barbacoa··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
What's is the concern about VPNs being "suspect" or "reliable"? I hear this a lot about VPN providers but not sure why. If the VPN is logging your activity/IP you'd have to be doing something super illegal for the police to want to get a search warrant for your data.

>That must be it then, I wasn't aware. Thanks for correcting me.

You weren't wrong. Try to get RT to show up without specifying "RT"/"Russia today"/etc. I can search RT article titles with quotes but the original RT link will be on the second page if at all.

Now repeat this experiment with the NYTimes and compare the outcome.

DDG may not delist RT but you would not be a fool to suspect DDG throttles the visibility.

@yegg

Would also be very curious to hear an answer to this. Its been long rumored that Google has weights or boost/throttle values that are manually assigned to websites by humans which impact ranking. Would be great to understand if DDG is following in Google's footsteps.

barbacoa··on Tech groups ask Justice Alito to stay Texas social media law
From the bill:

"Censor" means any action taken to edit, alter, block, ban, delete, remove, deplatform, demonetize, de-boost, regulate, restrict, inhibit the publication or reproduction of, or deny equal access or visibility to expression, to suspend a right to post, remove, or post an addendum to any content or material posted by a user, or to otherwise discriminate against expression. The term includes an action taken to inhibit a social media platform or interactive computer service user's ability to be viewed by or interact with another user of the platform or service.

barbacoa··on Tech groups ask Justice Alito to stay Texas social media law
Having been apparently been the only person on HN to even take a cursory view of the bill text, basically the bill forbids "censoring" people based on political views. That leaves open if people are being censored because political views or behavior. It's very hard to prove that distinction, just like it's very hard to prove that a company is discriminating for/again a certain group when it comes to hiring or pay. And lawsuits over such discrimination allegations usually don't go anywhere.

The other part of the bill that I suspect companies are more worried about is that they have to published details about their moderate policies and statistics on how they are applied. No more bans with vague reasons like "harmful content".

barbacoa··on Texas law allowing users to sue social networks for censorship is now in effect
It's not that this certain someone is anti-capitalist. Establishment big business class has tentacles of influence that extends into the establishment politician class. Making enemies of establishment politicians made him the enemy of big business.
barbacoa··on Texas law allowing users to sue social networks for censorship is now in effect
The most obvious example is that time free speech was used to elect a certain someone who was politically hated by the big tech capitalist class.
barbacoa··on Data-Driven Deportation in the 21st Century
The 2019 numbers were 90% per the DHS.

barbacoa··on Data-Driven Deportation in the 21st Century
>>Do the agents let anyone in or what is your believe that is happening?

What happens is,

Immigrants will come to the border and claim asylum then once they're in the country skip the asylum court hearing. The judge issues a deportation order but by then there is no way to find them.

barbacoa··on Data-Driven Deportation in the 21st Century
Those are 2019 numbers. There has been a massive upsurge in illegal crossing starting in 2020. Many have attributed that surge to the Biden administration new catch and release policy. People who are caught at the border now are bussed to the closest major city and told to go to immigration court hearing -- which most just skip.

barbacoa··on Texas’ Unconstitutional Social Media Law Allowed to Proceed
For those who don't get the reference. #1 is referring to the Citizens United SCOTUS ruling.
barbacoa··on Texas’ Unconstitutional Social Media Law Allowed to Proceed
This argument has become so tiresome.

Speech laws become very blurry when it comes to corporations. I'd get in trouble with regulators if I went around saying the herbal supplements I sell cures cancer. Government forces companies to published compelled speech when it comes to food labeling or alcohol/cigarette warnings.

Where does the line exist? I don't know and I'd love to see a court rule on this.

barbacoa··on How rare is a Supreme Court breach? Very rare
This is the most underrated comment here.

Courts are not supposed to legislate from the bench. Roe v Wade was clearly inappropriate ruling from day one. It undermined the integrity of the supreme court.

Abortion should be ingrained as legal via state/federal law.

barbacoa··on twitter/the-algorithm
I'm a firm believer in the horseshoe theory.

If you listen to the intolerant wing of the right, the parts that would legitimately support overturning elections and arresting political opponents, they sound eerily similar to your sentiment.

barbacoa··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
YouTube artificially promotes CNN content. I suspect their content on YouTube would have similar number of views to CNN+ otherwise.
barbacoa··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
I had to connect a work Macbook to Ethernet. It didn't have a port so I bought a no-name brand USB-to-RJ45 adapter off Amazon. Come to find macOS doesn't have driver support for the adapter even though Windows and Linux are both plug and play. And I wasn't willing to do some backdoor process to install drivers on a work laptop. I had to buy a Apple branded adapter, which was 2x the price and only USB 2 vs the other one being USB 3.

Washington Post literally had an article today titled:

"It’s time to give the elites a bigger say in choosing the president"

barbacoa··on Twitter takeover battle: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey turn up pressure on board
This comment rings very true. The internet broke the business model that much of traditional media relied upon. Newspapers used to work hard to build trust and reputation in order to sell subscriptions, now they are bought up by billionaires to use a tools in driving political narratives (for example Bezos and Washington Post). I suspect Musk has a similar plan for Twitter. Which in this case Musk believes letting the unwashed masses speak freely benefits him.

barbacoa··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
I wouldn't go so far as saying it's blackmail, but when you read in the paper "official familiar with the matter say", it really should read "CIA/NSA asked us to tell you". It's hard to bite the hand that feeds you.
barbacoa··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
>>Russia is opposed to Western elites, and is therefore a positive force

Ukraine is corrupt and the USA doesn't care about civilians and is acting to turn Ukraine into Russia's next Afghanistan.

It is a jump to go from there to saying Russia is good.

barbacoa··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
Correct.

Without American oil imports, Japan was forced to seize Dutch oil production in Indonesia to keep their economy running. That would drag the USA into the war, therefore it was a logical conclusion to strike the USA first.

It's not hard to see Russia's action as a logical action to protect their interests. That however is not the same as condoning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

barbacoa··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor was spurred by America oil embargo on Japan, and 9/11 was spurred by American meddling in the middle east. None of those statements should be necessarily seen as minimizing or justifying those subsequent acts. There is nuance in the world, nothing happens in a vacuum.
barbacoa··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
>>far right or far left media, which tends to be much more pro-Russia than mainstream media

I wouldn't say pro Russian but anti-war. This kind of framing reminds me of GW Bush's "you're either with us or with the terrorists" accusation against people who opposed invading Iraq.

Also "far right or far left media" would be more accurately characterized as non-corporate non-MSM journalism. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, the MSM literally promotes every US war and foreign intervention no matter the cost or predictable disastrous consequences. It's as if they have become engulfed in the military industrial complex.

barbacoa··on Google Search results are below the fold
I've been trying brave as of recent. It feels like browsing the internet of the 90s; back when you search engines returned small no-name websites and blogs. Google gives me the same list of 50 or so "preferred" websites full of click bait run by media companies no matter what I search.
barbacoa··on Linux has bad battery duration compared to Windows. What can I do?
Best solution I have seen is to buy a Chromebook and install galliumOS. Still has most of the same issues as any desktop Linux but at least has all the power saving features of chromeos are included. That way you don't have to buy a device from a company that decides to throttle the CPU when they want you to buy a new computer.
barbacoa··on Apple M1 Ultra Meanings and Consequences
>When will we hit a wall and where will gains in performance come from then?

nm notation used to mean the width of the smallest feature that could be made. Even today there are processes such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) that allows singular atom thick features. The difference between nodes now are in shrinking macro features, you don't necessarily make them smaller, more important is density. This is currently done with 3d transistors (finfet) and perhaps in the future going full vertical. When all other optimization have been exhausted it's likely to see multiple layers of stacked transistors simulator to what they are doing with NAND memory chips. Eventually even that will hit a wall due to thermal limitations. Beyond that people have proposed using carbonnano tube transistors. That tech is very early but has been proved to function in labs. If we ever figure out how to manufacture carbon nanotubes chips, it will be truly revolutionary; you could expect at least another 50 years of semiconductor innovation.
