bargainbin··on Wikimedia Foundation Challenges UK Online Safety Act Regulations
No one asked for this. Don’t blame parents. This is the government using the Four Horsemen of the Infocalypse to restrict your personal freedoms.
bargainbin··on Pony: An actor-model, capabilities-secure, high-performance programming language
Highly recommend you give it a go! Good community, great libraries and the language itself is just bonkers performant without even trying.
bargainbin··on VPN use surges in UK as new online safety rules kick in
The police aren’t going to raid you for using Tor any more than they would for you using a VPN.
bargainbin··on Show HN: Use Their ID – Use your local UK MP’s ID for the Online Safety Act
Just like any other interaction with your local MP…
bargainbin··on Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share in USA
Would just like to add it’s not needed so much now. I’m a pretty avid gamer and I’ve been using Bazzite as my OS now for months without issue.

Proton has completely changed the game (pun not intended). All that’s really missing now is the big studios who won’t release their anticheat for Linux.

bargainbin··on Retail cyber attacks: NCA arrest four for attacks on M&S, Co-op and Harrods
This doesn’t surprise me. I work for a company that hires a substantial headcount from TCS, probably one of their biggest clients, and the quality of the work is astonishingly bad.

I’d recommend avoiding at all costs but we all know these companies are brought in by non-technical people.

bargainbin··on Deno 2.4
Deno is a JS runtime (written in Rust) on the V8 engine.

What’s horrible about V8?

bargainbin··on The Bleach Community Is Ready for RFK Jr. To Make Their Dreams Come True
> Chlorine dioxide is sold under a variety of names, including … God’s Detox.

My biggest criticism of Darwinism is that it takes generations.

bargainbin··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings
100% this. As some who’s regularly derided by his colleagues for “hating meetings”: I don’t “keep meetings to a minimum”, I “keep meetings to a benefit”.

If I’ve called a meeting it’s because there’s a benefit to the instant vocal communication. If you’re not there, you’ve not attended the meeting, no matter which tools you use to record, transcribe or translate.

Conversely, if I thought I didn’t need to be in a meeting, then I wouldn’t send a tool to gather stuff for me to then just ignore the tool output - because I don’t need it.

These tools are a sign of cultural rot from both participants and the fact people are even making them shows deep flaws in how we communicate in the modern workplace.

bargainbin··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
Likely means S3 compatibility so it can be used with anything, be it a cloud provider or a locally hosted solution like minio
bargainbin··on As AI kills search traffic, Google launches Offerwall to boost publisher revenue
I can already see how this plays out, it falls flat, the increasing decline in search coincides with industry wide realisation LLMs still can’t achieve AGI, this sets alarm bells ringing, they offer a new system for advertisers to promote content via the AI responses since now “it’s just glorified search”
bargainbin··on Show HN: A color name API that maps hex to the closest human-readable name
"Safety Orange" is quite apt!
bargainbin··on Guess I'm a Rationalist Now

bargainbin··on Brain activity much lower when using AI chatbots, MIT boffins find
Tool that gains popularity for reducing cognitive load is found to reduce cognitive load. Shocker.

I expect better from El Reg.

bargainbin··on Working on databases from prison
The key delineation here is the work is voluntary. I was uneasy reading the article and weighing it up, realised that the author could choose not to work whilst he serves time.

If he was being coerced into labour however, which the for-profit prison undoubtedly makes profit from, it’s simply unacceptable; indentured servitude, slavery, call it what you will, it’s bad for society in every way because it allows the ruling class to steal labour from the working class under the guise of “rehabilitation”.

bargainbin··on In case of emergency, break glass
I don’t understand how a company that has effectively defined modern interfaces, which has the clout to hire the best of the best, has resulted in this.

I fear the apple is starting to rot on the inside.

bargainbin··on What you need to know about EMP weapons
Anyone using that exercise in melodramatics as their basis for probability of nuclear war deserves to be laughed it and subsequently ignored.
bargainbin··on Learn touch typing – it's worth it
I had same issue and it’s ultimately what killed the Moonlander for me - I dedicated time to get better at touch typing (I already do it from years of chatting in games) and dialling in a layout that worked for how I use computers.

Only to find that I’m mostly using other people’s computers when they call me over to help, and suddenly I’m mashing my meaty paws all over their MacBook as they look on in horror that this supposed technical professional can’t even press the shift key reliably.

bargainbin··on Postgres IDE in VS Code
Yeah I’ve been using it since it was released and can’t ever remember it being marketed as such.
bargainbin··on TypeScript Native Previews
They’re delivering this so quickly. 72 seconds down to 6 is a remarkable improvement, considering it’s not yet complete and assuming they haven’t spent concerted effort optimising it to perfection.
bargainbin··on A Research Preview of Codex
I have this issue with Devin. Given my limited knowledge of how these work, I believe there is simply too much context for it to take a holistic view of the task and finish accordingly.

If both OpenAI and Devin are falling into the same pattern then that’s a good indication there’s a fundamental problem to be solved here.

bargainbin··on Persuasion methods for engineering managers
Something irked me about this post as a long term EM, and then reading the final part actually provided the clarity: The author is a sociopath.

Stalking your superiors is insane. Most of the behaviour here is insane. Decoy cup size? Present the option that is best for the business and be done with it.

This is a sign of a sick company.

bargainbin··on DJ With Apple Music launches to enable subscribers to mix their own sets
Overly nihilistic view. As someone who was a working nightclub DJ for 5 years, these kind of tools lower the barrier for entry into the hobby and trade and also serve as a great backup plan.

It’s not intended as a replacement to a curated collection of white labels, bootlegs and edits which you build up and over years.

bargainbin··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
Because the wealth is unequal, sure, but look at how much better the human quality of life is compared to even 50 years ago.

What is wealth when everyone is fed, watered and entertained?

Only stating this as an explanation to why there has not been a civil revolution. People are still dying in poverty with no way to escape every day, and we need to address it.

bargainbin··on Tell HN: Y Combinator backing AI company to abuse factory workers
So you’d be ok with this AI being applied to other industries? Maybe lines of code?
bargainbin··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
I’m full in on Apple and hoped they nuked iCloud in the UK for this rather than compromise the product.

This is still better than a back door but it sets an awful precedent.

bargainbin··on AI killed the tech interview. Now what?
When I joined my current team I found they had changed the technical test after I had interviewed but before I joined. A couple of friends also applied and got rejected because of this new test.

When I finally got in the door and joined the hiring effort I was appalled to find they’d implemented a leetcode-esque series of challenges with criteria such as “if the candidate doesn’t immediately identify and then use a stack then fail interview”. There were 7 more like this with increasingly harsh criteria.

I would not have passed.

bargainbin··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
They’ve got the weird shit covered still, apparently the joy cons in this gen can be used as mice.

Was heavily rumoured/leaked and this teaser video literally shows them gliding along a surface.

How Nintendo will leverage that functionality, who could honestly say, but that’s the genius of keeping a toy company mindset in an industry full of sports car company mindsets.

bargainbin··on A couple CSS tricks for HTML Dialog elements
It does make you wonder, Safari recently had a burst in features where they modernised and even overtook Chromium/FF in some features, and then in the past year or so it’s languishing again.

I do wonder if the metrics show the average person downloads Chrome straight away so they’re just not investing heavily in it? I mean anyway, who browses traditional websites any more, right…?
