barkerja··on Charter charges more money for slower Internet on streets with no competition
I currently live in an area where Spectrum is the only "broadband" provider. I pay $75 for 200/10. My town finally said enough is enough and is now in the process of rolling out municipal owned internet.

You can see the details for that here: http://dryden.ny.us/information/dryden-municipal-broadband-s...

It's unfortunate that many states have passed legislation to block municipal internet. Corporations such as Spectrum, Comcast, etc. should not have that sort of lobbying power, but yet, here we are.

barkerja··on Emulating AirTags to upload arbitrary data via Apple's FindMy network
Settings > iCloud > Find My > Find My iPhone > Find My network
barkerja··on Google promised its contact tracing app was completely private, but it wasn’t
Maybe it was/is a dud for COVID-19, but there does appear to be many gains from this outside of COVID-19. Infectious diseases that ARE highly transmissible on contact has been dramatically reduced.

Am I suggesting we continue with this level of rigor for cleaning after the pandemic has ended? No. But it does highlight how much "healthier" we can be as a society with a little more emphasis on general hygiene.

barkerja··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
> Eventually I had to switch to Google Calendar for work. Plenty of our users are in the same boat and Google Calendar doesn't support native functionality.

My company uses Google for calendar but I still use the native Apple Calendar app on both macOS and iOS. Am I missing something groundbreaking that requires using GCal natively?

barkerja··on Facebook criticizes Apple’s iOS privacy changes with full-page newspaper ads
> There doesn't seem to be a good, evident third option just yet.

I think a good middle ground here is an opt-out approach on Apple's end. Force the user to make a cognitive choice here with a clear understanding of what their choice means. Communication is key.

Some users may very well appreciate and value the hyper-relevant advertisements they see on services, and remain opted-in to the sharing of tracking data.

I personally know many people who have bought many things they value greatly that they discovered through advertisements on various social networks.

At the end of the day, it should be the choice of the user; not the system (Apple/iOS, Google/Android, etc.) or the relying third parties (Facebook, etc.)

barkerja··on App privacy labels now live on the App Store
It does say that, but it's also a very clear and bold "Data Not Collected"

See screenshot: https://share.barkerja.dev/4vgEhw.jpeg

barkerja··on App privacy labels now live on the App Store
They do, actually. If you look up the Halide camera app, you'll see a great example of this.
barkerja··on Google has removed the option to disable autoplay from Mobile Chrome
Not sure what you're referring to, but Safari has three configurable options for auto-play:

- Allow All Auto-Play

- Stop Media with Sound

- Never Auto-Play

This can be configured on a global level, or on a site-by-site basis.

barkerja··on Decision for 2020-21 Academic Year
We've had nearly 3 million cases with over 130k fatalities. If the numbers are being grossly underreported, then it's certainly possible the mortality rate is < 1%, but given the numbers we have now, our mortality rate is closer to 4.5%.
barkerja··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
They don't, the user controls this. When the user authorizes the client, they have the option to share their actual Apple ID email or use an obfuscated one.

Apple isn't forcing anything here.

barkerja··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
This applies to any SSO.
barkerja··on Is WebP really better than JPEG?
WEBP support has been added to the next version of Safari (14).
barkerja··on Japanese man tests positive for coronavirus again
https://www.hopkinsguides.com/hopkins/view/Johns_Hopkins_ABX...

> Preliminary evidence suggests two strains of SARS-2-CoV circulating: one associated with milder illness (~30%), the other with severe illness (70%).

barkerja··on GitHub for mobile is now available
I believe that org restriction applies only to third-party application. This app is a first-party app.
barkerja··on Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance to develop connectivity standard
That's a bold statement. Anecdotally, I know of no one that relies entirely on mobile connectivity for their home.

While mobile internet may be becoming faster, it's still severely hindered by data caps and throttling.

barkerja··on My Experience as a Remote Worker
Personally, I find having a space dedicated to work helps tremendously with this. When I am in my "office" at home, I am working. When I leave the office, I am not working.

Having that separation helps me "leave work" when it is technically at the same location. It does also require a good bit of discipline because it is easy to slip back into work at any point in the day.

Many argue that you should "work when you feel like it" but I personally find that leads to burn out. If I can keep a regiment that I don't deviate much/at all from, I am mentally healthier.

barkerja··on Disney: Bob Iger bets the company (and Hollywood's future) on streaming
I don't know if I'd go as far to say it's worse. Cable forced one's hand into paying for things they didn't necessarily want. At least with this model, we the consumer have the ability to pick and choose exactly what we want to pay for.

If a network has shows that look appealing to you, subscribe for a couple months. If there's only one show that looks appealing, buy it on iTunes.

We're never going to have an affordable, legal, pay-once-for-everything model.

barkerja··on Apple iOS 13.1 Personal automation via Shortcuts
I don't think it's so much a privacy concern (it certainly is), but more with regards to accidental triggers by actions that are passive and flaky.

Location accuracy isn't always the greatest, particularly indoors; in-and-out connections to wifi/bluetooth are possible when you're on the fringe of its range.

These issues need to be addressed in some form before _true_ automation is given to them.

barkerja··on Apple iOS 13.1 Personal automation via Shortcuts
That's true about the potential for bad actor, but it's also true for many false positives.

Passive automations based on location, bluetooth, wifi, etc. stand a good chance of many accidental triggers. Connections are flaky, location accuracy is flaky; without some form of throttling mechanism or way to better control accidental firings, it should remain manual.

barkerja··on Colorado Town Offers 1 Gbps for $60 After Years of Battling Comcast
My little village (around ~1200 people I believe) in Central New York is currently exploring its own municipality owned internet. They sent out surveys to all the residents a few months back to see if there's a large enough interest.
barkerja··on Gitlab More Than Doubles Valuation to $2.75B Ahead of Planned 2020 IPO
Heh, in a way. But I do give a lot of credit to Github for exposing me to some really cool and interesting projects. It does a decent job of knowing what I consider relevant, and surfacing projects/humans that fit the bill.
barkerja··on Gitlab More Than Doubles Valuation to $2.75B Ahead of Planned 2020 IPO
I'm not currently using Gitlab anymore, but in the past, it was their CI that won me over. I was always felt left wanting more though because there wasn't a true sense of community/explore.

If there's one thing I value most about Github today it's the ability to easily discover new projects and human beings; and Github helps tremendously with that whereas Gitlab I feel like you end up fighting the system to discover new and interesting things and people.

barkerja··on Effortless Elixir Releases and Deployment
First time I'm hearing of this community; first glance, it looks great! However, I was trying to check out the content in the footer, but the scrolling pagination makes it impossible. :(
barkerja··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again
Any time I'm about to go through security, I long-press the volume and side buttons which immmediately activates the requirement for passcode to unlock.

It's a quick and easy shortcut to enable the passcode requirement.

barkerja··on AT&T loses nearly 1M TV customers after raising DirecTV prices
We have Spectrum's stream-only service (using the Apple TV). Overall, it's been decent for local channels and a few "premium" channels -- at least for the price we pay (all local channels, 10 premium channels and HBO/Showtime for $15/month).

I agree that the format is stale, but for some, it's a good form of "background noise"; my wife loves to have the TV on even if she isn't watching it, while reading, studying, etc.

There's also no other real choice if you want live content (primarily for sports). You still need access to your local affiliate channels to watch this content, and for some, an antenna is not good enough or even an option at all.

barkerja··on DuckDuckGo Expands Use of Apple Maps
There's an option to report previous navigations. It breaks the route down step-by-step and lets you correct and report each one.

In addition to reporting wrong directions, you can also report the arrival entrance (ex: moving the pin into a parking lot vs. the entrance to the parking lot)

barkerja··on Sequel Pro – Open source macOS native MySQL GUI client

barkerja··on FCC Authorizes SpaceX to Provide Broadband Satellite Services
It wouldn't be a wise decision; what if they one day decide to enter into live programming (sports, news, etc.), where latency does matter?
