baremetal··on Office real estate crash will be so sharp, values unlikely to recover by 2040
Are you joking or serious?

We have had multiple bank failures this year. And so many banks are holding large amounts of commercial real estate and also long term bonds they can't mark to market without suffering monster losses.

baremetal··on Office real estate crash will be so sharp, values unlikely to recover by 2040
I don't think most people fully grasp what is likely coming down the pike.

Normalcy bias is a helluva drug.

Having remodeled commercial buildings I can say adding plumbing to a finished commercial building is a nightmare.
baremetal··on Will lower birth rates affect the infrastructure of cities?
You would be surprised what you can learn given sufficient curiosity, time, and resources.

I don't work a 9-5 job most years, and I don't have dependents or a mortgage.

And also I would take jobs as an apprentice for 6 months and I would ask lots of questions and do research on the side to maximize the learning. Treat it like a college course: read the book before, and watch videos. Meet people in other trades and ask them stuff. People are quite willing to share knowledge if you show an eagerness.

Basically immersion learning.

baremetal··on Will lower birth rates affect the infrastructure of cities?
Rural areas still have high rates of family formation and child birth.

And self-sufficiency is highly valued.

Cities will have trouble getting service providers to do electrical, plumbing, hvac, roofing, etc. They already do have trouble with this things.

baremetal··on Will lower birth rates affect the infrastructure of cities?
I'm inclined to agree.

That's why I moved away from major population centers and I am setting up my own private infrastructure on defensible ground. And I learned how to do my own plumbing, electrical, carpentry, food production etc. And I plan on having a lot of kids.

Care to share what problems you personally think will arise?

>It's orders of magnitude less destructive.

Citation needed.

I'm not sure you've ever been around industrial scale mono-cropping agriculture. The amount of pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides is astronomical.

And you are worried about a little cow poop? Which is natural and beneficial to the soil? Have you ever heard of regenerative agriculture? That is what I practice.

We live in such an alarmist society one can read a few headlines and think the world is going to end. Or think they are educated about a topic.

baremetal··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
Corn subsidies also go to producing ethanol. Which is arguable a gigantic waste when compared to using it for animal feed. Roughly 40% of corn is used to produce ethanol[1]

Chickens turn kitchen waste and other garbage into nutrient dense eggs.

I raise chickens and feed them my kitchen and yard waste. They also eat bugs.

Two chicken eggs can power me all day.

Reason about that "trophic energy loss [gain]".

China is permitting 2 new coal plants a week[1]. Yet it's cow flatulence that is the problem.

How people get convinced to act against their own self interest I'll never understand.

I bought farmland and raise my own beef because of this type of thinking.

Absolutely, _no one_ is gonna control whether I eat beef or not.

baremetal··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
>Much of the land use for raising animals would not become a lush forest if left alone. There's a reason it is being used for animals and not crops.

With scrub land, that is about the only agricultural use for it. Putting cows on arid scrub land turns useless land into useful land. It's so easy to falsely reason about agriculture when one is so far removed from it.

>What's the ultimate purpose? To subsist using the minimal amount of resources?

That is the ultimate purpose to reduce the standard of living of the poor and middle class.

baremetal··on Ask HN: Has the Internet Become Too Intellectual?
> That is, the implicit assumption that all conversation on the web (and increasingly real life) is a formal debate, where every participant is an expert on every subject. It's odious and a hinderance to real discussion.

Perhaps this is caused by a general lack of humility and compassion for ones fellow man. A desire to be right over the desire to learn something new or share ones' knowledge for the benefit of others.

Ah I missed that detail, my apologies :)
baremetal··on We need more of Richard Stallman's ideas, not less
>The "problem" is that when this purist meritocratic approach has been tried, it results in more white men being hired, not less.

What an ignorant and bigoted thing to say. Next your gonna say the same thing about Asians.

Meritocracy is blind to race and focuses solely on aptitude. The fact you don't like the outcome says more about you than about meritocracy.

baremetal··on Bullshit Jobs (2018)
>As an Anarchist, it's my job to support the dissolution of any hierarchy that is not democratically operated in a way that supports people attempting to live while also creating communities founded on democratic incentives.

Can you elaborate on this point?

>You prefer to just leave organization to the loudest capitalist leaders?

I'm inclined to agree with you that that is a bad idea.

baremetal··on Ask HN: What are you working on this weekend?
I will be restoring my newly purchased antique tractor. And framing an addition to the barn so I have somewhere to park it.
baremetal··on Stop Calling Each New Disaster “The New Normal”
Meanwhile China is bringing on a new coal plant every week. Actually, 2 new plants a week [1]. But you suggest we stop selling gas to people.

baremetal··on Ask HN: How can a BE/infra developer handle the FE side of personal projects?
>I’ve been using Hotwire, stimulus and bootstrap... on top of rails

This is what I use as well. As a backend guy, it makes front end development a breeze.

baremetal··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
Pretty sure giant tech organizations can entirely work from home, as witnessed by the past several years.

Your argument is a non-sequitur.

And many large retail firms have closed down and left. I can produce citations if needed.

baremetal··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
You are correct there are very few people living on small farms. Most people in rural areas live in small towns, are very poor, and yes transportation is an issue. Many should and do move to cities to find more opportunity.

Why is your land unfarmable? Is it dry land?

baremetal··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
>Are there multiple acts of terrorism a week, caused by plain-clothes insurgents?

Gang shootings every day?

>Are pensioners lining up on Market Street every day, to try to sell strangers their fur coats and toasters and jewelry

No the pensioners couldn't afford to live there and moved out. You have immigrant people selling [stolen] toasters and shampoo on the street.

>Has life expectancy dropped by a decade or so?

Life expectancy is significantly shorter for a large segment of the population via overdose, because lawlessness pervades.

> Are the schools and universities open?

Yes I believe SF has reopened schools again, finally.

You have masses of people living on the street in tents. And rampant open air drug use and sale. Lawlessness. I suggest you re-evaluate what you are willing to tolerate.

baremetal··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
If you have masses of people living in tents on the street and open air drug markets.. people shooting drugs in the street. That is lawlessness.

Even many third world locales don't have those issues.

So yes it is a reasonable definition.

baremetal··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
>Rural living gets constantly gassed up as this incredibly serene, peaceful place to live

It is indeed peaceful. It is just a lot of physical work and being in the sun. At least half the year or so.

Lots of people are leaving the cities. Many of the major cities in the US fit the definition of a failed state. Including SF.

"A failed state is a state that has lost its effective ability to govern its populace. A failed state maintains legal sovereignty but experiences a breakdown in political power, law enforcement, and civil society, leading to a state of near-anarchy." [1]

baremetal··on That’s a huge amount of energy being transferred to the atmosphere
>Avoiding meat and dairy is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth

I grow my own food and meat. I think growing your own food is the single biggest way to reduce your impact on Earth. All that industrial farming and transportation required to feed people. So many people living in single family homes could turn their lawns into gardens and produce _surplus_ vegetables. Several times what their family can eat.

And even people in dense urban areas could have community gardens ie rooftop gardens.

It seems popular to want solutions that doesn't involve any sweat equity. Which I find unfortunate, at best.

baremetal··on Farming technologies tackle climate-change threats
>Most people don’t have very much of a yard, and even a relatively large garden, say a fifth of an acre is not going to replace much industrial farming.

Even 1/5 of an acre or less will yield more produce than your family and several neighbors families can eat.

I speak from experience. Till composted steer manure into the soil. Lots and lots. Every year.

baremetal··on Ask HN: As a developer, do you consider the carbon footprint of your apps?
>I do not care about the future of humanity and nature, I try to live as hedonistic as I can and do not desire being a father.

Perhaps I'm being presumptuous but it sounds like you are in a state of hopelessness.

I will pray for you.

baremetal··on Grocery Mergers? Not So Good

baremetal··on Ask HN: As a developer, do you consider the carbon footprint of your apps?

Ideological capture.

You have been convinced to act against your own self interest.

> contractors for my neighbor just dumped a shitload of old asphalt and cement shingles on my 80 sqft garden

You should go talk to the contractor. He needs to clean that up.

>but I think it’s a relatively small part of the climate change equation.

No one wants to discuss Chinese and Indian emissions. Instead we are resigned to demonizing cow farts.
