barista··on Steven Sinofsky to Leave Microsoft
Or selling too well and causing the Microsoft partners to make some noise.
barista··on Samsung Galaxy S3 stores passwords in plain text

barista··on Apple fires up its version of Google’s "20% time"
Good for the people who work there but to me this looks like yet another sign where apple is becoming like the "other companies". No longer think different.
barista··on Microsoft turns spoken English into spoken Mandarin – in the same voice
The big question is when do we see this in a real product. Many interesting innovations have come out of Microsoft research. It will be nice if they reach end users as well
barista··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
Actually as an app developer I see this as a huge monetization opportunity to me. With a huge installed base of Windows, if I get my app running on some those with the ads powering my app? It's a mouth watering proposition.
barista··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
What search engine do you use?
barista··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
No gmail man but how about amazon kindle? They come with ads too and last I checked you still have to pay money to buy one.
barista··on Apple awarded design patent for actual rounded rectangle
I bet they could not get a patent for rounded square, or squircle, because Zune already had it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zune_Pad
barista··on Microsoft's Sinofsky responds to complaint over Office 2013 on Surface RT
Brent, if only you'd have bothered to check and for and install updates before writing such a diatribe, your experience would have been different... hope you are enjoying your surface now. I know I am.
barista··on Microsoft's Sinofsky responds to complaint over Office 2013 on Surface RT
Google does that Apple has done that too. Get a new Galaxy tab and watch in wonder how many applications get updated over next few hours or so. What use is the ability to update software OTA if the users are not delivered quick incremental updates?
barista··on AnandTech: Microsoft Surface Review
>> Maybe MS haven't given a lot of time for people to spend with the product.

I remember to have read that he was playing with the device for almost 3 weeks. That's seems long enough.

barista··on AnandTech: Microsoft Surface Review
I don't get why you think the article did not say anything about the tablet. It did review and compare various aspects of it such as the performance, display, battery life with other tablets on the market.

It did not cover the software in details but I think that is the part of the review. Windows 8 by itself has been covered in detail elsewhere.

barista··on Under the hood of Windows 8, or why desktop users should upgrade from Windows 7
While there are many enterprises that have willingly adopted the iPhone and later iPad in their organizations. The lost productivity due to a different UI is a misconception. What is important is legacy application support which I think continues to be there in Windows 8.
barista··on Under the hood of Windows 8, or why desktop users should upgrade from Windows 7
Yes they are a bit different. I love the swipe from edges on Windows 8. Hope it comes to Windows phone someday.
barista··on Apple announces iPad Mini with a 7.9-inch, 1,024 x 768 display - $329
That has always been Apple forte. Create value by advertising
barista··on [dead]
There is already a thread about it being down because problems with AWS. Not sure this warrants another thread on HN. Maybe once we know the technical reason behind it, we can discuss more?
barista··on Marc Benioff: "Windows 8 is the end of Windows"
The chart you posted was about revenues not profits. Same argument applies to Amazon also but they are at least making some profit. The strategy of pursuing revenue and growth only makes sense for so long. At some point you have to cash that user base and make money.
barista··on Marc Benioff: "Windows 8 is the end of Windows"
He is better off making sure that his company is not facing the end soon. For a company that is in business for almost a decade, they are yet to turn a profit.
barista··on A Letter from Tim Cook on Maps
One bad experience can change the perception.

Interesting snub at Google by recommending Bing maps over Google :)

barista··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
Must be. Because anything Microsoft does better especially in the areas of security must be flawed or propaganda </sarcasm>
barista··on IE9 is better at blocking malware than Chrome, Safari, and Firefox combined
That is not true. It is based more on reputation. May be you should first learn more about it before spreading misinformation : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2011/05/17/smartscreen-17...
barista··on Google's "iLost" Motorola ad faked an address to "lose" iOS 6 Maps
If Google owns the entity then Google better be behind these campaigns
barista··on Google's "iLost" Motorola ad faked an address to "lose" iOS 6 Maps
Just checked and Bing gets it too!
barista··on Lumia 920 low-light shootout with iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III
and the best screen and the best OS too...
barista··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
Actually it is possible to show the benefits of OIS without video. It allows you to use longer shutter speeds when taking pictures in low light. Take a look at this one:

barista··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
920 has rounded edges that make it comfortable to hold. the sharp (jewel like!!) edges of iphone make it uncomfortable. Lumia 900 is very similar in how it feels in hand. Give it a shot and decide for yourself.
barista··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
so you are convinced that Apple used siri in all those commercials they show?
barista··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
read the message above you. The lenses have different focal length. 920 gives you broader field of view so you can get wider picture and more light. iPhone doesn't. That's why iPhone looks zoomed in.
barista··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
I doubt I'd call it faked. Would you call siri ads faked? Everybody who has used it can vouch that it just doesn't work let alone in noisy downtown.

It was a promo video used when revealing a product (not an ad broadcast on TV) that was trying to prove a point that OIS is important and can make pictures and videos look beautiful. The verge and all other sites that did the detective work was purely for the sake of page views. No substance there...
