barbacoa··on It's time to repeal the Patriot Act and dismantle the surveillance state
People like to blame the Patriot Act but a large amount of the domestic surveillance is done under the authorization of the 2008 fisa amendment.
barbacoa··on PinePhone Pro Announced

Why are projects like this starting from scratch and not forking from the abandoned Ubuntu phone OS?

barbacoa··on Strict Id Laws Don’t Stop Voters: Evidence from a U.S. Nationwide Panel
> refuse to accept college IDs as valid for voting, even those issued by the state government because it's a state school (college students are more likely to vote for the "wrong" party). Hunting licenses? Cool (people with hunting licenses are more likely to vote for the "right" party).

Have you ever tried to buy beer with a school ID? There is a reason they aren't accepted as a government issue legal ID.

And don't get me started on the Romans.

After the Romans captured Carthage they murdered 450,000 of its inhabitants.

This makes Caesar's Place in Las Vegas very culturally problematic.

barbacoa··on Why do people worry about deficits?
The 3rd option is that government is forced to keep interest rates near 0 forever, coupled with high inflation to keep debt levels in check. Onslaught of increasing wealth inequality continues into the future as the country declines into a Japan style economy of stagnation.
barbacoa··on Tesla’s Texas Move Is Latest Sign of California Losing Tech Grip
NIMBYism is more a factor of incentives. Because of prop 13 California gets a large portion of state revenue from income tax, Texas has no income tax and relies on their very high property tax. Texas government has a strong incentive to promote development because that increases their tax base. Compared to California, construction permitting is a rubber stamping process in Texas. Houston, the 5th largest city in the USA, doesn't even have zoning laws.
barbacoa··on Facebook Whistleblower Leaks Thousands of Pages of Incriminating Internal Docs
The issue with the NYT is not around factual reporting but that they are shifting away from fact based reporting to opinions that are being presented as facts.

I read an article about a voting bill that had passed in some Republican state. The whole article was about how this is voter suppression, how Republicans don't like minorities, what politicians on Twitter had to say. In the whole article there was only ONE brief sentence that mentioned what was IN the bill.

barbacoa··on John Stossel sues Facebook for allegedly defaming him with fact-check
Anecdote warning:

My experience living in a city with a non-trivial homeless population is most homeless -- at least the visible ones -- are predominantly able-body young men (and increasing women too) in their 20-30s. We're not talking factory workers who got laid off after 15 years due to outsourcing. They strike me more like urban, drug addled version of Chris McCandless from 'into the wild'.

Of course this experience may not reflect other regions.

barbacoa··on Big Brothers Has Privatized
Progress may not be as slow as you think. Proliferation of body cameras on officers has done a lot to prevent bad behavior. Cops can't plant drugs/gun on someone, or lie about the facts of what happened very easily anymore. It also protects good cops from false allegations.
barbacoa··on Melatonin: Much More Than You Wanted to Know (2018)
I used to work 7pm - 7am night shift. 3 days on, 4 days off one week and 4 days on, 3 days off the next. With lots of melatonin, exercise and careful adherence to my bizarre schedule I was able to train my body into a diurnal inversion cyclical sleep schedule. As soon as my 3/4 day work week was over I would -- over the course of one day -- inverter myself back to being awake during the day. When my weekend was over I would invert back to sleeping during the day. I did this for years.

Work day 1: wake up 12pm, sleep 7am

Work day 2: same

Work day 3: same

Day off 1: wake up 12 pm, sleep at 10pm

Day off 2: wake up 8am, sleep 10pm

Day off 3: wake up 8 am, sleep 1am

Day off 4: wake up 12pm, sleep 3am

Repeat.

Melatonin was literally the only way I managed that.

barbacoa··on Climate activist arrested after ProtonMail provided his IP address
Most people accept search warrants signed by a judge for a crime. Proton mail was even nice enough to notify the user what they were the subject of a search.

With Gmail/Hotmail/etc your communication are at the finger tips of governments for non-criminal domestic surveillance. For example it has been alleged that the NSA leaked private emails of a journalist in order to score political damage.

barbacoa··on GoDaddy gives Texas abortion website notice: Find new host ASAP
You may cheer this on because it aligns with you politics but you are being very short sighted as to how this will all turn out. Chemical weapons always sound like a good idea until the wind changes. In 2001 Republicans cheered on the Patriot act because they thought it would only be used against their enemies. 15 years later those same surveillance laws were used to spy on and undermine the Republican presidential candidate.

Are you really certain your interests will always align with those of mega corporations?

barbacoa··on Partisan attachment: How politics is changing dating and relationships (2020)
One of the motivation behind NIMBY is to maintain high property values and most of all keep out multi family housing in order to price out the lower classes. This results in huge differences in k-12 educational quality and thus opportunity, due to school zoning.
barbacoa··on FB messenger silently censoring links, claims they were sent
In the greater scheme biden's corruption isn't really noteworthy. Everyone in DC has their loser kid on corporate boards, or are running a phony charity, or taking in speaking fees from those they are regulating, or taking campaign contributions in exchange for political favors.

The alarming part of the laptop story was the rapid response big tech took to censor it.

barbacoa··on FB messenger silently censoring links, claims they were sent
After big tech stepped in to ban news articles on Biden selling political influence to foreign nationals most people stopped even considering these kind of things conspiracy.

But to OP's point on joebiden.info:

barbacoa··on How the Taliban Overran the Afghan Army, Built by the U.S. over 20 Years
> it also employs thousands of civilians directly or indirectly

You're off by an order of magnitude, the MIC employs MILLIONS of people directly and indirectly. Each of the government agencies that make up the security state are as large as some of the largest private company. DOD has 700,000 civilian employees alone.

barbacoa··on Major Tea Party Group Was Backed by Billionaire Donors, Hacked Documents Reveal
I used to work with someone who was part of a "local grassroots" chapter of a political party. Every few weeks they would all be loaded onto a bus and sent to wherever they were told to go protest whatever issue the national news was obsessing over that moment. This was during weekdays and they were being paid for taking unpaid time off work.

I have always been curious what nefarious billionaire was funding it.

barbacoa··on Daniel Hale Receives 45-Month Sentence for Releasing Drone Documents
People forget that for two+ years the intelligence community had the media reporting on some Q-annon level conspiracy that the president was colluding with the Russian government. If you recall most every story at the time was based on "unnamed sources", who do you think those sources were?
barbacoa··on Daniel Hale Receives 45-Month Sentence for Releasing Drone Documents
If you gauge public perception by what the media says then that may be true.

Watching the intelligence community go full nuclear to undermine and destroy a democratically elected interloper president in coordination with the media is something that can't be unseen to many Americans.

It is becoming a less controversial view that an inappropriate amount of power is consolidated in the permanent unelected government employees.

barbacoa··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
Having gone to high school in California, we never covered Mexican-american or Spanish-american wars, civil war focused almost exclusively on slavery. 90% of WW2 was about Japanese internment or how racist nuking Japan was. History of Communism was never mentioned for obvious reasons.
