baremetal··on Farming technologies tackle climate-change threats
Converting single family lawns into small gardens would do more to help with climate change than these ideas.

So much pollution is generated by industrial farming and transportation of the food to city folk.

Everyone who is _serious_ about helping with climate change should be willing to put in a little sweat equity.

Sadly I do not see that as the case. Much easier to talk about it, and insist other people make changes or sacrifices than to make them oneself.

baremetal··on Overwhelmed by what should I learn?
If I was you I would start with javascript and worry about the rest of the stuff later.

Learn things as you need them, to achieve specific goals.

baremetal··on Reversal of social media guardrails could prove disastrous for 2024 elections
>Increasing misinformation on social media, platforms scaling back content moderation and the rise of AI are converging to create a perfect storm for the 2024 elections that some experts warn could put democracy at risk.

TFA seems to be saying "You can't be trusted to come to your own conclusions. We must censor."

I disagree.

Censorship is dangerous to our democracy.

War is not peace. Ignorance is not strength.

baremetal··on Ask HN: Are there any safe alternatives to coffee for all-day sipping?

Beer

baremetal··on Taurine deficiency as a driver of aging
In reality, I try to minimize my exposure to known carcinogens.

This one is quite avoidable.

baremetal··on Taurine deficiency as a driver of aging
Sucralose found in common sweetener damages DNA, may cause cancer [1]

baremetal··on Ask HN: What would you do if you had the summer off as a technologist?
I learned carpentry and gardening.

Very grounding. Still requires mental acuity but gives you the opportunity to use different parts of your brain, and it rounds you out as a person.

Very grounding and it has been good for my mental (and physical!) health too.

baremetal··on Ask HN: How to Homeowner?
Drain your water heater every 3 months or so. Change out the sacrificial anode once a year.
baremetal··on Ask HN: What are you working on?(Non-software projects only)
In Idaho.

And no permit was pulled, building codes are fairly relaxed out in the country.

baremetal··on Ask HN: What are you working on?(Non-software projects only)
I'm building a half acre permaculture pond.

It's about 10 foot deep at the center. And should hold somewhere between 300k-600k gallons of water.

I dug it out with a backhoe. You wouldn't believe how scary it is driving a backhoe, it feels like you are gonna tip over at any moment.

baremetal··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
>and I realise that there's increasingly huge amounts of information out there on sites that Google may have crawled before and knows about, but doesn't want to show me for some reason.

I wonder what that reason could be.

baremetal··on Ask HN: What's your favorite stack for personal projects?
Rails
baremetal··on 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Tick Up as Inflation Stays High
Build your own home. Just do something simple like a gable roof 20x50 or something small to start you can always add to it.

In the meantime pickup an RV and live on the land. Used RV's should be cheaper right now.

baremetal··on 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Tick Up as Inflation Stays High
The way things are going, its possible that the farmstead lifestyle will be one of the highest standards of living available to the common man.

The alternative might be living in 800sf apartments in a 15 minute city eating whatever food is on offer. Living through screens all day. Perhaps their kids will enjoy that way of life more than the sun on their face on a May afternoon with birds chirping in a field of grass wet with dew petting their livestock.

baremetal··on 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Tick Up as Inflation Stays High
Just cool yourself out for a minute bro. We are all friends here.

>your retirement plan must involve children or some community inheriting it and taking care of you in your old age.

My farmland pays a rent dividend on the order of 2-4%/yr and I don't even have to be there or even show up to collect it.

I bought my farmland because I consider it doing my part to preserve the planet. I'm a big believer in the future of locally produced food and more local communities in reducing emissions and _corporate wastefulness_. As a side benefit it will preserve my standard of living. I thoroughly enjoy steak and so do a lot of other people. Livestock, land, and gold have preserved wealth since ancient times.

baremetal··on AI Is an Insult Now
This is a specious argument. AI is not a species. What drives this need to deify AI?
baremetal··on How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul
I don't use my phone for anything but calls and texts, and occasionally looking something up.

I meditate or engage with people standing while in lines.

If I'm gonna spend time on a computer I do it on a laptop at home. All my HN browsing is on a laptop.

I keep the phone in a separate room.

I don't give myself the slack to spend time looking at my phone. Its a waste of time anyway and I end up missing out on life.

baremetal··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
You can grow surplus food in the yard of a single family dwelling. No one has to move anywhere.
baremetal··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
No need to have to grow all their own food, any kind of a supplement at all is a positive.

Plenty of single family dwellings with grass yards.

And time commitments/work involved? I guess they aren't serious about climate change. This just reinforces my original point. Screeching about climate change but unwilling to do any of the work or make any _real_ sacrifices.

It only takes a few hours a week to operate a backyard garden that produces more than even a large family can consume.

baremetal··on Ask HN: How to cope with pressure to be the best?
Trying to win every time is getting trapped in a local maxima. Sometimes you learn more taking the low man position. Sometimes that is the only way to learn certain things. If you are truly trying to optimize you will drop the premature optimization that is trying to be number 1 all the time in everything.

Optimize for learning not status.

baremetal··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
Then why aren't you pushing the "grow your own food" mantra rather than the "get rid of fossil fuels" mantra. We wouldn't need such volumes of liquid fuels if not for industrial agriculture and transportation of food. That seems like much lower hanging fruit than eliminating fossil fuels.
baremetal··on ‘Massive’ Tesla leak reveals data breaches, thousands of safety complaints
Sizeable trades face scrutiny especially in light of leaks. Would be pretty obvious if someone bought a lot of puts right before a leak. And that is just a singular event. If they had a habit of doing that...
baremetal··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
>No one cares if the dakotas don’t ban them if no one will build them for just their market.

New producers of diesel vehicles would show up to cater to those markets. Econ 101.

>Think in systems. Find lynch pins and apply maximum force. It’s either a climate emergency or it’s not, and if it is, treat it like an emergency.

Very emotionally charged rhetoric there. That kind of action would result in bifurcation of the market. Balkanization. Separate economies. That sort of thing.

baremetal··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
Every time i see such emotionally charged language about what we must sacrifice for the environment I think "there is no way this person grows any of their own food". That is the kind of change and sacrifice that needs to be made.
baremetal··on Ask HN: How do you deal with large Python code bases?
That method works well for initially building the system too. Start in the db and model the relationships and then move up.
baremetal··on How do I stop thinking about projects?
Meditation.
baremetal··on Ask HN: How do you have fun?
Learning something new is fun to me.

New challenges.

Every-day-as-a-choose-your-own-adventure results in asymptotic-fun[1].

[1]Describes a philosophical approach to life that emphasizes continuous growth and improvement in one's capacity [for enjoyment], without any theoretical upper limit.

baremetal··on What web tech stack are folks choosing for seed stage startups today?
Rails

Or the obligatory "the stack you already know".

Worrying about your tech stack is one of those procrastination traps like fiddling with your development environment too much rather than writing code.
