'll have a lot of freedom in working with technologies you like and prefer.

We prefer somebody who's in Berlin or willing to move, but are willing to consider remote as an option for the right candidate.

Personally, I've been with NVIDIA for 4 years and enjoy the flexibility and freedom I'm given, both on as an engineer and employee (for example, moving to the US to study abroad & transfer to NVIDIA US for that time was encouraged and quite easy).

Feel free to email me (see profile) or apply online at [3].

bartman··on Ask HN: Would you pay for hardened AMIs/VMs?
I'd be interested in having AMIs that cut down on the boot time as much as possible. For example most cluster compute AMIs need at least 3 minutes to boot, by slimming the image and maybe intelligently ordering the filesystem it should be possible to speed this up.

bartman··on Show HN: PickHealthInsurance.com
Great site, I especially like the explanations for the different terms.

How did you get all the insurance rates and terms, just from the companies' sites?

When I tried evaluating the health care plans my company offered me a few month ago I had a terribly hard time getting information about the different plans that are out there. (But then again, I'm not from the US and the whole health care system keeps confusing me.)

bartman··on Estimate your English vocabulary size
My background is roughly similar to yours (German, 9 1/2 years of English in school, been living in the US for 10 month) and I got 10.900 words.

Especially seeing the second and third page surprised me as I can't recall ever hearing most of these words. My girlfriend noted that many of them are older terms, but still I expected to have picked up some through movies or books.

On the other hand: studying and working in the US with just 11k words works quite well.

bartman··on Revisiting 'Zork': What We Lost in the Transition to Visual Games
While not by Infocom, Photopia is probably the best Interactive Fiction I every played.

You can download it at http://www.wurb.com/if/game/255 (http://mirror.ifarchive.org/if-archive/games/zcode/photopia.... probably being the best choice). It's possible to play it online at http://www.ifiction.org/games/play.php?game=332&mode=htm..., but it's not as much fun as with the real version.

To open the .z5 file you need something like Zoom [1] for Mac, or Frotz [2] for Windows.

bartman··on Name.com: Another Unscrupulous Registrar
I'm very satisfied with http://www.inwx.com/. They give you full control over the DNS entries, prices are good and their interface isn't cluttered.

And of course they don't do any of these shady things common with big-name US registrars - it's your domain, they just provide DNS and registration.

bartman··on The Unofficial Guide to Migrating Off of Google App Engine
Typhoon App Engine allows you to set up your own GAE compatible environment: http://code.google.com/p/typhoonae/

I never used it, but it sure looks interesting if your application doesn't fit GAE anymore or you want to make specific infrastructural adjustments. They support multiple different database/http/.. servers too.

bartman··on Anonymous speaks: the inside story of the HBGary hack
From page 2:

"The only way they can have some fun is to elevate privileges through exploiting a privilege escalation vulnerability. These crop up from time to time and generally exploit flaws in the operating system kernel or its system libraries to trick it into giving the user more access to the system than should be allowed. By a stroke of luck, the HBGary system was vulnerable to just such a flaw. The error was published in October last year, conveniently with a full, working exploit. By November, most distributions had patches available, and there was no good reason to be running the exploitable code in February 2011."
