barce··on Maru OS – A complete desktop experience on a smartphone
Yeah, but these would never work with VR. The moment phones became capable of delivering smooth VR, i.e. smooth graphics, the phone PC became a strong possibility for quotidian tasks.
barce··on E. B. White, the Art of the Essay No. 1 (1969)
Because the most successful blogging is not writing for people, it is writing for machines. The most successful bloggers understand that using keywords to trigger algorithms that lead to higher rankings is key. This is not literature by any stretch. I would read a periodical that dedicated itself to fine blog writing with critiques from a human and machine perspective, though.
barce··on The first woman to finish the Boston Marathon in 1967 has run it again at age 70
Unequal pay for the same work solely based on gender.
barce··on This Is the Mindfulness App Apple Doesn’t Want You to Have
And we should trust you because?
barce··on This Is the Mindfulness App Apple Doesn’t Want You to Have
I'm really not sure why this article got flagged. I'd say that Apple's PR reads Hacker News, too.
barce··on This Is the Mindfulness App Apple Doesn’t Want You to Have
This wouldn't be the first time they have been played given whom they've interviewed: a dishonored Nixon, a cadre of tobacco executives, and a bunch of confabulators from the US customs who claimed no drug trafficking between US and Mexico.
barce··on Why I will not exercise my GitLab stock options
Yet, at the same time I would think twice before working at gitlab now. I feel the CEO or HR should have had an NDA in place with a generous severance. Also, I would be hesitant about hiring the engineer. He was given a great challenge, but instead of rising to it, he made up excuses about needing mentorship. At the very least, he could've generalized the problem, and made an open source library as leverage for finding an even better job. Yes, he still might've gotten fired, but at least he'd have a tool he could call his own.
barce··on Foucault’s work on power
For example?
barce··on Foucault’s work on power
Why wouldn't power in the non-physics sense not have meaning? Why are you restricting meaning, and thus truth, to just physics? In order to even participate in this forum doesn't meaning, and thus, truth, require a broader definition?
barce··on Foucault’s work on power
The first page of "Discipline and Punish" is a very clear description of the drawing and quartering of a regicide. I am not sure what nuggets you are referring to. Citations, please. I think he is arguing against "whittling... down to their core common sense origins," because such origins are illusory.
barce··on Foucault’s work on power
I think you misread the article. Foucault's point is that there are many ways of seeing power. "Foucault sought to unburden philosophy of its icy gaze of capturing essences."
barce··on [dead]
Nothing in this suggests sociopathy to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopathy#Sociopathy 1) You really should just do startups with folks that are solid friends to begin with, and even then you will have disagreements. 2) She is not a sociopath, but worse. On your account she wanted to pivot on a non-existent product. She simply was not your peer.
barce··on Snap Inc. S-1
For comparison, Facebook had 3500 employees at the time of their IPO, and it's "just a website." Snapchat is many products: video ad platform, augmented reality selfie app, broadcast platform via sunglasses, photo uploading app, and messaging app.
barce··on Add Reactions to Pull Requests, Issues, and Comments
I think thoughtful comments with advice on how to refactor is a way better indicator than giving my PRs over to the mob. Ya thumbs down or any reaction with code is a mistake.
barce··on Ask HN: What should I learn right now to keep my programming skills current?
How has React been for you? Have you had to rewrite a Rails or PHP app in React?
barce··on Ask HN: What should I learn right now to keep my programming skills current?
Solid chapter on asynchrony! I really find the "Review" section at the end to be useful and tying concepts together. Yeah, I need to learn more core JavaScript.
barce··on Why Open Offices Are Terrible
Yeah, that would be an important article to write. I think the compromise where everyone "wins" with the open office is more inter-team communication.
barce··on Why Open Offices Are Terrible
I guess if I used Google the way this author did, I could write an article called, "Why Open Offices Are Great."
barce··on How to detect lies with a storytelling technique
This is seriously flawed for folks that suffer memory degradation under stress. tl;dr: the guy with amnesia is the liar.
barce··on Show HN: Legion Analytics – Using Data to Find the Right Customer
I wish I could down vote this. This feels really spammy and not in the spirit of a "Show HN." Show HN, IMHO, is about sharing code or processes that other people can use that solve a problem. This is just an ad.
barce··on Who’s Doing the Talking on Twitter?
But great for URLs to technical database questions. :)
barce··on I am Mt. Gox's first employee – AMA
Ya, MtGox had people's savings in it. I really feel sorry for them and hope Mark's arrest and trial give them some justice even though they won't be made financially whole again.

barce··on Some Functional Programmers Are Arrogant
Where's the data? If the data is the tweets cited and googling 'Functional Programming Arrogant', then it's definitely a hasty generalization (the community is open) of a hasty generalization (the community is arrogant).
barce··on What Is Code?
It should make sense that this article & VP exists. 7 billion people in the world and only 11 million professionally code, and 7 million are hobby coders, according to the author of the article and the IDC.

After auditing the software of at least 20 different startups, I'd have to say there will always be people in positions of power who know nothing. Just look at our politicians.

barce··on Mobile app startups are failing like it’s 1999
The publish date is in the source code.
barce··on Mobile app startups are failing like it’s 1999
I know that the date of this article has been outed, but if you view the source, that's another way to get the date:

barce··on Ask HN: Which domain name registration service should I use for my startup?
Thanks, I definitely did not think of looking at the trademark section first.
barce··on Start doing more things alone
Ya, I agree with you. I have to call bullshit on the part that says, "In the fifth, Ratner and Hamilton put the preferences to the test by gauging whether people actually enjoyed visiting an art gallery more when they were in the company of others, compared to when they were alone."

I used to have a museum membership so I could go everyday for free if I wanted to. I often went every other day just to get coffee, or to use the free wifi for work. It was subjectively a very different experience than being with someone.

I am pretty sure if you measured something like endorphins or blood pressure, you'd see there was more enjoyment with someone than without. There are tons of studies that already do this, e.g. the ones written up by UCSF profs in "A General Theory of Love."

barce··on Facebook Is Shutting Down Its API for Giving Your Friends’ Data to Apps
Sorry about your app. It does definitely creates an opportunity for a birthday API free of Facebook.
barce··on Less Noise but More Money in Data Science
By at least a few centuries. I found this tidbit on candlestick charts in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homma_Munehisa It turns out that sort of chart was invented in the 18th century.
